[mssms] Patching & Reboot Servers

2017-10-27 Thread Brian McDonald
Good morning,

We have been working extremely hard getting our patch compliance numbers up. We
recently, for the first time, hit over 90% compliance for last month.

A question came up recently about scheduling reboots on servers. I decided to
run a last reboot / uptime report against all servers in the environment. I
found a good handful of servers that had not removed since August. And several
servers that has not removed since last month. One suggestion brought the table
was to schedule an automated refill for the servers to help increase our paths
one effort.

Management is telling me they see no reason to schedule reboot as long as
patching work. I am looking to justify this need.

I’d be interested to hear what other folks would suggest would be legitimate
reasons for scheduled reboots. Basically they are saying SCCM how do you must
not be working if servers aren’t getting rebooted. I have, for example, found
some servers don’t receive patches if there are disconnected user logged into
the server. By bouncing the server, I was able to deploy patches no problem.
Any other use cases samples to support this would be extremely helpful.

I appreciate any help or suggestions with this.

Thanks!

Brian

Hi all,

Last week we pushed out an application that performed an agent upgrade for one
of our security tools. The deployment was configured as required with a soft
were available time of 5:00 pm. UTC. The deadline was configured as soon as
possible after the software available time.

However, the deployment actually started to kick off several hours before the
scheduled time. There is no maintenance window configured on the target
collection.

I need some help provide an explanation as to why and how this happened. I
reviewed some of the client log files and could see that the deployment have
checked off in some cases six hours prior to the 5:15 PM available time. But
this does not answer the question as to why.

Are there any settings I should be looking at in reviewing? Did I overlook
something?

What could've caused the deployment to kick off earlier than the time I
mentioned above based on the settings are used?

Thanks,

Brian

[mssms] Software Updates Issue

2016-12-21 Thread Brian McDonald
Good morning,

I'm having some interesting issues with deploying December updates. I have
created 1 SUG for the month of December that includes all products. Updates are
deploying to Servers, but not Workstations. I do configure the deployment to be
Required for all deployments (Workstations and Servers).

When I look at the Deployment under Monitoring it shows over 800 "In Progress"
there are a few handful in Error state and a few hundred in Unknown. The In
Progress states shows these are actually in "Non-Compliant" status. I checked
the Deployment Package and it has been distributed to the DP successfully.

It has been reported that some users are seeing Updates in Software Center and
they had to go in and select to download/install. Curious, why we would see
this behavior if the deployment is set to Required?

What is the best way to troubleshoot the Non-Compliant devices and why updates
aren't deploying?

Thanks,

Brian

[mssms] Windows Update Restart

2016-11-29 Thread Brian McDonald
All,

I have a SU deployment setup to some servers (Windows 2012 R2/2008 R2 mix). The
deployment was setup with the Deadline Behavior is set for Software Updates
Installation to allow updates to be deployed outside of the maintenance window.
However, I am also suppressing the reboot.

One of the Windows Server 2012 R2 servers shows the 'Windows Update. Restart
your computer to finish installing updates. Automatic restart will occur in 1
day."

Will these servers be rebooted? I thought SCCM would suppress the reboot if we
selected this option.

Thanks,

[mssms] Client Redirect script - clients still showing active in old site

2016-11-22 Thread Brian McDonald
Hey all,

I am redirecting SCCM clients to a new server using a vbs script. This process
is working great. After clients evaluate they're populating on the new site
server. One thing I noticed though, if I go back and look at the old site
server, I still see the same clients I redirected showing they're active.

What policy is being used here? Do I need to manually delete the clients from
the old site server to remove them? What is the best way to approach this?

[mssms] quick patch

2016-11-22 Thread Brian McDonald
All,

Can someone tell me how I can quickly patch say a new server that comes online
(joined to the domain) that requires patches when this machine is already a
member of a maintenance window. For example, I have servers that need to be
patched immediately once the SCCM client is installed. However, I have a MW
collection that is populating the collection by server name. Therefore, it
immediately goes into the MW collection and therefore will not patch
immediately.

Anyway to get around this?

This is likely the reason. I had to modify mine as well. You can see in

So, now that the icon is in superseded status, will the update actually deploy

To me this sounds like a custom report.
Getting what CM knows for articleID is easy, in v_updateinfo

But you've added "that sccm is pulling from to patch devices". what does that
mean to you?
anything that CM knows about and is CAPABLE of patching (whether content is
downloaded or not)?
those patches have to be downloaded--whether or not they are in a software
update group and deployed?
those patches have to be in a Software Update group--which may or may not be
deployed?
those patches have to be downloaded and in a software update group which is
currently targeted to a specific production collection?

You need more parameters to start making a custom report. But if all you
really want is "list the articleids CM knows about"

select articleid from v_updateinfo where articleid is not null and articleid <>
'' order by articleid

Yep, that’s fine. Only site assignment boundary groups have a possibility of
any conflict because only boundaries within boundary groups marked for site
assignment are published to AD. Other boundaries are simply site specific data
so there is no possibility of any type of conflict.

