Re: [MOPO] 3-sheet REPRO for Casablanca?

2006-06-04 Thread JR

All righty, then... somehow I missed the earlier discussions on these S2
full-size 3-sheet reproductions... and I'll admit they are pretty cool, but,
c'mon... $1,350 smackers for a reproduction? Nah... it can't possibly cost them
more than $200 bucks torun offone these things... evenprinting
them one-off on demand. So, at 100 percent... maybe even 200 percent profit...
thatwould place the retail priceat something like $400 to $600 at
the most. No way I would pay $1,350 dollars for one. Think of the truly great
*original* posters you can get for that kind of money...

  Strange that
Moviegoods would use the insert image instead of the 3-sheet to advertise
  this,

  It is no different
than the King Kong and Metropolis 3-sheet repros by S2 that weve discussed
  here forever.

  In fact Moviegoods
  also sells the Metropolis: http://www.moviegoods.com/movie_product.asp?sku=140257master%5Fmovie%5Fid=10337

  Y'all,

I just stumbled across this... it seems to be the
first case (that I know of) of a full-size reproduction of 3-sheet (and they
want $1,350 for it?). I have always thought that there were no repros of

[MOPO] Interesting Article In NY TIMES About Ebay

2006-06-04 Thread Flixspix

How eBay Makes Regulations Disappear

By KATIE HAFNER
Published: June 4, 2006

IN quick succession one morning last month, Louisiana state legislators
plowed through a long list of bills, including one to relocate the motor vehicle
commission, another to regulate potentially abusive lending practices, and yet
another that was the handiwork of eBay, the digital shopping mall that bills itself as
"the world's online marketplace."

Cheryl Brown, who is authorized to sell other people's items
on eBay, said she was "blown away" when Louisiana forced her to get a license.

Sherrie Wilks and Jim Steele of the Louisiana Auctioneer
Licensing Board felt the backlash from their license enforcement efforts.

EBay had worked overtime to ensure the passage of Senate Bill 642, which
sought to exempt some Internet transactions — like those that occur on its Web
site — from Louisiana licensing requirements for businesses conducting auctions.
As the State Senate's Commerce Committee convened to consider the bill, Duane
Cowart, an eBay lobbyist, testified that forcing eBay "trading assistants" to
fork over $300 for a license was unduly burdensome.
"What they do on the Internet is not an auction, and they are not
auctioneers," Mr. Cowart told the committee. Trading assistants take items on
consignment from other owners and put them up for bid on eBay, but Mr. Cowart
said their activities were more akin to placing classified ads. Louisiana's
senators seemed to agree with him wholeheartedly. "I think eBay is great," said
one, while another regaled the room about his adventures shopping for a Plymouth
Prowler on eBay. State Senator Noble E. Ellington, a Democrat who sponsored the
bill at Mr. Cowart's behest, beamed as his colleagues gave the legislation their
unanimous support.
EBay's lobbying activities are not confined to Louisiana. As the company has
spread its innovative and influential wings across the Internet, it has also
woven together a muscular and wily lobbying apparatus that spans 25 states. "It
is a fast-moving train, and if you get in front of it you'll get flattened,"
said Sherrie Wilks, an official with Louisiana's licensing agency, who is
concerned that eBay flouts regulatory oversight by persuading state legislators
to take the company's side.
Regulators in other states also say that when they try to erect guidelines
around eBay's activities, they quickly encounter the realities of the company's
political power, raising anew the perennial questions about the proper balance
among public policy, consumer protection and business interests. EBay's lobbying
tactics, meanwhile, illustrate the spoils to be won when a savvy, resourceful
company combines local political persuasion and grass-roots rallying to get
lucrative regulatory exemptions that allow it to safeguard its profits.
EBay's efforts have been remarkably successful, and the company, which has
worked tirelessly to cultivate its image as a friendly neighborhood bazaar even
as it engages in hard-nosed lobbying, is not shy about boasting of its
victories. Last year, Ohio passed a law that would have regulated eBay sellers,
but the company moved quickly — with the help of seasoned lobbyists — to have a
pre-emptive and more favorable bill passed.
"We realized what was there, and we worked with local lobbyists and were able
to get the law reversed," said Tod Cohen, eBay's vice president for government
relations. He oversees the company's efforts to convince state lawmakers of a
core eBay belief: that state regulation can impede the flow of e-commerce.
The Federal Trade Commission, which has loosened regulations across a broad
range of industries, appears to agree. Late last week, responding to a request
from Mr. Ellington for an analysis of the Louisiana bill, the agency advised
that the bill promoted competition and increased consumer choice.
Unlike many other Internet companies, eBay has to be especially fleet-footed
when it comes to stopping what it perceives as hostile regulation, whether it
involves the growing number of eBay drop-off stores — places like UPS stores and
small shops where people take their goods to be sold on eBay — or the more
general category of trading assistants. Anyone engaged in selling on the site
depends on a relatively friction-free environment in order to make a profit. So
does eBay, because its overall corporate goal is to keep sales volumes high.

