Re: [MOPO] Titanic director: digital cinema will save biz

2006-04-25 Thread JR

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

What is this, the third or fourth time since the 1950's that 3Dhas
been touted as the magic bullet that is going to save thetheaters? When
will they learn that it is *really good movies*which
generateword-of-mouth, must-seeexcitement that is genuine and not
artificially stimulated by hundreds of millions of PR dollars that will bring
the audiences back to the theaters? Good films are the ticket, not gimmicks. I
mean, look at what they talking about putting out as the opening salvo in
this brave new 3D world --a bunch of frickin' re-releases! Right. That
will do the trick. The theater owners can breath a sigh of relief now...

I've always loved the idea of 3D, but they've never managed to get rid of
those stupid glasses and until they do, ferget aboud it.

Oh yeah, making the theater seats more comfortable andarranging
itso that the auditoriums don't smell and the sound from the film next
door doesn't blast through into your viewing environment would also help. And
cheaper prices for drinks and popcorn. And... did I mention it would also help
to offer good movies that are actually worth dealing with traffic, paying the
price of a DVD for two first tickets and sitting through a half-hour of
commercials before the film even starts?

On the other hand, I do agree that this idea of simultaneous release to
theater and DVD is imbecilic. That will just turn *everything* into a made for
TV movie. We're almost there now, as far as quality of content goes, but at
least they are still trying to pretend that first run movies are something
different than standard TV fare. With simultaneous release, there will no longer
even be the fading illusion of cachet attached to theater going.

well Folks.. in what seems like ions of time... The Oscar® i attempted
to sell on ebay has been sent back to the Academy of arts and sciences.

in beverly hills , Ca..

I thought you may find the story interesting to fill you in, after
the attorney from AMPAS asked me to not sell the awrd as it may be fake

or since it had no recipient plate we had no provenance, I said Ok ill
end sale and proped to mopo memebers the question what is the right
thing to do? well after the ebay sale numerous people offered me cash
to sell it to them.. One a Michigan senator told me how I could legally

sidestep the law and sell another item and hand him the Award...

And guess what... I would have loved the extra money as i could tasete
it. But then I asked My son what he thought and he said well you
always wanted to save your trademark rights so thats all the academy is
doing... made sense... yet i wanted that big payoff!

So then i became panic stricken,,, what if I tried to give it back and
they said they didnt get itso I hired a attorney.. and i said
I will

heed your advise and do whatever is deemed fair The academy had
offered me 2000.00 for the award that Rudy had appraised on Antiques

roadshow for 14,000.00 or morethe same month...

So... now i had atty costs.. what made this ordeal last so Long was the
Fact my attorneys Daughter was about to have a baby... and so

because of the wierd circunstances My atty was not availible for
several weeks..

so yesterday I met withthe attorney and received a check from academy
legal fees of 3000.00 from Academy afterlegal fees of 500.00

hats 2500.00 .. The academy used thier own fed ex acct and they even
supplied a Forn fitted foam carrier... at 1sst i thought well if it
doenst fit

its surely a imposter well guess what??? IT FIT LIKE A GLOVE!!!
all i could think was that Johnny Cochran statement except in my case
it did fit If it Fits you must aquit...

So it was like a priceless relic was returned home where it
belongs.. No cigar. But was interesteing to say that I once had
one of these

items.. Now... the question whether it was real or not may never be told
as Im sure they like to keep that info secret..whats also funny is

that everyone had the opportunity to buy him from me yet didnt Gos
to show that you never know where you will find Movie memprabilia..

So finallylast week my attys Daughter had the baby.. and so yesterday we
met and packed up Oscar at his officed and he shipped it back...

My attorney on this matter was Martin Holmes. Sr... he is actress
Katie Holmes Dad..( Katies from Toledo) ... So as you know its been a
wild month for him and the family... so I tried not to bother him
dureing that period... As we shook hands i said Martin I knew you
would understand better than anyone how crazy showbiz is... thanks! he
agreed.

and so... Thats what happened. with the Oscar® believe it or not..

Now i have many more items that are also loaded with historic Hollywood
.. many paper items and also a few early cinima pieces like a Mole
richarson 2 K fresnel studio light from MGM circa 30s -40s on a stand
1000.00 plus shipping its heavy, rusty But cool and original..
could have been used on any ofthe MGM films from 30s -40s was bought
when Sony puchased the backlot of MGM in 80s?

