[mou-net] MBW schedule update

2013-08-27 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Just a brief posting here to mention that the MBWbirds website
(http://mbwbirds.com) was updated today, with the registration status for all
the Minnesota Birding Weekends and Weeks, along with the summaries of the
completed MBWs.

Note that an additional South Texas MBWeek is still scheduled if there enough
registrations: on either Dec 26, 2013 - Jan 1, 2014 or Feb 24 - Mar 2, 2014,
whichever dates can accommodate the most participants.

Included on the website as well are some additional revisions to A Birder's
Guide to Minnesota. Although the book became out-of-print in 2012, updated
bird-finding information will continue to be included here periodically. (Also
discontinued in 2012 was the Birding by Hindsight series of bird ID articles
in The Loon, but these will continue to be archived on the website.)

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

(Note: This is the 28th season of MBWs, which are offered in association with
the MOU – we were originally known as MOU Birding Weekends. The MOU annually
receives a portion of MBW receipts in return for these schedule and
registration updates on mou-net and in the MOU newsletter.)

[mou-net] Buff-breasted Sandpipers, Jirik Sod Farms (8/26)

2013-08-27 Thread Forbes, Andrew
Apolpgies for the delayed post:

Yesterday at @400PM, I saw five Buff-breasted Sandpipers at Jirik Sod Farms
(Dakota Co.). They were at the location described in the previous post, on
the southernmost green field on the west side of the road (Blaine Ave.)
across from the farm office building. The birds were quite far from the
road but visible using a scope. Not much else going on out there, except a
lone Killdeer and a few Rock Pigeons.

Good birding,
Andy Forbes, Dakota Co.

[mou-net] state fair MOU booth

2013-08-27 Thread kkelnberger
I had a great time on Friday night and Saturday morning. Kids love the
wheel and lots of adults as well. The new old light board was a hit
as well. Many would ponder all of the pictures and were very proud when
they could name most. I was surprised that many could figure out the
Red-eye Vireo just by the name and the eye color! Gave the mentor flyer
to many parents ( and kids). Many were interested in hawk ridge and the
raptor release. I was convinced that this MOU project is well worth the
effort! Kate Kelnberger

I agree. It was especially fun to meet several VERY young bird enthusiasts
waiting in the wings to take center stage, and the families who support
their interest. There's hope for the future, here and there in those crowds.

[mou-net] Fw: [mou-net] state fair MOU booth

2013-08-27 Thread Sid Stivland
I will second Kate's observation. I had the 9 - 1 shift on Thurs, Mon, and
today. I shared the booth with Earl Orf, Rich Peet, 2 of Earl's grandsons
and a couple of my kid assistants. We saw literally hundreds of kids,
parents and grandparents. Both the wheel and the board were a hit and got
lots of attention. Today, we took Steve's suggestion and had the board out
front and, I believe the participation increased four-fold. Many were
fascinated by trying to ID the birds. I vote for having the board every
year. (one technical challenge - I think it would be great if we could
somehow incorporate bird songs - I found many people were fascinated by
simple things like a catbird's meow). We also had many people show us
photos of birds they had taken on their smartphones. Lots of folks wanted
to share observations or ask questions. And, as usual, the kids were a
highlight.

Many thanks to whoever brought new ink pads yesterday. I brought new ones
on Thursday, but they were already getting tired by today. It is my
opinion that these kid-safe, water-based ink pads are very short-lived. I
would STRONGLY suggest someone provide additional new ones for the last half
of the fair. I also suggest we start with new ones next year.

One last point - what happened to the eagle stamp? I could not locate in
our materials and it is one of our most popular ones. I will look for a new
one and I would also encourage others to keep a lookout for a new eagle
stamp.
