When our lovable art-house film snob Kirb from Austin gives a mainstream 
popcorn film his endorsement, you know that hell hath indeed frozen over - and 
that his words should demand "greater" attention.

NO SPOILERS.

Saw it Thursday night in IMAX (reserved seating, no camp outs!). This is a film 
for Star Wars fans only, of which there are millions. Gloriously "retro" - the 
humor is tonally perfect and it has more emotion than I expected - (with one 
exception that I won't reveal).  It's a "sequel" that felt more like a remake - 
with a narrative pathway for a new generation of appealing actors and story 
lines for what is now a Disney product. 

Hard to believe Disney and J.J. Abrams finally accomplished what Lucas could 
not with his flat "pre-quels." I mean, the type of sideways chuckles in this 
film felt like Episode IV and V. No boring politicking which bogged down the 
pre-quels.  There were also a lot of "throw-away" lines and glimpses of stuff 
that made this movie glide.  

Finally, I loved how everything looked beat-up - with sets that reminded me of 
1977 and 1980.  I strongly feel it deserves at least nominations for Best 
Picture and Best Director - even if it doesn't win. The film made me feel like 
a kid again.  Didn't want it to end.  When the end credits suddenly appeared, 
the audience burst into applause. - d.

For those of you who are interested, I saw STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS today 
in Imax 3D — and it was VERY entertaining. Those who know me know that I have 
never been a fanboy for STAR WARS, but this film is so extremely well crafted 
and with good story and high production values that I was quickly taken in. The 
new scoring of the STAR WARS music was excellent, with some new themes and, of 
course, reprises of the old ones. The score was one of the great things about 
it. The new characters and the actors who play them are very good, too. I would 
not hesitate to recommend this. I wouldn’t say that my expectations were 
exactly low, but there was a residual skepticism within me. I think J.J. Abrams 
took care of that. There is truly something for kids, adolescents and adults in 
the film.
