I dont think you can find that size, and if you want to hang oversized
linenbacked posters the best way may be get a long linen overlap on the
borders that could be wrapped around a stretcher like an artist would for
a canvas painting. the tension will also help prevent that wavy, sagging
that happens when you just pin them up (depending on the atmosphere the
piece gets more or less wavy)

Tom,

Not sure anyone but the CIA can get a single sheet of Plexiglas that is
63 x 94. Good luck on that. I think you may have to settle for having an
expert carefully glue two large pieces of plexi together -- there would
still be a thin seam and it would be somewhat delicate, but that probably
could be done with some of the super-glues they have these days. And yeah,
buckling would definitely be a problem. Back-bracing the frame would help
some, but I can't think of anything you could do to keep the plexi (and
the poster/linen behind it) from sagging forward in the middle. Plexi that
you can see through clearly just isn't that thick or rigid.

Here's a thought: A two-layer glazing system. First you have the foam
board that is glued or screwed to the back support of the frame. You place
the poster on top of the foamboard. Then you place a very thin layer of
non-stick, UV Plexiglas on top of the poster. Finally, you slap a sheet of
glass on top of the plexi. The glass gives you the rigidity to keep the
rest from buckling or sagging. It would be an incredibly heavy mother, and
need to be secured to the wall very well so that there was never a chance
of it falling. As for the bugaboo of the glass breaking and tearing the
poster -- the sheet of plexi between the poster and the glass should
prevent that.

Man, that would be one expensive frame... probably cost more that the
value of the poster.

Subject: [MOPO] Large French Grandes LB Buckeling?

Finally after four years of going to numerous frame shops here in lower
Michigan I have finally found a framer. This framer will actually frame my
eight French 47 x 63 one panels. Total will be about five thousand. This
has been a major nightmare for me for four solid years. I could find no
one that wanted or was willing to tackle this project.

Anyway for my friend Phil Edward's I got my one panel (Soubie) from The
Time Machine 1960 back yesterday. It's finally framed and done (after
four years). I bought it from you in 2000 or 2001. It's spectacular Phil.
Thank you for selling it to me. I am ecstatic about it!!!

I also picked up my one panel from Viva Las Vegas from 1964 also
(Soubie) and it look's great but these posters do buckle a bit. I noticed
this at the frame shop. Since they are all linenbacked I think one must
have to live with this. I do NOT want dry mounting. Even reversible dry
mounting if there is such a thing.

The posters are in Neilsen Frames and have spring clips, plexiglass,
archival mats and archival acid free foam core. I do notice the poster
change with room temperature. I think this pretty much goes along with
larger posters. Any thoughts from professional framers, collector's with
the same problem?

I have six more one panels on linen to go. Then in the next few years I
will have my linenbacked two panel (63 x 94) from Thunderball framed.
They are willing to tackle it. Plex might be a problem but it will be done
if it's the last thing I do. This poster is the crown jewel of my 007
collection and Thunderball collection. Hello to my friend Thomas Nixdorf
if you are reading this. I know they really liked your copy at the museum
in Germany during the 007 display you had there. Really like the 1965
Australian daybill from you!!!

Six more one panels and the two panel to go. I have been eyeing the 63 x
94 two panel by Landi for Circus World (1964). Will have that one panel
grande done by Masci.

Buckling is a problem but it comes and goes. I would guess the two panels
would really sag. Also would need a wooden frame for support in the back.

Thought's anyone on buckling of other larger one panels, three sheets, etc
on linen.

Thanks! Tom

P.S. I am beginning to wonder if this is normal? What do you think? The
frame shop was concerned we would not pay. I would never leave my posters
anywhere. They are like my children!!! :) I guess they have not met up
with my type before. Either very unique or very odd. The jury is still
out!!! :)

[MOPO] MOPO: Large Frames

2005-08-26 Thread Larry Wheeler

Hi All,

I have several oversized LB posters hanging in Nielson Frames with 1/8
inch UV acrylic. I use Stainless wire and very small turnbuckles on the
back corners of the frame that take the load off the corner clamping
system used with Nielson frames. This has worked very well for many
years.. The acrylic will sag in the center because of the weight but
this actually helps keep the poster against the rear AF backboard and
helps eliminate the poster from sagging. I have never had a problem
with quality UV acrylic sticking to the artwork when I wanted to change
out posters in the frames.
Just my 2 cents...

