This is the Minnesota Birding Report for March 17th, 2011.

On the 11th, Bill Unzen reported a CLARK'S NUTCRACKER which he had seen
briefly in northeastern Lac qui Parle County in a spruce stand on the
south side of 330th Street. This is about a quarter of a mile east of
state highway 119. Despite several searches over the next few days, no
one has seen the bird since.

Bruce Monson reported twenty LONG-TAILED DUCKS were still at Agate Bay
in Two Harbors, Lake County on the 17th.

On the 16th, Kim Eckert reported that there was still a GREAT
BLACK-BACKED at Canal Park in Duluth.

On the 11th, Brian Smith reported several migrant ROSS'S GEESE at the
Sleepy Eye sewage ponds in Brown County, and the spring's first TURKEY
VULTURE was seen on the 16th by Bob Dunlap near the Gustavus Adolphus
campus in St. Peter, Nicollet County.

Other widely reported spring migrants include TUNDRA SWAN, SNOW GOOSE,
CACKLING GOOSE, NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN WIGEON, RUDDY DUCK, MERLIN,
COMMON LOON, GREAT BLUE HERON, AMERICAN COOT, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN
BLUEBIRD, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, and
COMMON GRACKLE.

The next scheduled update of this tape is March 24th, 2011.

[mou-net] Turkeys Trumpeters!

2011-03-18 Thread Kathy Confer
I was on a business retreat yesterday (Thurs) in the conference cottage at
St Croix River Bluffs Regional Park (Washington Co). As I drove from Rte 10
onto St Croix Trail and proceeded up the hill to the left curve in the road,
I saw at least 40 wild turkeys feeding in the yard of the house on the
right side of the road (they have a lot of feeders up and I suspect that
they also provide sustenance for the gobblers, as well). A few of the
turkeys were displaying...Then, further up St Croix Trail, about 1/2 mile
before the St Croix Bluffs park entrance, I had a beautiful low flyover of 6
trumpeters swans. They continued flying over the farm fields to the
northeast...

During the retreat, as we sat in the cottage with a wall of windows
overlooking the St Croix River, I couldn't help noticing eagle activity: an
adult pair landed on the ice at the base of the tree-covered hill below the
cottage, a couple of adults flew individually up the river, and late in the
day an immature gave us good looks heading south on the MN side of the river
at eye level. What a way to do business! Glad I stumbled on this retreat
location while out birding in the Prescott area earlier this winter ;-)

Re: [mou-net] Long-tailed ducks

2011-03-18 Thread linda whyte
Ben Wilson wishes to express thanks for the posting of those
Long-tailed ducks in Agate Bay. He has just scoped and counted 38 of
them, near the coal-chute docks, as seen from the breakwater.

[mou-net] Dakota County - Lake Byllesby and Hastings Great Egret

2011-03-18 Thread Scott Loss
My wife and I birded between Lake Byllesby and Hastings and came up with
several early migrants. The 1000+ geese at Lake Byllesby were still present,
but difficult to view down at the west end of the lake. We saw numerous
Greater-white fronted and Cackling Geese with the Canadas, but could not spot
any Snow Geese, despite thorough scoping. Several common waterfowl species
included Ring-necked and Ruddy Duck, Lesser Scaup, Goldeneye, C. Merganser,
Gadwall, Wigeon. Grackles and Robins were see in several spots around the
lake, but Horned Larks were probably the most common songbird of the day.

Cruising the farm fields between Lake Byllesby and Hastings was pretty
unproductive, except for larks and one flooded field that had Green-winged Teal
and Gadwall. Somewhere between Canon Falls and Hastings seemed to be the line
where fields became frozen instead of having some open water. Lake Rebecca park
in Hastings was very productive (mostly at the aerated pond) where we saw a
Great Egret (a bit early?), Great Blue Heron, Pied-billed Grebe, Scaup,
Ring-necks, and a flock of Ring-billed Gulls.

A Pied billed grebe was working the west side about 300 yds north of the dam.
It was very near a lone coot and both were near the shore.
