[mou-net] White-winged Dove
Shock a roonies!!! The last time I saw a white-winged dove was about 20 years ago in my back yard in PHx., Az. So! Here, Now, in my back yard, in Alexandria, Mn. I saw a young White-Winged Dove in my back yard!!! It was a slam dunk because of the distinctive blue orbital ring. I opened the patio door to take a photo, but that noice caused its resting position in the sunlight, to move, skirting around the White Spruce tree to my neighbor's yard, thus concealing it from my view. Oh my gosh, I’d love to get a photo! Sincerely, Judy, Douglas County, Alexandria, Mn. PS, If you’d like to stalk the dove, send an email to me and I’ll send directions. A White-winged Dove was reported on the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Two Harbors, and Sharon and I were able to relocate it yesterday. The bird has apparently been present for a week. This afternoon 5/25, Ben Fritchman, Dave Grosshuesch, John Hokema and I found a White-winged Dove in Two Harbors along 1st Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Street. We also saw a Grasshopper Sparrow and Western Meadowlark in the grassy area west of the wastewater treatment plant, and flyover Caspian Tern and Purple Martin downtown. [mou-net] White-winged Dove - possible sad news?
I have possible sad news to report on the White-winged Dove, just in case this affects the decisions of other birders who have contacted me about visiting. To the best of my knowledge, the bird was last spotted at our feeders yesterday (Thursday) afternoon around 4:30 pm. I wasn't around much, but I have not seen the bird today and I think that those who tried today missed it. On top of this, we found a roadkill dove a little more than a mile from our house at an intersection crosswalk; like it may have been 'stuck' to a bumper and fell off when the vehicle stopped, meaning it could have been hit even closer to our house. I got out and checked the bird to see it it was the WWDO, but it was too badly damaged to identify. It did appear to have a lot of white feathers around the wing area, but those could have been MODO tail feathers pushed up--it was just too difficult to tell. I hope I'm wrong and I hope the bird is still alive and either moved on by its own free will or is due to return any time now, but I thought I should report its possible death before anyone traveled a long distance to see it. If it returns, I'll post the good news immediately. Shawn Conrad Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] White Winged Dove
I went to Grand Rapids (La Prairie) on Tuesday after reading Shawn's last post. I got there just in time to be almost swept away by the torrential rains that came. From 5:30 -8:30 I sat at Shawn's fighting the mosquito's and rain. I saw one fly by, a landing with the wings and tail spread out and a take off. I tried to catch up with the bird but it was always on the move. Shawn saw it on the ground under some evergreens and he assumed I saw it. While sitting in my van fighting the insects that came in, the rain drizzling down the windows, and the fog on the window, I had to admit I didn't see it. I spent the night and went back at 6:40 only to be informed that it just left. I stayed until 9:30 and had to leave for a council meeting back in Little Falls. I saw one more fly by, many more mosquito's, and a lot more rain. [mou-net] White-winged Dove update
I've had a few people contact me about the timing of the dove. The last visits we have noticed were 6:30 - 7:30 pm yesterday, 8:00 am, 10:30 am, and just now at 3:00 pm today (it is currently feeding out there). Previous visits were in the early morning and late afternoon, so it seems like any time is a possibility. It was behaving very aggressively (chasing and nipping) toward a Mourning Dove this morning and seems to co-exist around pigeons and squirrels. This morning, a White-winged Dove briefly visited my feeders near Grand Rapids. I was able to snap a documentation photo of the bird, but unfortunately it was a film camera because my digital was out in the car and I couldn't get it without flushing the dove. I suspect this bird may have been around for some time because I was away in SW Minnesota doing MNBBA surveys and now that I have returned, there has occasionally been a dove sitting partially-obscured in the same hanging basket feeder the dove was at this morning that none of us paid much attention to until I noticed the wing stripe and tail today when it was perched on the edge of the feeder. Hopefully it decides to stay for a while--I have millet and sunflower chips out for it. [mou-net] White-winged Dove, Short-eared Owl, Nelson's Sparrow at 40th Ave West / Erie Pier, Duluth, 10/8/09
