This is scheduled to start happening in the U.S. in just a little over a
year (2012). There is a strong movement afoot in governments all over
the world to stop letting all this online commerce continue to go on
without the appropriate taxes being paid. The global recession has
increased the pressure for them to cut themselves in on the internet
pie. I'm surprised it has taken them this long. If I owned a brick and
mortar store and had to compete with the internet I would have been
pressuring my law-makers to start taxing internet sellers (like they do
everyone else) long ago.

Yes, I received an email from eBay saying that they are supplying sales information plus personal details for the last few years to the Tax department.
