gunzip it again,
then tar -xf it .........

I just tried unpacking the mcs archive:
$ tar zxvf mcs-1.0.1.tar.gz tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I'm getting the same error for the mono tarball. (This is on RH8.)