Re: [MOPO] linen buckling

2005-08-26 Thread Susan Heim

Hello Everyone,
Paper and fabric are susceptible to humidity
changes. Posters expand and contract in the frame and, for the most part, that
is what causes buckling. People ask me all the time if they linenback a poster
will that stop buckling from occuring. No, it does not as is evidenced by many a
collector that has linenbacked posters framed. When I do the framing of a
linenbacked poster, I do reinforce the system to alleviate part of that problem.
Once of the other ways to help it is to hang your frames with two nails or hooks
about 3 inches in from each side of the frame. A good frame has been overbuilt
by at least 1/8" to allow for expansion of the poster. When you hang with one
hook, it has more of a tendency to pull the side legs in a bit and take up that
allowance. Then the side of your poster is up against the wall of the frame and
when it expands it has nowhere to go but to buckle in the middle. Larger posters
that are linenbacked, if not tacked in properly in the frame, can also sag a bit
due to gravity and that also causes buckling. Unfortunately, part of it is just
the nature of the beast. Paper is very rarely flat just in it's own nature. When
you mount it on fabric with water involved, you sometimes get a bit of a
quilting effect and I have many linenbacked posters shipped to me for framing
and they rarely lay perfectly flat. Often it takes a while in the new
environment of the frame for them to flatten out at all. So, hope the info
helps. Take care all.

Hey all. I have over 400 framed items on my walls, many on
linen. I find that they do get wavy from time to time and even in a control
climate area. It's a real pain in the arse but I do talk them and re
roll them periodically. Sometimes this helps and sometimes not. It not only
occurs with lg. French's but also with the 3 sheets and also on the half
sheets (I thinklinened1/2 sheets and insertsis
ano-no). Over the years I have tried to stay away from linenbacking. I
thought it was great in the beginning, but my tastes have changed, i'd rather
a poster in its original state if possible. best drV

Re: [MOPO] EBAY SCAM CONTINUES Fwd: eBay International Second Chance Offer Invoice for Item:7537670429

2005-08-26 Thread Randall Petersen
The Second Chance Offer scam isn't new. I've been getting these for at
least a year now. Best advice: Never click on any link in one of these
emails. To find out if the offer actually may be legit, go directly to
the ebay auction in question, and ask the seller about it through the ebay
message system.

Keep in mind though that, even if a second chance offer is 'legit', it may
still be a scam, in which the high bidder was a shill for the seller,
thereby unmasking your maximum bid and giving the seller a 'second chance'
to take you to the cleaners with a second chance offer.

By the way, nice to see you over at NSFGE, a forum where collectors are
free to say what on their minds, without fear of aggressive censorship by
overzealous forum administrators. (http://p097.ezboard.com/bstylec)

[MOPO] RECOMMENDED: GRIZZLY MAN

2005-08-26 Thread Kirby McDaniel

And DON'T take your children.

Last night I saw GRIZZLY MAN, the Werner Herzog film about Timothy
Treadwell,
the self-styled naturist and bear confidante. I'm not going to tell
you anything
about the film. Go to the reviews if you want that.

This is simply an amazing film. It's an experience really, and it
sticks with you.

Devotees of Herzog's films will know that this film takes it place
with Herzog's
great jungle classics. But even if you don't know anything about

I think, that this film will surprise you. It's a devastating film,
so be warned: this
is the stuff that's scary -- the internal stuff.

[MOPO] latest eBay scams are not new

2005-08-26 Thread JR

Y'all,

Both of the recently-reported scams on Ebay -- the bogus "Congratulations,
you've won, and here's how to complete the transaction..." message and the bogus
"second chance offer" message have been going on for years. I have received
several during that time. They are just getting more sophisticated and official
looking is all.

