[mou-net] Lake Byllesby shorebirds
After a rather slow spring, Lake Byllesby is living up to its reputation as a great shorebird spot today. This morning there were several hundred shorebirds, including Stilts, Leasts, Pecs, Semipalmated, Baird's, and White-rumped Sandpipers, plus Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plovers, and Wilson's Phalaropes. Also present was a late pair of Greater White-fronted Geese. The birds are on the mudflats across the lake, so a scope is needed. [mou-net] Lake Byllesby shorebirds, 180th St. Marsh, Dakota Cty
On April 1st, the engineers for the Lake Byllesby dam started filling the lake to the winter level. The lake will later be filled to the summer level, but for now, it has some good shorebird habitat. Early this pm, I saw several flocks of shorebirds on the west side of Byllesby, accessed from the gate entrance beyond the railroad tracks, along Hwy 88, 1/4 mile east of Randolph. Follow the road to the birding trail(s), on the right or left. The birds were to the left (east), where there is some water, seen from both beach lookouts. I also viewed them from the beach, accessed by hiking the mowed grass trail at the left side of the gate for about 1/4 mile. A grassy side trail will take you down to a lookout. Seen today: Both Yellowlegs, Wilson’s Snipe, Pectoral Sandpiper, Killdeer. 34 White Pelicans were also present. The wind was pretty fierce. There is still a nice variety of waterfowl at 180th St. Marsh, along with hundreds of coots, a few pied-billed grebes, many Red-winged Blackbirds and a few Yellow-headed Blackbirds, which should soon be everywhere. I did see Rusty Blackbirds as I entered 180th St. from Hwy 85. I did not see the Wilson’s Snipe today, and missed the American Bittern again. It was a pleasant day though, in spite of the the wind, and as often happens, I enjoyed meeting another birder looking for the same birds! FYI: Highway 86 is closed, due to a long period of construction for an overpass on Hwy 52. Detours are marked. [mou-net] Lake Byllesby shorebirds today
Finally, today between 3:45 and 4:30 pm, I saw hundreds of shorebirds at Lake Byllesby, spread out from Lakeside Cemetery to the far west end. Most of you have seen a greater variety of species at Bass Ponds, 180th St., and elsewhere by now, but I am pleased that the Lake Byllesby extensive shorebird habitat has attracted a larger number of shorebirds at last! It was good to see so many of them, plus hundreds of Tree and Barn Swallows, which were snapping up recently hatched insects in the rain. Wilson's Phalarope 8 Dowitcher species 4 Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs: many Pectoral Sandpiper: many Semipalmated and Least Sandpiper: many The light rain became heavier soon, so I had to leave. [mou-net] Lake Byllesby Shorebirds ~ Dakota Co.
Late this morning at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County Susan Schumacher and I observed a spectacular breeding Black-bellied Plover out on the mudflats. Other shorebirds present were ~ Sanderling, Short-billed Dowitchers, Willet, Dunlin, Semipalmated Plovers, White-rumped, Least, Pectoral, Solitary, Spotted, and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Wilson's Phalaropes and both Yellowlegs. Conny Brunell Richfield, Hennepin Co. Lake Byllesby From Randolph and MN. State 56 turn east onto Dakota County 88 (292nd. St.). Lake Byllesby is on the south side of the highway. In .2 mile there is a driveway to your right with limited parking and a gate, do not block the gate. Walk behind the gate, down the hill and look for an opening in the trees looking east to the mudflats. There is also another access another .2 m east of here, pull into the Lake Side Cemetery and walk the road to the east and view the mudflats. A spotting scope would be recommended to see across the extensive mudflats. Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
Re: [mou-net] Lake Byllesby Shorebirds ~ Dakota Co.
A reminder that today, May 15, is the date in which they begin raising water levels to summer pool levels. So get 'em while you can. Also, yesterday afternoon I searched the lake and found a grand total of ONE shorebird, a Dunlin. That was it. Honest.
