Re: [MOPO] Music to the ears of the popCORN crowd

2006-08-18 Thread Ron Wisberg
I've just got to say, when if comes to filmmakers today.Kevin Smith - A total wash, not even a one hit wonder, more of a one hit blunder (he likes to claim he has two hits, but not really). Boring and more interested in himself than in making a good film. Clerks 2 is his best film to date (a summer film this year) but that being his best film is like saying The Unearthly was better than Beast of Yucca Flats.Quentin Tarantino- I'll fight for him stronger. Reservoir Dogs is a good film even if it is a rip-off, something he himself has pointed out interview after interview. Pulp, blah, Jackie Brown, good story but overall blah, but theKill Bills? Damned good stuff. Wes Anderson- Sorry, he's one of the best filmmakers of over 40 years. Bottlerocket? It was really a bore to me other than a showcase for Luke and Owen Wilson. Rushmore was a really amazing piece. Royal
Tenenbaums even more so. It's like it dares people to watch it once, or even twice and dislike it. It's smarter than that. If you watch if three times and don't find the brilliance, well, you should seek help. Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou, this could be argued as his first simplefeel good, don't have to think about it to get it film, and while it lacks the depth of his earlier work, it is excellent. But there's still Darren Aronofsky and Richard Kelly and David O. Russell. To claim these modern pioneers don't understand the big picture of film, is only to admit your own shortcomings. Ron

that everyone is talking about their stupid movie, so they throw a
bunch more money at it.

But, then in the end, all you're left with is a (more expensive)
bad film with (a still unbelievably) stupid premise - a movie that
no one in your target audience has any respect for at all (and they
haven't even seen it yet). Do they really think a hundred million
people want to see a movie that is (probably) so bad it has become
a worldwide joke?

Of course, I haven't seen the film yet (perhaps it's brilliant),
but knowing the people involved, I'm not gonna be holding my

Not that they won't make some decent money with the film. As the
saying goes... No one ever went broke by underestimating the
intelligence of the viewing public.

[MOPO] Snakes Did Get Two Major Positive Reviews

2006-08-18 Thread Flixspix

Both the NY Times and SLATE magazine, two on line
rags I respect highly for certain things like movies and
reporting on the end of the civilized world as we know it,
both gave it rave reviews...Slate called it the best post 9/11 film
yet and the points drawn out of the film made for interesting
debate.

Re: [MOPO] There is some advance indication that Snakes. . .

2006-08-18 Thread JR
Just talking about something this obviously stupid is playing into the studio's
hands. The more people here about it, regardless of *what* they hear, there
will be some who will then have to see it just to see for themselves. Reviews
purchased in the major dailies don't count -- the biggies can be bought just
like any other rag, it just costs more. That's why I now rely entirely upon
opinions I see on lists like MOPO -- reviews from people I know and have some
respect for their sense of film history and critical ability. Of course, for
SNAKES, no review was necessary. The title and the trailer were enough to damn
it for me.

Scene in conference room where obscenely high-paid studio execs are earning
their bonuses planning marketing strategy:

OK, now, we've got this action pic almost in the can, but no name for it yet.
We need something that will really pull 'em in...

I missed the script conferences... what's this one about

Jesus, Fred. There was only one script conference needed for this one and you
still couldn't make it? It's about a bunch of snakes that run loose on a plane
and freak everybody out.

What? We greenlighted that concept? The pitch about snakes on a plane?

Yeah. Sure. Didn't cost that much... except for the PR side. But we need a
dramatic and catchy name for it.

It's just about snakes on a plane? That's it? Nothing else?

Yes, damnit!

Hmmm... do you suppose we could get away with just calling it Snakes on a
Plane?

Oh, c'mon, now you're just being... Hey...wait a sec... that could be gold.
It's... what do they call it? Descriptive?
