Re: [mssms] Windows Defender- Advanced Threat Protection -Any comments on this product
I joined the preview program for ATP when it was first announced, and have continued through various preview/testing phases since then. It's a great product, and getting better all the time. I love that the client side components of it are built into windows 10, so every time a new Win10 build comes out, new features and capabilities are added to ATP. Now, with that said, you'll notice that I said I've continued with the preview program, and not that I've purchased the product. There are a few good reasons for that - 1) Windows Defender ATP only works on Windows 10. 2) When I say ONLY Windows 10, I mean it. As in, not supported on Windows Server, even Server 2016 3) ATP isn't available to purchase as a standalone product, only as part of the Windows 10 Enterprise E5 license 4) The Windows 10 Enterprise E5 license isn't available under OPEN licensing agreements 5) We're a non-profit, and have some kind of charity version of an OPEN license agreement in order to get charity pricing. 6) Add up #'s 3, 4, and 5, and it boils down to - We can't buy it. I think MS is going to shut down the test program accounts in the next month or two, and we'll deprovision ATP on our machines. The alternative product that we've been considering and will probably end up buying soon is CarbonBlack's CB Defense product. I don't like CB Defense as much as ATP, and CB Defense has a few things that leave me feeling like I wouldn't want it to completely replace my traditional antivirus product, but it's what's available to us right now.