About 18 months ago I was bidding on a genuine one-of-a-kind piece of
original artwork in a hotly-contested auction. Near the end of the bidding
I received a very sincere-sounding offer from someone who told me they had one
they could sell me for less than the current bid -- but I was bidding on
something of which there was only one in existence!

This is only valid reason I see for the big auctioneers like Bruce and
Heritage taking their auctions "Private" -- so no one can see the other bidders
and send them these kind ofscam messages.

Along with email virus attachments and all the clever variations on
"official-looking" emails phishing for your user name and password, the bottom
line everyone must start adopting towards messages that askyou to "do
something" is this:

Always proceed very cautiously with any message you receive asking you to
do something. Even if it turns out to be genuine, it's better to take it slow
and double check before clicking on any links or sending any money.

Trust no one -- not even the people or sites you know you cantrust --
because the message might not really be from them.

Re: [MOPO] linen buckling

2005-08-26 Thread JR

Michael,

I pretty much agree. I will only linenback a poster if it has
become so fragile that it is real danger of falling apart if not stabilized. If
it has defects that can be corrected by a talented restoration artist without
backing, I might havesome of that doneif what's required is not too
extensive. But tears and missing pieces of papertend to be minimized when
you put a poster in a frame with a white backing anyway. If there's really a
huge amount of missing paper, so much that it really doesn't display well
without paper-replacement, then I would tend to pass on buyingthe
posterin the first place (unless it was totally rare and I just *had* to
have it. Not many posters fall into that category for me).

Realistically, the reason most dealers push linenbacking (and
restoration, whether fully-disclosed or not) as being an enhancement is simple:
Profits. If you're a dealer and can buy a highly desirable title inpretty
bad shape for super-cheap and then pay a high-end professional backers and
restorers a good chunk of money to restore it to "like mint" for you, you can
then sell it for a premium and make some very nice profits. This is considered a
perfectly moral, ethically-sound and acceptable way of doing business in the
world of most collectibles. I don't agree, but that's the way of the
world.

So don't expect to see dealers claiming linenbacking is
anything less than the greatest thing since the stone litho, because it ain't
gonna happen.

It's up toeach individual collectorto educate
themselves on stuff like this and make their own value judgments as to what
works for them. Hey, at least in poster-collecting you can see if something has
been backed (and maybe some of the restoration work). For some
collectibles, like toys and furniture, a really good restorer can fix something
up and even a professional appraiser would likelynot be able to tell it
has been restored.

  the old linen debate.

i have always preferred unbacked. but, when you want something
  rareyou buy what comes along.

so what's wrong with seeing the defects. i just framed an excellent
condition 1935 unbacked one sheet. it had 2/3 clean tears in the
border, i didn't even tape them.

some sellers and dealers seem to think that linen is an
  enhancement. no!!

big sloppy rips and missing pieces are not cured with linen.
  linen merely camouflages.

and, if i dobuy linen pieces, i prefer posters that have NOT been
restored. why buy a painting? these are posters.

flaws add character. why would anyone except a 50 year old one
  sheet to be mint?

...and yes, a few of my expensive, linen posters are
  wavy!!!

I never listen to reviewers. Their taste in films might not be the same as
mine. They are just human with just human opinions.

Re: [MOPO] Just screened The Brothers Grimm

2005-08-26 Thread Andy Neal

Ok - This may be a bad time to send this, but here goes...(Kathy - Shut your
eyes and count to 10.Now)

Not a cult film by any means. Be Cool

I have just watched Be Cool with the wife

I really enjoyed it but it's far from a movie to rant and rave about. Some
really funny bits in it - The Rock deffo makes the film have that all funny
edge.

There is a nice shot of a Scarface Quad in it which I thought was cool.

There was also a scene with Travolta and Uma doing a very unique dance
routine, I wonder where I've seen that before lol

Harvey Keitel is as good as ever playing a great music pimp type character

Alltogether an above average entertaining film with some comedy spice mixed
in.

Worth watching but no oscar winner

Thanks
Andy

Andy,

Sounds like a movie for me to see I love movies. I guess that's why my
husband and I get along together so good (he's a manager at a multi-plex
theatre). LOL I enjoy almost any movie EXCEPT chick flicks and slasher
movies.
