Are there any Big Day activities planned in the East or North Metro area? My friend Chris and I are just north of Stillwater and looking for suggestions. Missy Bowen Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
Re: [mou-net] Saturday May 12 Old Cedar Bridge
I had a similar experience birding at Veteran's Park in Richfield and at Wood Lake Sat AM. Vet's Park yielded only a Gray Cheeked Thrush aad Least Flycatcher (and dozens of singing Tenn's, Yellows and a Redstart. Wood Lake had a couple of Yellow Rumps and a lone Wilson's. Not quiet what with all the Orioles and Tenn's but little else to see (or hear) Warren Woessner From: Minnesota Birds [MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU] on behalf of Nick Mattsson [njmatts...@comcast.net] Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 3:11 PM To: MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU Subject: Re: [mou-net] Saturday May 12 Old Cedar Bridge I spent an hour down by the Minnesota River in Bloomington yesterday morning and saw very little. Once that green curtain so tightly is drawn, So that only the patient or lucky may see: You know that they're there And too soon will be gone, So heed more to the sound and less to the feather Of those birds so well hidden or sing, Woe is me. Hang in there and do the best that you can. I guess if we continue to have such springs, we'll need spy cameras in the canopy to know who's passing by. [mou-net] Saturday, March 17, 82 degrees!
I spent a few hours today at Wild River State Park in Chisago County. When I arrived at the visitor center, there was a noisy red-shouldered hawk soaring low over the parking lot. I had to wait an hour but the the Carolina wren finally made an appearance giving a nice look. Lots of fox sparrows plus juncos, tree sparrows, song sparrows, bluebirds, waxwings and two eagles on the nest at the river. 28 species in 3 hours. [mou-net] Saturday birding frustration
Started the day out at Old Cedar Bridge. Saw nothing new or exciting. Yesterday someone reported seeing kinglets, grebes, Nelsons Sparrow and a dozen different warblers. Then went to Veterans Memorial Park in Richfield and again saw nothing much. Leaving the park I get a needs alert posted by a guy who'd been there an hour earlier who saw kinglets, grebes, a yellow-bellied sapsucker and a passenger pigeon. Clearly I've taken a step back in my birding career as I am seeing absolutely nothing new any more. Ugh! [mou-net] Saturday Birding
On Saturday Kristin Snobeck and I went down to the Old Cedar Bridge and I had a pretty good day. Once again we saw the young white tailed deer off the boardwalk and Kristin got some pretty good pictures. We also found a snapping turtle about the size of a quarter struggling to make it to the water. Birds seen: Green Heron RT Hummingbird Pied Billed Grebe Common Yellowthroat American Redstart Blue Gray Gnatcatcher E Phoebe Northern Shoveler Killdeer Cedar Waxwing Turkey Vulture Bald Eagle Loads of Great Crested Cormorants Nothing terribly exciting but a very fun day. [mou-net] Saturday Hok-si-lah Warbler bird hike
I am leading the annual MRVAC warbler field trip to Hok-si-lah and Frontinac this Saturday. We are meeting at the Hok-si-lah parking lot at 7:30am. Hok-si-lah is a Lake City park on the Mississippi River about an hour plus a little south of the Twin Cities. The paths are wide and easily accomodate a group. It is open to non-members and is free. There is no reason to call to check unless you need directions. Bring a picnic lunch. There should be enough birding trails to last until the last birders put down their binocs. It looks like it will be a good warbler hike.