Extensive searching throughout the day by multiple parties failed to refind the White-winged Dove at the 40th Ave West/Erie Pier area in Duluth, including an unsuccessful search by yours truly between 8:30 and 9:30 AM, but at 5:35 PM this afternoon (Thursday, 8 October) the dove was seen in flight by Barb and Denny Martin and myself. We watched it fly into a stand of aspen and willows bordering a small pond at the northwest corner of the impoundment, and a few minutes later we found it perched just above eye level near the trunk of a 3 inch dbh aspen. The bird was still in this location when we left at 6:00 PM. Other noteworthy sightings at the 40th Ave West/Erie Pier area today include a Short-eared Owl found by Kim Eckert and the Martins, and a stunning adult Nelson's Sparrow that flushed from a grassy area on the west side of the impoundment and perched in full sun, where I admired it for two minutes early this morning. Thirteen species of Emberizids were seen at this location today, and a 14th species -- Chipping Sparrow -- was found at Park Point. No one reported Le Conte's Sparrow or Smith's Longspur, both of which were seen here 10/4/2009. Karl Bardon joined us at the 40th Ave West/Erie Pier area and after two hours of searching the entire area, we refound the White-winged Dove at approximately the same location at 6:05 PM. This time, it flew several hundred yards in a northwesterly direction and probably found a place to roost for the night. Karl was able to obtain an identifiable image of the dove in flight. The approximate GPS coordinates where it was originally found are as follows: 46.73957 -92.14358 Other species of interest included a Smith's Longspur and a Le Conte's Sparrow -- one of 9 sparrow species at this location. [mou-net] White-winged Dove, major Common Nighthawk passage - Duluth (8/24)
Thanks to Peder Svingen for passing along word of the White-winged Dove. I stumbled upon the bird last evening (~5:15 PM; 8/24) perched singly on a telephone wire, just south of the intersection of Superior Street and 54th Avenue East, but north of the railroad tracks. The bird remained there long enough for me to pull over, grab the bins, and secure a good look before, of course, taking off as soon as I went for the cell phone. It flew SW over the railroad tracks towards the intersection where 52nd Avenue East and Dodge Street team up to run into Superior Street. I proceeded to circle the neighborhood for the better part of a half hour in a fruitless attempt to try to refind the bird. Anyhow, while it seems likely that this bird is ancient history by now, if anyone is in the neighborhood, it may still be worth a look. I drove by the 54th Avenue location today and, not surprisingly, no White-winged Dove was to be seen. Also last night, Josh Bednar and I surveyed the nighthawk scene from atop an apartment complex along Superior Street at 60th Avenue East, Lakeside. It appeared as though the flight had a pretty abrupt start, with practically zero (100) tallied at Hawk Ridge in the afternoon/early evening before the count was wrapped up at 5:30 PM. We noted the first sizable group at approximately 6:10 PM, with 1,200 passing by in the following 20 minutes, mainly looking towards Hawk Ridge (inland) from our site. However, as the night wore on, the flocks of birds morphed into a dispersed stream of nighthawks that eventually were flying overhead and along the lakeshore. Birds were counted in 15 minute time bands, the lowest being 800 birds, the highest just shy of 1500, but a pretty steady passage over the course of the next two hours. The flight was basically over at or before 8:30 PM, with a total of 10,379 nighthawks winging their way past the rooftop in nearly two hour's time! However, as it now turns out, this appeared to be merely a precursor for tonight's movement (8/25). Karl Bardon reported the final figure from Hawk Ridge at a whopping 13,154 nighthawks, equaling 23,533 in the last two nights. Approximately 11,000 of the Hawk Ridge birds today were seen from 4:20 PM onwards, with the flight dwindling noticeably towards dusk. Tonight's movement was almost all on the lakeshore, scope-scanned from the ridge. As a first timer to fall migration in Duluth, this was truly an amazing spectacle.
