[mou-net] Spotted Towhee still present, Lauderdale, Ramsey County

2017-11-24 Thread Jeanne Tanamachi
A Spotted Towhee is sporadically present in our back yard. It is seen most
reliably from about 7-8 AM and again later in the afternoon before dark. It may
also be present at different times during the day but is much harder to predict
then. From where it hangs out, I don't think it can be seen from the street. If
you are interested in trying for the bird, let me know. Jeanne Tanamachi

Mild weather has returned to the northwest this week, and most of our snow

here in the north west.

at Mary Lou Marchand's feeder in Bemidji reported last week were observed
by Liz Harper on November 18.

as of November 21. A FOX SPARROW has also been there recently. A SNOWY OWL
in southern Polk County was reported by Leon Thoreson on November 19. He
also saw three Lapland longspurs and one snow bunting near Climax. A rusty
blackbird was reported by Bruce Flaig in his yard in southern Polk County on
November 18.

>From Hubbard County, Marshall Howe reported a few COMMON REDPOLLS, and up to
8 PINE GROSBEAKS this week.

[mou-net] Goshawk - Hennepin and Glaucous Gull - Wright

2017-11-24 Thread Justin Watts
Today Annabelle and I spent some time birding around Crow-Hassan Park and
nearby fields. In the park we were surprised to come across an immature
Northern Goshawk at close range. Not a typical encounter in Hennepin County.
The bird didn't seem to be in a hurry to leave as it flew back and forth near
the river, making a half-hearted attempt at capturing a Red-Bellied Woodpecker.
We left as it roosted high off the ground in a dense tree. Of course it may
just be passing through. Annabelle shared her photo - https://flic.kr/p/21Lotpy

Another good bird nearby was an apparent Glaucous Gull flyover near the
Albertville WTP in Wright County. I was watching a Bald Eagle take its pick
from the 1,000+ Mallards and Canada Geese in School Lake (adjacent to the
outlets) when a large pale-winged gull flew over heading west late in the
afternoon. No idea where it went as it didn't stop at School Lake, but it did
seem to be coming from the nearby water treatment plant along with the
Ring-Billed Gulls.