Jason,

I appreciate your response. As long as I disable my site assignment BG in the
old domain, I can go ahead and setup Boundaries in the new domain? Even if I'm
doing a slow/progressed migration? I want to make sure that having boundaries
configured on two primaries won't cause me issues supporting the old

Are you using ConfigMgr OSD? If so, then no, nothing in that process relies on
site assignment boundaries or boundary groups.

domain membership of managed systems. All you really need if there is no trust
is a valid network access account fo the clients in the untrusted domains to be
able to access their DP assuming it’s not in their own domain. There really is

Hello,

Does anyone have a method or process for uninstalling ALL versions of Microsoft
Live Meeting. In my environment we have approximately 9 different versions of
Live Meeting. Since the installers are all MSI based, I was hoping there would
be an easy way to script/automate the uninstall so I would only require 1
single package to get the job done in SCCM.

When I say multiple versions, here is what I mean:

8.0.6362.187

8.0.6362.202

8.0.6362.215

8.0.6362.223

8.0.6362.229

8.0.6362.239

8.0.6362.249

8.0.6362.254

8.0.6362.259

What would be the best way to package an uninstall script to tackle this? I
don't want to have multiple MSI uninstall packages. Can someone provide some
insight on to a recommended approach?

Thanks,

Brian

8.0.6362.202

8.0.6362.215

8.0.6362.223

8.0.6362.229

8.0.6362.239

8.0.6362.249

8.0.6362.254

8.0.6362.259

What would be the best way to package an uninstall script to tackle this? I
don't want to have multiple MSI uninstall packages. Can someone provide some
insight on to a recommended approach?

Thanks,

Brian

Jason,

Would this still work for an app, such as Live Meeting where the registry
string is as follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Live Meeting

Would modifying your script to use HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE work?

Thanks,

Simple shell script solution (untested with this product, but works for other
products regularly)

wmic product where 'name like "%%Live Meeting%%"' call uninstall /nointeractive

note the single quotes around the logic phrase, and the double quotes around
the search string. Double % are used for the wildcards because if you do
single % it tries to find a variable by that name.

This also assumes only a single version would be installed at a time. Run
multiple times for multiple installs (if possible), or work out a FOR loop to
execute the command for each match found.

Another option (requiring a lot more research) is to find all the PIDS and do a
series of msiexec /x[PID] /qn commands.

I do not see an option to pause or stop a deployment. I would rather not have

No, I would not consider that query to be accurate. Its only querying hardware
inventory, which in most environments is kept around for 30+ days. This means
you still get inactive and obsolete clients. You need to tie the query to
v_r_system_valid if you want to see legitimate clients.

Garth,

I used RegKeyToMof to inventory the key found in the following link:

What I'm trying to do is inventory a list of workstations that have x86 and x64
versions of office 2013. Looking to get some help with the query.

Thanks,

For MS office versions, you can try report (Customize per needs)
http://eskonr.com/2015/01/sccm-configmgr-2012-ssrs-report-count-ms-office-versions/

SCCM Configmgr 2012 SSRS Report Count MS Office Versions
...<http://eskonr.com/2015/01/sccm-configmgr-2012-ssrs-report-count-ms-office-versions/>
eskonr.com
Recently , I worked on MS Office upgrade project to 2013 and before I take any
action on this,I need to identify /get count of all MS Office Versions

and for list of servers by domain ,you can use this SQL query ( it has lot
more) which is available in my dashboard report
http://eskonr.com/2014/05/sccm-configmgr-2012-ssrs-dashboard-client-health-summary-report/

...<http://eskonr.com/2014/05/sccm-configmgr-2012-ssrs-dashboard-client-health-summary-report/>
eskonr.com
Another Configmgr 2012 SSRS Report that brings Client Health Summary. This
time,it will be a dashboard instead normal SSRS report.Dashboard is nice way to

select case when sys.Resource_Domain_OR_Workgr0!=' ' then
sys.Resource_Domain_OR_Workgr0else NULL end as [Domain],
count(distinct sys.ResourceID) [Total Clients],
count(case when sys.client0=1 then '*' end) as 'Client Installed',

[mssms] Reporting Issue

2016-07-13 Thread Brian McDonald
Hello,

I have some users reporting issues accessing reports. We have created a
Reporting User Only role and have assigned a Reporting User AD group
permissions to this security role in SCCM. Users are unable to access reports
via ConfigMgr admin console installed locally on their machines. The error is
"The DefaultValue expression for the report parameter 'UserTokenSIDs' contains
and error. The username or password is incorrect." The temp work around has
been to modify the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\SMSRP\EnableRBACReporting from 1
to 0. However, the setting will revert back to 0 after some time.

SQL Reporting Services is using the NT Service\ReportServer account. I came
across the following and wonder if we need to switch to a domain account?

