Re: [MOPO] FA: THIS WEEK HERITAGE has DETOUR, DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE, FASTER PUSSYCAT, & More- 364 lots

2023-03-29 Thread Matt Johnston
It’s a marvelous poster Alan, thank you! Here is a shot of the back, which is
just as clean as the front. I can’t make out any inventory numbers myself.

Adam — My vacuum board was made by me back when I was more adventurous. Perf
steel sheet sanded and painted a bunch of time until smooth, built over a 1x4
wood frame with lots of ribs to combat sagging, two inlets for shop vacs
depending on how much suction I need.

Were the photos embedded for anyone?

2023-03-29 Thread Matt Johnston
For color reference… This is an unused example I bought from Alan Alder many
many years ago. He said it had only been unfolded once for his picture. I
unfolded it a 2nd time for these photos and it’s been in a flat file since. My
photo setup was designed to get a true and honest representation of color,
detail and condition — no added sharpening and absolutely no added color
saturation. Yuck. This was shot on a vacuum board with color steady strobes and
color corrected, honestly, to the best of my ability so that I end up with good
consistency between various batched of pictures. I guess it’s possible
uploading to imgur for hosting (where they probably recompressing it) could
slightly affect color representation. And of course the screen you are viewing
it on might not be color correction, etc., etc...

That all said, this is probably as close as you’ll come to a “reference"
example.

Apologies if the pics don’t embed… I never was quite sure how to do that here.

Re: [MOPO] English one sheets

2018-09-25 Thread Matt Johnston
The block EMI logo wasn’t used until 1976:
http://www.closinglogos.com/page/EMI+Films+%28UK%29

Keep in mind the person selling the the duo-tone English 1-sheets has no
relation to Studio Canal. So none of this info is “according to Studio Canal…”
— it’s according some some seller on eBay.

They’ve been listing the Peeping Tom 1-sheets with the block EMI logo as
original release also. There is a much different (and much more rare) day-glo
English export 1-sheet that turned up in France that is almost certainly from
the first release. It uses the Anglo-Amalgamated logo, the same distribution
company that released Peeping Tom in England in 1960.

http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/11353878.html

My money would be on most/all of those duo-tone English 1-sheets being
re-release posters.

Reprint for sure.

No greens/blues in the clouds, contrast to strong, shadows and gradients are
off, skin tones on couple in the lower left are off, and the top/bottom shows
too obvious of a transition where the original image (grey) was placed on a new
background (white) for printing.

color-matched images of both an original and a bootleg in this thread:

Re: [MOPO] Scarey story- not for small children or mentally disturbed adults.. warning may cause anxiety,

2014-10-20 Thread Matt Johnston
Sorry, Peter, but this line isn’t even close to the truth…

"China(the worst polluter in history)"

It’s wrong in two important ways:

1. Aggregate historical emission — China cannot hold a candle to the US:
http://conservationmagazine.org/2013/06/visualizing-carbon/

Aggregate Carbon Emissions from Fossil Fuel Use 1751-2006
US = 334 Gt
Russia/USSR = 113 Gt
China = 101 Gt
Germany = 81 Gt
UK = 73 Gt

I’ve included the visualization of this data in this message below, if it
doesn’t come through on MOPO visit the link above and scroll down to the bubble
graph.

2. Per capita emissions — The average Chinese citizen uses less than 1/3 the
carbon that a US citizen uses:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita

While China has recently overtaken the US in terms of *annual* emissions (which
is probably what you were referring to), the two countries are still very close
and more importantly China hasn’t been at it nearly as long as the US. The US
and other developed economies (Europe/Japan) are almost entirely responsible
for BACKLOG of carbon in our atmosphere — even more so after you factor in
population.

I think it is extremely disingenuous to point to China’s or India's
inaction as an excuse for our own inaction.

Basically by burning gigatons of carbon over the last century the US has made
huge amounts of money and gotten to the point where we have a massive, robust
and fairly stable economy. Now we are trying to say that newly developing
countries — who only recently began to use carbon fuel more intensively and
typically only because US/Euro companies started putting factories there --
should be held to the same standard that we are otherwise we won’t make ANY
changes. Sure, it may be bad for our economy to sign on to carbon emission
reductions, but it’s absurd to try to reframe the discussion into some sort of
"shared problem" when the US is historically responsible for 1/4 to 1/3rd of it.

My $0.02.

Re: [MOPO] Can you spot the deception?

2014-09-08 Thread Matt Johnston
It’s worse than that… here is their first listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GOLDFINGER-1964-U-S-1-sheet-near-mint-James-Bond-007-/121428506463

I kindly pointed out that it is in fact *not* a first release poster from 1964,
but that it's one of the 1980s re-release posters. I pointed him to the
authentication page and told him you can tell by the placement of the title.
No response. I check a day later and the item was relisted -- now with a stock
photo of a 1964 poster and he removed his photo of the title block on his 80s
re-release poster!

This deception is 100% intentional. I would encourage anyone with extra time
to report the listing as fraudulent. I already have.

Re: [MOPO] would you buy it?

2014-08-25 Thread Matt Johnston
They actually auctioned this same poster off back in September 2013 for $9,000
including BP. Presumably it was returned after the buyer examined it in person
and the sales result mysteriously disappeared from their archive. A few weeks
ago I emailed them to ask if it was the same copy and if so why it was being
re-auctioned. They never replied….

There is a thread on this exact topic over at APF. My favorite was a post by

3-sheets for Metropolis pasted up on the wall!