Ill have more items on ebay soon seller id- Dream factory

LAS VEGAS (Hollywood Reporter) - Titanic director James Cameron, warning
that Hollywood is in a fight for survival, wants the movie industry to
 offer
films in digital 3-D to counteract declining sales and rampant piracy.
Maybe we just need to fight back harder, come out blazing, not wither away
and die, Cameron said during his keynote address Sunday at the National
Association of Broadcasters' Digital Cinema Summit.
D-cinema can do it, for a number of reasons, but because d-cinema is an
enabling technology for 3-D. Digital 3-D is a revolutionary form of
 showmanship
that is within our grasp. It can get people off their butts and away from
their portable devices and get people back in the theaters where they
 belong.
Cameron also took the occasion of the world's largest annual film and
broadcast technology trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center to fire a
 few
shots across the bow of the controversial practice of simultaneous movie and
video releasing being promoted by entrepreneur Mark Cuban and Bubble
 director
 Steven Soderbergh, among others.
We're so scared of piracy right now that we're ready to pimp out our
mothers, Cameron said. This whole day-and-date DVD release nonsense? Here's
 an
answer: (Digital cinema is) one of the strongest reasons I've been pushing
 3-D
for the past few years because it offers a powerful experience which you can
only have in the movie theater.
The director of the highest-grossing film of all time in nominal terms at
$1.8 billion worldwide said he is considering a rerelease of 1997's Titanic
 in
digital 3-D just as Peter Jackson is planning at some point for King Kong

 anniversary next year.
With filmmakers and exhibitors united behind the idea of enhanced cinema
experiences, Cameron predicted that studios would become even more focused on

both releasing new titles and rereleasing classics in 3-D digital cinema.
We will reach a point in a few years when every major studio will ask how
many of its four or five annual tentpoles should be in 3-D, Cameron said.
 It
will become almost a rule that all major 3-D animated releases will be made
 available in 3-D.
Every year there will be a copy of timeless favorites brought back through
(3-D) dimensionalization, he said. The new wave of 3-D films will be the
must-see films, the major releases from major filmmakers.
Cameron said that despite industrywide squabbling and fear-based
decision-making associated with new technology, and even despite the fact
 that
 the major
studios haven't cooperated in the past, the digital cinema rollout actually
 is happening.
We're halfway through the looking glass, he said. We're past the point
where the fear of change is outweighed by the fear of not changing.
While most people associate 3-D with either animation or projection, Cameron
said that there are a variety of stereographic processes that can be
introduced while shooting, during postproduction, or after a movie has been
 archived.
Among the films testing the various 3-D waters are Narnia producer Walden
Media and New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is
being shot live-action with stereographic cameras; Robert Zemeckis'
 Beowulf,
which is employing 3-D-animated performance capture; and Walt Disney Feature

Animation's computer-animated Meet the Robinsons, which will be projected
 in
  3-D.
The filmmaker said his interest in digital 3-D goes back to his love of
movies and his love of making them for the big screen. I'm not going to make

movies for people to watch on their cell phones. To me, I'd rather go back to

doing some more deep-ocean expeditions, Cameron said, referring to the
 handful
of maritime documentaries he has made since Titanic. I don't want that
grand, visionary, transporting movie experience made for the big screen to
become a thing of the past.

Re: [MOPO] o/t- OSCAR® has left the building! th e story can be told.

2006-04-25 Thread JR
Tom,

You paid an attorney $2000 bucks just to ship your own Oscar back to
the Academy? Man, that's easily the worst shipping-charge story I've
ever heard!

I still don't see how giving it back to Academy to stick away in a box
somewhere instead of selling it to a fan who would have treasured it
as you have is anything like doing the right thing, but what's done
is done. But listen, since you have the email address of the Academy's
attorney, will you please forward the following information to him
regarding fraudulent auction of the same Oscar over and over again
that keeps happening on eBay? The Academy should know about this (as
it is something that really is damaging the prestige of the Oscar) and
pressure eBay to stop it:

Besides the fact that this seller has auctioned the *same* Oscar three
separate times in the past two months, there's plenty of additional
weird stuff going on:

1) The first time the Oscar went for $3,500 with only two bidders. My
guess is both bids either shills or non-serious bidders. The winner
of this first auction, mame79, has left no feedback on the
transaction, although it's been almost 2 months. The seller has left
no feedback on mame79 either.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=7591982096

2) The second time it had 4 bidders, some with real feedback so maybe
not all shills, popping the final selling price to over $6,500. But,
again, the winner of this auction, imfuming18he, has left no
feedback on the transaction, although it's been 6 weeks. And again,
the seller has left no feed back on imfuming18he either.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=7594764769

3) Then we have this latest time around, where only two people bid
again, both of them with only (1) feedback, and the price is now
driven up to over $7,000. This auction ended Apr 15... but just two
days later, on Apr 17, the supposed winner is already leaving
negative feedback saying he never received the item? (and it was a
pretty mild comment, considering he had just been ripped off for over
$7,000).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=7609514585

