Re: [Mpls] Theft at Lake Nokomis

2002-07-17 Thread Barbara L. Nelson

My son lived in a duplex near 24th and Clinton. The estranged husband of the
woman upstairs threw a molotov cocktail on the front porch one night about 3
a.m. Fortunately, both my son and his roommate worked at bars and arrived home
only about 1/2 hour before then and the roommate smelled smoke, awakened my son
and they helped the woman, her mother and two children upstairs to safety. The
entire place went up in flames.

My son told me that the police found a gasoline can and rags in a nearby
dumpster, and my son had overheard several screaming matches in the days previous
to this, as well as threats from the husband to the effect that he would kill his
estranged wife.

Apparently that was not enough to arrest him. My son made numerous phone calls
to follow up on the case, gathered evidence himself, etc. After six months, he
gave up. To add insult to injury, the next morning before he could clear out
what was salvageable of his stuff he was robbed and lost nearly everything he had
of value.

This crime was not investigated and neither was the time he got robbed last year
-- in the Lyn-Lake neighborhood -- once by some thief pushing in his air
conditioner while he was at work. When a second attempted was made to rob him he
happened to be home, and actually saw the guy. He immediately called 911, but
the police didn't arrive for 20 minutes and by that time the guy was long gone.

In both cases, the police took a report, but that's as far as it went.

I can understand the difficulty police have in pursuing property crimes, but it
was the arson that shocked me more. However, to give the cops the benefit of the
doubt, perhaps there was just not enough evidence to indict the guy.

It's definitely a sad state of affairs.

Any advice for Dan on how to deal with that?

I think he should deal with the Park Police not the MPD.  They are still two separate entities and if the car was broken into on Park property, it's the responsibility of the Park Police.

The case of Dan's stolen credit card was probably closed after the
preliminary report was filed. The MPD assigns 2 officers per police precinct
(there are 4 or 5 police precincts) to investigate residential property
crimes, and
they generally don't investigate car thefts and car break-ins, even in some
of the city's more fashionable neighborhoods.

On two occasions I have had the privilege of getting two separate cars
stolen from me in the city of Minneapolis.

On the morning of Friday, April 12, 2002 I got a call from a Minneapolis
resident who told me that my car had been stripped-down and abandoned
in a parkling lot near 38th and Portland, and that over a dozen other
stripped-down cars had been dumped in that particular lot during the
past year. The police were on the scene. My car was totaled: the
steering column was destroyed, the doors had been removed, the
truck lock was punched out, etc.

In 1985, I initially reported a car as "missing." It was recovered, parked
illegally next to a fire plug, with a broken window, and the collar on the
steering column was cut away. A tool used to turn the ignition switch,
a modified screw driver, was left on the floor. I was charged with parking
it illegally. An employee at the impound lot laughed and said "you got
to be kidding" when I said that I wanted the police report amended, or
have a new one filed, so that the theft of my car would be investigated.

When I run Harriet, I also park on a residential street. I only bring my drivers
license, change for a pay phone and my house and car key (leather necklace winter
large safety pin summer). This may not keep my window from getting smashed but at
least I avoid the stolen credit card nonsense.

I also jog around Lake Nokomis. This is a habitual problem. I
regularly see the glittering green rubble of another smashed window
courtesy of the wallet and purse snatchers. I am sure that they are
watching and waiting until you get halfway around the lake. and then
they do the smash-and-grab. I bet this also goes on at Calhoun and
Harriet, but I see it at Nokomis.

In addition to wanting you too far away to do anything they also want to
be able smash your window with privacy.

I have run at Nokomis virtually every day for 15 years, and have never
had a window smashed. My strategy: I park on a residential road that
abutts the lake, directly across the street from a house. Usually I park
on Woodlawn, Edgewater, or 54th Ave. A neighbor could be looking
through the window, or be drawn to the sound of tinkling glass, and so
the risk to the smash and grabbers is too high.

I think you are in the most danger of getting nailed if you park along
the side of the parkway or in the small remote parking lot at the north
end of the lake, where they are most likely to get some privacy while
helping themselves to your goods. I have also seen cars broken into at
the main parking lot, (ironically) usually when there aren't a lot of
people there

I hope this helps you from being victimized again.