At any given moment, 89 million items are for sale on eBay, and the mother
ship — eBay itself — gets a fee for each successful transaction. It also charges
its 193 million registered users listing fees for any products they display on
the site. EBay's gross transaction fees for the first quarter of 2006 alone were
more than $500 million, a 30 percent increase over the same quarter in 2005.
Keeping regulators at bay, particularly those whose efforts might slow down
sales traffic, is a particularly high

[MOPO] FA: 1,057 lobby card lots single horror/sci cards close 6/6 on eBay

2006-06-04 Thread Bruce Hershenson
I want to make sure all MoPo members are aware of the 1,057 lobby card lots
(mostly from 2-14 cards per lot, PLUS a really interesting collection of 55
single horror/sci-fi/detective lobbies, plus a set of Breakfast at
Tiffany's cards sold singly!) that I have on eBay closing Tuesday night
(6/6). What is included in this weeks items?
First more on that collection of 55 single horror/sci-fi/detective
lobbies. These were all collected by one collector over many years. He
wanted to get one card each from ALL the top Universal titles, but he
realized he could not afford top scenes from the early classics, so he
instead tried to either get a lesser original card (lesser in terms of
the scene depicted) or a Realart re-release card. But he made the VERY
wise move of finding the very best condition cards he could, and (because
he had a background in comic books, where both the condition of an item and
whether it has had restoration has a HUGE influence on its price) he almost
exclusively sought out lobby cards that had had no restoration whatsoever!
I have carefully noted the exact condition of each of these 55
cards, and written in words whatever condition defects each had (on some, I
had to look very hard to find anything at all wrong because the condition
was so nice!) and I also noted what, if any, restoration each card had had,
even noting if there was any tape on the back of the card, put there
decades ago (some collectors view this as restoration and others don't).
Many of the cards have had NO restoration of any kind (front or
back) and many have that nice crisp feel that most collectors prize and
so rarely find, especially in horror/sci-fi lobbies (because most horror
lobby cards were handled a lot, either while being used at theater after
theater or while being handled by collectors in the days before they were
so highly prized). There are A FEW of the cards with condition defects, and
all those are clearly noted, and there are great super-sized unenhanced
images that show you exactly how the cards appear.
More and more comic book collectors and dealers have been moving
over to our hobby each month (many of the very best, like Robert Rogovin
and Stephen Fishler, have been here for many years!) and it seems that most
of them are drawn to high grade unrestored lobby cards from top
horror/sci-fi movies, likely because these items have so many similarities
to the comics they collect. The collection of 55 single horror/sci-fi
lobbies that ends Tuesday night is FILLED with high grade unrestored
lobby cards from horror/sci-fi movies, and any collector who has been
around for any length of time can tell you that these kinds of cards are
not often offered for sale or auction!
Just for fun, I listed the horror/sci-fi lobby cards in the order
of the movie's first release. Note that his collector had an interest in
the great detective lobby cards of the 1930s and 1940s, and so he had 8 of
those cards among his 55, and I listed those AFTER the horror/sci-fi lobby
cards (but I accidentally left the SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH in with the
horror/sci-fi ones). The 8 detective cards include one Mr. Moto, three
Sherlock Holmes, and four Charlie Chans!

After the special collection of 63 single horror/sci-fi/detective lobbies
comes a set of Breakfast at Tiffany's cards sold singly. Why did I break up
this set when all the other sets I am selling this week are left as sets?
Because this title is of such interest to so many collectors, and prices on
this title have reached the point where many collectors know they can never
afford an original poster, but they still very much can afford one of the
original cards. This is an unusual set in that there are NO dead cards, as
Hepburn is prominently in every scene, and of course, the #6 card has the
classic iconic image of Hepburn. Note that all of the cards were lightly
folded horizontally at one time (likely someone at a theater was holding
them in their hands and absentmindedly partially bent them across the
middle!), but the crease is very light on all the cards and I noted on each
how noticeable it is (plus our super-sized images show you how noticeable
it is on each card). If you can accept this relatively minor defect, you
may well get one of these classic lobby cards for your collection at a
price you are happy to pay, and that doesn't happen very often!
After the single lobby cards described above come nearly ONE
THOUSAND complete and incomplete lobby card sets (from 2-14 cards per set),
each from a single movie. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL MAJOR LOBBY CARD OFFERINGS IN
THE PAST, AND THIS IS SURELY ON A PAR WITH ANY OF THEM! You'll find cards
from every decade and genre, from early silents to the present day (and
lobby cards from the past 25 years are especially hard to find, and sure to
increase in value once collectors realize just how rare they are!). There
are