Finally, the seller, allieOo, has only (23) feedbacks and ALL of them
were where from where he bought stuff from others. This appears to be
the first time he has acted as a seller.

that is within our grasp. It can get people off their butts and away from
their portable devices and get people back in the theaters where they belong.
Cameron also took the occasion of the world's largest annual film and
broadcast technology trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center to fire a few
shots across the bow of the controversial practice of simultaneous movie and
video releasing being promoted by entrepreneur Mark Cuban and Bubble director
Steven Soderbergh, among others.
We're so scared of piracy right now that we're ready to pimp out our
mothers, Cameron said. This whole day-and-date DVD release nonsense? Here's an
answer: (Digital cinema is) one of the strongest reasons I've been pushing 3-D
for the past few years because it offers a powerful experience which you can
only have in the movie theater.
The director of the highest-grossing film of all time in nominal terms at
$1.8 billion worldwide said he is considering a rerelease of 1997's Titanic in
digital 3-D just as Peter Jackson is planning at some point for King Kong
and, possibly, his The Lord of the Rings trilogy. George Lucas also plans
to rerelease his original Star Wars in 3-D timed to the space opera's 30th
anniversary next year.
Cameron said that despite industrywide squabbling and fear-based
decision-making associated with new technology, and even despite the fact that
the major
studios haven't cooperated in the past, the digital cinema rollout actually
is happening.
Media and New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is
being shot live-action with stereographic cameras; Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf,
which is employing 3-D-animated performance capture; and Walt Disney Feature
Animation's computer-animated Meet the Robinsons, which will be projected in
3-D.
The filmmaker said his interest in digital 3-D goes back to his love of
movies and his love of making them for the big screen. I'm not going to make
movies for people to watch on their cell phones. To me, I'd rather go back to
doing some more deep-ocean expeditions, Cameron said, referring to the handful
of maritime documentaries he has made since Titanic. I don't want that
grand, visionary, transporting movie experience made for the big screen to
become a thing of the past.

[MOPO] Digital 3-D isn't the only problem with the movie business

2006-04-25 Thread Eric Melanson
I second JR's comments...a good plot, solid acting, a reprieve from
ten's of remakesand maybe the movie business will come back.

While I do agree that digital 3-D might make a difference for the
movie-going public, something else a whole lot better will have to be
done about the movie going EXPERIENCE. At skyhigh prices, I want to do
more than step on filth in the dark to sit in a seat that is so worn out
that the concept of 2-3 hours sitting in it is unbearable. The average
movie theatre has all the visual and emotional appeal of a warehouse.

Until the deliverables to the consumer change, I would rather sit in
the comfort, safety and enjoyment of my home and watch movies on DVD.
Sure...the visual impact is much less attractive, but the environment is
a lot more amenable to what is supposed to be an entertainment
experience.

[MOPO] THE TEXAS THEATER

2006-04-25 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Efforts have been underway for some time to restore The Texas Theater
on Jefferson

Boulevard in Dallas, under the auspices of the Oak Cliff Foundation.

The Texas Theater is an old movie theater in the Oak Cliff section of
Dallas and
it has been around for a long time. It's being brought back to its
former heyday.

1.5 million dollars are still needed to complete the restoration.

If any of you care about old theaters and their restoration, here is
a famous
one. While the Texas is known as the theater where President
Kennedy's suspected
assassin was arrested, it history is varied. Donations are being
accepted.

[MOPO] COSTNER NAMED IN HOTEL SEX ACT CLAIM CASE Victoria Mitchell, Chief Reporter,

2006-04-25 Thread Kainbach

COSTNER NAMED IN HOTEL SEX ACT CLAIM
  CASE

Victoria Mitchell, Chief Reporter, Scottish Press
  Association

Hollywood star Kevin Costner was today revealed as the celebrity
accused of performing a sex act while being given a massage at a famous
  golf hotel.
The A-list actor was accused of the incident at the spa at The Old
Course Hotel in St Andrews, Fife, in October 2004.
A legal ruling had banned identifying Costner, who had been in St
Andrews with his wife, where they attended the Dunhill Links pro-celebrity
  golf event.
The 34-year-old spa worker at the centre of the allegations
initially claimed unfair dismissal and sexual discrimination against the
hotel after she lost her job.
She claimed that she was unfairly dismissed after she made the
complaint to management about the 51-year-old star, whose best-known films
include Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Bodyguard.
However just before a tribunal hearing this morning, the woman, who
cannot be named for legal reasons, settled with hotel lawyers.
And this afternoon tribunal chairman Nicol Hosie ruled that both
the hotel and Costner could be identified and that there was not a strong
enough case for their names to be withheld.
The woman made no comment as she left the tribunal, which was in
  Dundee.
