Here's my (opinionated) take on it. If you have a budget to go to a conference
in the US, and you are an engineer/technician; you'll get more out of
MMSMOA.com . It's more about getting things done, as well as showing some new
stuff. There's also another more technically minded conference, called ITDev
Connections. I prefer mmsmoa; but that's just me.

Go to Ignite if...
1) You are a manager that doesn't really watch what's going on in technology,
and you need the 10,000 foot view of what's current and upcoming; with almost
no technical details on how to actually get there.
2) You are a tech... but whomever it is that holds the budget for going to a
conference can only wrap their head around "so, you want to go to a tech
conference, you must mean Ignite, and only Ignite, and anything else is just
not possible". i.e., you have no other choice. It's at least better than
nothing; and if you are diligent about monitoring every possible social media,
you can hunt down other techs and have some meaningful conversations.
3) you have budget for 3 conferences: then go to all 3!

RE: [mssms] Microsoft Ignite is it worth it?

2016-11-25 Thread Michael Niehaus
My simplified take:

· If you want to learn about the latest technologies and what you’re
going to be doing in the coming years, go to Ignite. (Typically this would be
IT architects, project managers, technical leaders, consultants, partners, etc.)

o 80% or more of the Ignite sessions are level 300 or 400; the “manager who
doesn’t really watch what’s going on in technology” would likely be lost if
they venture past the keynotes and 200-level overview sessions.

o You can’t beat the *breadth* of the sessions – with hundreds of sessions to
choose from on every possible Microsoft technology, pick out some things that
you don’t know.

· If you want to learn about how to do your current job better, using
current technologies, go to MMSMOA or similar conferences. (Typically this
would be IT pros, IT administrators, etc.)

o You’ll see very few overview sessions – with the focus on people who are
doing jobs that leverage specific technologies, no one there needs an overview ☺

o You can’t beat the *depth* of the sessions – I’m always surprised that even
the most esoteric topics (which seem to be the ones I end up presenting ☺) have
strong interest.

Just be careful: If you focus only on what you’re doing today, you may find
yourself unprepared for the jobs that you will be expected to find in the
future. Stretch your boundaries ☺

Thanks,
-Michael

Others have pointed out many excellent ConfigMgr sessions. One session update
not reflected in the catalog may be of interest to some.

Deepak Kumar’s presentation<https://myignite.microsoft.com/sessions/19287>
(session 19287) has been changed from the original title/description. It is
actually now about Windows 10 deployment from the cloud, and will include the
new ConfigMgr in the cloud technology. We are working with MS to update the
session listing online, but it’s not clear that will happen in time for session
selection, so I’m letting those know who are interested in this Azure/cloud
technology. This is a partner session (Adaptiva is a platinum sponsor at the
event).

Cheers,

Close, to me, is 3 miles or less. I stayed outside of downtown last year, and
ran both ways back and forth. I'd pass Ed waiting for his bus every morning,
cussing the wind.

To me, 1.6 miles isn't that far and a bus trip shouldn't be that bad.

Of course, this might add some fodder to your thought process when deciding to

Most Chicago hotels, particularly the ones selected by Microsoft, are pretty

something this large is going to be a nightmare. If you thought Houston was

You could try to give yourself options and stay near the two Metra Electric
lines that end in Grant Part and Millennium Park. Metra would be a quick trip
to McCormick as opposed to waiting on a bus. The Hilton Chicago and some of
the hotels North of that would only leave you with a 1-2 block walk to the
train. You won't want to count on cabs for that trip during rush hour.

Most Chicago hotels, particularly the ones selected by Microsoft, are pretty
good. You can’t go wrong with any of them. However, transportation for
something this large is going to be a nightmare.
If you thought Houston was tough, Chicago is going to be even more
challenging. Get something close to the conference center unless you’re like me
and like to stay within running distance.

Close, to me, is 3 miles or less. I stayed outside of downtown last year,
and ran both ways back and forth. I'd pass Ed waiting for his bus every
morning, cussing the wind.

To me, 1.6 miles isn't that far and a bus trip shouldn't be that bad.

Of course, this might add some fodder to your thought process when deciding
to walk (or run).

Are far as I can tell the only hotel on the conference hotel list that is
close is the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place and it is sold out. That's why I
am asking for recommendations from the rest. The closest available hotel on
the list is, I think, the Hilton Chicago. It's 1.6 miles from McCormick
Place.

You can use the MS Ignite forum for this.
http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/MicrosoftIgnite

Basically, you will want to stay in the loop area south of the river
which cuts Michigan Ave. This will avoid your bus delays from trying to
cross the bridge during rush hour. Transportation to McCormick may be
easier than one expects because there is a dedicated road only for buses
and taxis (called McCormick Place Busway) directly to McCormick which
starts from the top of Millennium Park. There is also the Metra train
that goes directly inside the convention center. You will also want to
stay in the loop area because there is absolutely nothing by the
convention center.

The core of the hotels are going to be about that distance plus some to
McCormick Place. They'll have to run busses and\or embrace public
transportation.

The trains in Chicago are very good too (although not always the most
attractive :)), so don't be too afraid to stay somewhere along a convenient
route.
