OK, Bruce, I accept that you have based the offer on information available to
you. I suppose I may be exhibiting an English-speaking bias here. Also, to me
movies are Hollywood ( a childhood memory) and so the posters which best
reflect that are US ones, although I am occasionally tempted by some of the
artwork on Polish posters, for example. To obtain quads for the older movies is
also generally a more expensive proposition. As a small-time online dealer
mainly of US one-sheets, however, I find all my clients are UK based.

Of course, there are many U.S. collectors who buy non-U.S. items and vice
versa, but we are talking overall.

Since we auction 2,000 to 3,000 items per week and we ship around 100 packages
each day, we certainly have a large enough sample size!

OK, here's the thing - Bruce is of the opinion that having special Sunday
auctions of non-US posters will be a benefit to European bidders. While I do
not wish to seem ungrateful, that suggests that if you are a non-US citizen
then you buy non -US posters. Does Bruce base that on empirical data or simply
geographical assumption? Although UK based I mainly collect US poster formats,
with the occasional Daybill or Quad. I would be very interested to hear from
other non-US bidders as to whether or not they agree with Bruce's view.

Re: [MOPO] Heritage Jazz Singer

2014-03-23 Thread David
What is interesting about The Jazz Singer Movie and the Long Daybill
movie poster is that the poster in fact is *NOT from 1927* which is when
the movie was released in the USA, in fact the movie had its first
(advanced) screening in Sydney at The Lyceum Theatre on Friday 28
December 1928, more than TWELVE MONTHS after the USA release.

For those who have got this information wrong, feel free to adjust your
databases.

When The Lyceum Theatre was announced as the first picture theatre to
show the movie it was planned for a Boxing Day release but the
preparations necessary to show the movie as intended (with sound!) made
the alteration of the date inevitable. The official opening (after the
pre-screening) was Saturday 29 December 1929 and the run at the Lyceum
was astounding, still attracting audiences in May of 1929 thus delaying
the release of The Terror (1928) another talkie. Now, this wasn't a
continuous run for The Jazz Singer and The Lyceum Theatre, the annual
(and pre-booked) Methodist Conference closed the screenings of the film
between Feb 26 1929 and March 1 1929.

Another side note is that the movie opened in Adelaide at the 'New
Pavillion Theatre' on 13 May 1929 AS A SILENT MOVIE...those of us in
Australia know that technology takes time to get through to (the state
of) South Australia, I believe colour TV was launched down there in the
last 2 years...

Re: [MOPO] Struzan and Peak

2014-03-23 Thread Craig Miller

I went to this exhibit last weekend. It's there through the end of
May and is free.

It's a very nice exhibit. About four dozen pieces, divided half and
half between Struzan and Peak. I think there are four "fine art"
pieces by each of them and the rest of the art is movie poster
material. A few concept pieces, a few "alternate" designs, and
the majority finished pieces as used in the final posters. No
text, of course; just the art. Definitely worth seeing if you're
able to get to it.

Craig.

Peak as well as a current exhibition in SoCal that some of you may

I was curious if anyone else is having trouble with the Gavel Snipe system
today. Yesterday, Gavel Snipe worked smoothly and placed various bids for

mysteriously erased, there is no trace of them in the system at all.

The Cards are original, and come from a Regional Film Archive in Mexico City.
They were designed in Hollywood and printed in Mexico.
Each Card contains the same design elements found on Posters from the US.
They contain both stills from the Film and also design elements from the One
Sheet Poster.

The typography, photos, artwork, stars names, credits, drawings, scenes,
emotional impact,
appeal, and intrinsic value are virtually the same as Posters from Hollywood or
any other
international Metropolis where the film had been shown.

However, the layout will be much flashier, more graphically intensive, or even
more lurid.
The size is appx. 13" x 17"---over 40% larger than a standard Lobby Card.
As such, each Poster is a cross between a Jumbo Lobby Card, Title Card, and a
One Sheet Poster.
The Posters were printed on either heavy Cardboard Stock, thick fine Linen
Paper, or
sturdy Poster Stock.

Overall very good condition, altho there will be occasional tears, pinholes,
stains, etc.
There are eight different variations for each poster---containing different
stills from the film.
Some dupes.

[MOPO] Fwd: [MOPO] European bidders and non-us posters

OK, Bruce, I accept that you have based the offer on information available
to you. I suppose I may be exhibiting an English-speaking bias here. Also,
to me movies are Hollywood ( a childhood memory) and so the posters which
best reflect that are US ones, although I am occasionally tempted by some
of the artwork on Polish posters, for example. To obtain quads for the
older movies is also generally a more expensive proposition. As a
small-time online dealer mainly of US one-sheets, however, I find all my
clients are UK based.

Re: [MOPO] European bidders and non-us posters

2014-03-23 Thread Bruce Hershenson
I agree. I think it is only natural for many collectors to buy the posters
from the country they live in/grew up in because in addition to buying the
poster, a collector is buying memories, and they remember the poster that
was outside the theater when they went, not a poster that was exhibited in
another country. Of course there is nothing wrong with going beyond this
thinking and getting the best posters regardless of country, but my
experience is that not all that many collectors do this.

Re: [MOPO] European bidders and non-us posters

2014-03-23 Thread filip de volder
A lot of poster collectors collect posters from their own country , in my
auctions US posters are mainly bought by US buyers , belgian posters mainly by
belgian collectors etc ... some people will collect an actor/actress or a
genre and may have a special interest in foreign released posters but the
general movie poster collector tends to buy the items released in his country
...
same goes for a lot of collectible things , like vinyl records , UK collectors
will be more after the first UK release of a record , unless they're totally
into a band and then they'll want foreign releases with different picture
sleeves too ...
This is not an exact science , it's like saying germans have no sense of humour
or that the dutch would bite a 10 cent coin in two to have 2 coins .

Thanks for the input, Alan, but from what you say it would appear you are not
European and also basing your opinion on very narrow criteria. I really would
like as many non-US subscribers as possible to give a view here.

Re: [MOPO] European bidders and non-us posters

2014-03-23 Thread Bruce Hershenson
Tommy, there *IS *a much higher percentage of non-U,S, buyers on non-U.S.
items, and and a much lower percentage of non-U,S, buyers on U.S.lobby
cards and one-sheets.

Of course, there are many U.S. collectors who buy non-U.S. items and vice
versa, but we are talking overall.

Since we auction 2,000 to 3,000 items per week and we ship around 100
packages each day, we certainly have a large enough sample size!

Our truly awe-inspiring collection of 999 vintage single 8" x 10" stills
(including 185 incredible female portraits!) closes in a few hours at
*http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/sort/4/15.html*,
and while there has been very spirited bidding on the best ones, there are
still lots and lots of them that are far under where similar vintage stills
have sold for in the past (I wonder if they are being overlooked, precisely
because there are just so excellent ones among the 999).

Is *THIS *a $3 still? It will be sold at that price, unless there are
additional bids!

low prices (there are currently 287 at $5 or under). See for yourself

these close soon, and there are 999 to look through!

Hi Paul, thanks for that and to the others who responded, some good ideas - and
the reallyusefulboxes sound like a possible solution. Certainly preferable to
this radical idea of hanging them on the wall ;-)