[mssms] Odd behavior with patch compliance and report data

2016-07-06 Thread Brian McDonald
Hey all,

I ran into something I have never seen yesterday. I pulled a Status States
Compliance Report yesterday on a Software Update Deployment and majority of the
machines were in ESU status. This pretty much should have been the case since
there was an issue with the deployment, I believe. However, towards the end of
the day, I ran the same report and it was showing most of the clients were now
compliant. I thought this was odd since most of the machines, I know for a
fact, did not receive the deployment package. I checked it again in the
evening, and it was once again showing the clients in ESU status.

Like I said, never seen this strange behavior before and it had me slightly
concerned. Anyone ever experience this?

[mssms] All SW Query Help

Hello all,

I'm trying to gather a report of all Software in Add or Remove Programs from
SCCM. I need to identify which servers or workstations have the software
installed. I understand this is going to generate numerous rows per computer,
but this is what has been asked by management. Note, we are closer to
purchasing 3rd party software to assist with the normalization of this data.
But, for now, I have to work with what I have.

Here is the baseline query I am using:

Declare @CollID char(8)
Set @CollID = 'SMS1'
SELECT DisplayName0, Count(*) AS 'Count', Publisher0, Version0, @CollID as
CollectionID
FROM v_Add_Remove_Programs arp
JOIN v_FullCollectionMembership fcm on arp.ResourceID=fcm.ResourceID
WHERE fcm.CollectionID = @CollID
GROUP BY DisplayName0, Publisher0, Version0

Can someone please tell me how I can modify the above query to include the
servers or workstations that have the software installed?

Thanks,

Sorry, that was a typo. I entered the command as you have indicated below.

ADSI Edit shows the same exact output as provided with the ldife query for

However, the service account is blank with the servicePrincipalName
attribute. Is there a way to fix this via ADSIEdit? Still not sure why this
 would say ‘Duplicate SPN found…”

 Setspn -a MSSQLSvc\Server:1433 Domain\cmsql

 Setspn -a MSSQLSvc\Server.fqdn:1433 Domain\cmsql

When running the above commands I receive: Duplicate SPN found, aborting
operation! I noticed though it shows checking domain...and it has the cmra
account, which is my reporting services account.

When I attempt to run setspn -l domain\cmsql it doesn't show anything when it
 searches.

If I run setspn -x it tells me found 0 group of duplicate SPNs.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be the issue here?

I'm trying to implement a new management point and it's telling me that the
 SPNs have not been registered.

 Thanks!

Regarding Brian’s original question, the article is saying the SEP Network
Threat Protection feature was not enabled. It looks like the organization
wasn’t using SEP’s Firewall, which means you can’t use SEP’s NTP either.

For SCEP, see the Network Inspection System as a similar feature. I’ve found
SCEP’s NIS to be very effective while also not giving the cumbersome number
of false positives seen in SEP.

This article talks about how they extended behavior and network monitoring
with better real-time network inspection for zero-day exploits:

[mssms] Apply OS image step fails

Hey all,

Scratching my head on this one. I have an MDT/SCCM integrated TS in an SCCM
2012 R2 CU2 environment. In both New and Refresh deployment scenarios the TS
fails during the Apply OS step with the following error:

Error in the Task Sequence. The system cannot find the file specified. Error:
80070002; Source Windows

I have attempted multiple .WIM files as well as an OS installer package.
Boundaries seem fine, NAA account seems to be working to. I can run the MDT
Toolkit Files and Gather steps in WinPE, but when it attempts to apply the OS
it fails. Been testing all day long with no success so thought I would try here.
Thanks,

[mssms] Security Updates not showing up in Software Center

2014-08-12 Thread Brian McDonald
Looking for ideas.

I have a Windows 7 client that I'm trying to deploy updates to. The client
hasn't been patched since May. For some reason I cannot get updates that are
made available to show up in Software Center. I have reviewed the
PolicyEvaluator.log file and cannot find the corresponding Deployment ID, so
I'm thinking the client isn't getting policies. However, if I deploy an
application/package to the machine, It will show up in software center.

WUAHandler.log file indicates the following, Received SuccededWithErrors
code from WUA during search. Check WindowsUpdate.log in Windows Directory. I
don't see any errors in the WindowsUpdate.log file.

BTW - this is the first time I've worked on getting updates implemented in my
environment. Looking for some ideas on what I can investigate to look into this
further.

Thanks,

Brian

hasn't been patched since May.

Looking for some ideas on what I can investigate to look into this
further.

Thanks,

Brian

Was the deployment done manually or with an automatic deployment rule? Either
way, I believe that you can sepcify how the deployment interacts with software
center. I am not in an environment today that has a SUP or I would check and
confirm the exact options. . .

Rightclick computer object in console, properties and verify you see the
security patches showing at the deployment tab…

 Hey all,

I'm in the process of researching WoL setup in SCCM 2012. Appears to be
fairly straight forward. I'm looking for a good guide to fully understand all
the components and network infrastructure related dependencies to make this
 happen.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

 Thanks!
