[mou-net] Rarities

2011-11-08 Thread Al Schirmacher
The recent rash of Midwestern rarities drives the question, what percentage of
rarities are seen by birders? Does the presence of a Vermillion Flycatcher
mean that ten are in the Midwest? How would one answer such a question?

How many square miles is the state of minnesota?

the 12th largest state)

This is the only fact I have to base any hypothesis on.

How many serious birders are in minnesota that would recognize a rarity?

(I'd guess mou members and mou / mnbird subscribers make up the
majority)

How many hours are these individuals "bird watching"?

(Me 10-20 hrs a week?? Out of 168 available. Most of this on my one acre
property and not a lot beyond. Others like yourself many more.)

How many square miles are inhabitable or impassable for humans, but not
for birds?

(Majority of birdy habitat is not easily accessible, land or water.)

How often even when Seen or heard is a rarity unidentifiable or perhaps
not excepted?

(Think records committee)

How many birds migrate or move during dark hours?

(Majority rules again)

How close to state boundaries are some rarities regularly seen?

I'd bet there could be multiple vermilion flycatchers probably not
multiple scrub jays)

How many more questions like this can we ask?

(Many)

Number of rarities seen or verified vs unseen?

Answer: I'd bet easily into the hundreds maybe thousands.

[mou-net] New National Geo Guide Review

Hi All--

For those of you interested in my opinion, I have reviewed in my blog the
just-published 6th edition of National Geographic's Field Guide to the
Birds of North America.

Although I do receive a very small percentage from sales through my blog, I
have no financial ties to National Geographic.

[mou-net] Field Sparrow - Hyland Park Reserve

2011-11-08 Thread Ben Harste
Sorry I'm a bit late on this since this is from yesterday afternoon, but I
went birding at Hyland Park Reserve for about an hour yesterday afternoon.

The biggest highlight was finding a Field Sparrow that flushed out of the
grass on the southwest edge of Hyland Lake. I didn't think much of it
other than it being a bit late until eBird flagged it as a rarity in the
month of November and sure enough looking at the MOU database there seems
to be only a few records of Field Sparrows in November and December.
Although I did not have my camera, I have no doubt it was a Field Sparrow,
as it had a very distinct white eye-ring and an obviously pink beak along
with other regular features of a Field Sparrow. It was flushed up along
with one or two Song Sparrows.

There was also a ton of waterfowl on Hyland Lake, although I could not
identify it all since I didn't have my spotting scope. They included:
Northern Shovelers - At least 80 all in a very tight circle dabbling
together
Gadwall
Ring-necked Duck - A few
Ruddy Duck - 3

Lastly, I couldn't confirm but I am pretty sure there are still Rusty
Blackbirds foraging on the south side of the lake on the western half,
fairly visible from the northern and western sides of Hyland Lake. I have
seen Rusty Blackbirds there once last week (or two weeks ago) as well, so
it seems they are frequenting the lake.

[mou-net] Sandhill Crane Finds New Home-- another from WRC

Helping An Injured Sandhill Crane

Our newest case study is a wonderful story of a team of people coming
together to help an injured Sandhill Crane.

The crane's injury was noticed several months ago, but capturing it was
daunting. The home owner finally lured the crane, who shows decreased fear
of humans, into her garage.

Once it was captured, the crane made two trips: one to WRC and then to the
Raptor Education Group, Inc., where it'll live out its life.

Learn more about this
 crane's
story and see what CVT Chris and Vet Leslie found on the x-rays that they're
examining in the above photo.

[mou-net] plain-tailed wren duet research--- from Science Now

2011-11-08 Thread G Andersson
This article reports research on the duet singing of this wren species from
Ecuador. Given its name, could this be the only wren species without a
barred tail? Anyway there are links in the text to listen to the duet and
the single song.. also a link to the original journal article for those who
like neurology. I don't think there are any duetting bird species in N
America, but there are in Africa. I would guess their finding apply to all
such species worldwide, but who knows?
