disabled at VDP level (using IE0 or IE1, depending on the type of

At 01:00 PM 8/20/99 +0200, you wrote:

By the way, how did you solve the joystickport timing-problem???
Joystick and JoyNet would be glad to use the full speed of the Z380.
However, the Z380 is too fast for the mouse when a program is not using
BIOS-routines... A lot of programs won't use the BIOS for mouse-readout
though... So the mouse will then just not work??? Or could there be some
(software-)switch (change a bit somewhere in the MSX-Engine) to slow down
the joystickport I/O access?

Please don't slow down joystick port I/O access on account of JoyNet!

If you use a delay insensitive protocol, a faster CPU will speed up
transfer rates. Only a protocol that depends on timing will suffer.

Why is a protocol that depends on timing a bad thing?
1. You need to make different versions for 3.5MHz, 7MHz, turbo R and Z380.
2. The cable length matters (longer cables are slower).
3. Programs running on non-MSX computers (especially multitasking
environments) will be very difficult to write.

By the way, I think I have solved the lack of error detection in my
protocol. When I have more time, I will implement the improved protocol and
do some serious testing.

Re: Emulation problems with status register#1

1999-08-21 Thread Laurens Holst

This still doesn't answer the question whether interrupt cancelling is
 possible.

 Scenario:
 1. DI
 2. enable interrupts at VDP level
 3. wait for some time, long enough for an interrupt to occur
 4. disable interrupts at VDP level
 5. EI
 6. test: does an interrupt occur?

The interrupt does not occur.
The VDP simply copies the value of the FH bit to the interrupt-pin of the
slot.
This pin remains set (and thus generating an interrupt, unless they are
disabled using DI) until the corresponding statusregister is read.

Since both are different statusregisters, they can overlap eachother.

the BIOS for its mouseroutines (okay all Basic-programs use the BIOS too).

But mouseroutines are just to speed-sensitive to use the BIOS for... If the
BIOS would have bene programmed better... That would be a different story.

No. In some situations you need to wait a long time (imagine the wait of
2 NOPs on a 7Mhz cpu or on TR). We ALWAYS want speed but 100%

No. On EVERY 7MHz board the processor switches back to 3.5MHz when accessing
the VDP. SO that's compatible.

You forgot that NOP is not an VDP Acess, so it will happen at 7Mhz in the time of 1
NOP
at 3.57Mhz.

On the turboR, an auto-delay is inserted by
the MSX Engine. So there even two OUT-instructions behind eachother works!!!
The processor will automatically wait the nessacary time.

Nah, correct SOFTWARE problems using hardware is BAD.

So inserting two EX (SP),HLs is just a big, unnessacary waste of time, as
well on 3.5MHz, 7MHz and turboR MSX computers.

Ok. This type of programing give us A LOT of trouble correcting programs
and trying to find out 'why it's not working while all other programs work well?'

   FAST almost always means incompatible.
What should I use the BIOS for?

Acess VDP, there is problems and diferences of timing when using VDP1 or
VDP2 or VDP3, use the mouse. Use OPL driver to Acess FM (acessing it
directly causes almost all games have a BAD sound under 7Mhz), use
BDOS to acess disk (or you'll have problems with port based or memory
based interfaces (it will depends on how have you done the direct acess).

The only incompatible thing for which I
should actually use the BIOS is the mouse... but reading the mouse is a
really speed-sensitive thing (readout is done every interrupt)... So I don't
use that BIOS-routine.

Hehehe... Ok. That will be your problem if the program work only in your
hardware.
If you NOT use BIOS, you are NOT programming for MSX standard. You
are programming for a computer using, Z80, V99xx, PSG, YM2413, etc,etc,etc.,
on the same ports/addresses than a MSX.
Why? Because the standart says to use the BIOS... Even if it is slow. And
if someone do a NEW MSX and DO NOT reprogram the BIOS, than it will
not be a good MSX. There is the need of a new BIOS. And you'll see something
about it in the future.

About other things... I only use the (Disk-)BIOS for disk I/O. The BIOS is
really useless, the most needed BIOS function is not even available (only in
MSXDOS2)... Can you guess what I'm talking about? Right! Memorymapper
management routines!!!

(-: This is right... But this is THE ONLY thing I do not want to use, because the
DOS2 memory management is really weird.

If they had included these... That would be another story.

  Why not WE include?

Please name some other thing which could be incompatible when not using the
BIOS...
- Mouse? Indeed a problem because of timing, but the BIOS routines are way
too slow (I can program it at least 6 times faster). Aargh!

Yeah, but it will work everywhere? If it's 60 times faster but runs only on my
system, it's useless.

- VDP? Timing is indeed quite strict, however the speed is much too
nessacary to keep account with that. Therefor the faster MSX computers have
adaptions to slow down VDP access.

Hehehe... Yes, a lot of waitstates... This is weird.

- Disk? Is definately incompatible using direct I/O. Is too difficult to
program though so everybody uses the (Disk-)BIOS anyways.

(-: This is the worst point of direct acess!

Strange MSX Turbo R

1999-08-21 Thread Ivan Latorre

Hello all

I have seen a strange FS-A1GT MSX Turbo R in this page:

http://stu.sv.cc.yamaguchi-u.ac.jp/~x036fe/msxroom.html

The keys of the keyboard are black and the black plastic band
that is situated above the function keys (were A1 GT is printed)
is wider than in a normal FS-A1 GT. In fact it is the plastic band
of a FS-A1 ST.

Maybe its owner made some modifications in his/her computer:
-Put the keyboard of a FS-A1 WX / WSX.
-Put the black plastic label of a FS-A1 ST.
-Left the rest of the FS-A1 GT parts.

I think that we can call Mulder and Scully or put the pic in the
MSX hardware list ...

Re: Strange MSX Turbo R

1999-08-21 Thread Patriek Lesparre

I have seen a strange FS-A1GT MSX Turbo R in this page:
*cut*
Maybe its owner made some modifications in his/her computer:
-Put the keyboard of a FS-A1 WX / WSX.
-Put the black plastic label of a FS-A1 ST.
-Left the rest of the FS-A1 GT parts.

In fact, on the page it says the keyboard is of a FS-A1WX. Also it says the
R800 has been overclocked to 36 MHz!

Also, although I'm not very sure because I can't fully read Japanese, it
seems to be expanded to 1 Mega (Megabit or megabyte?) SRAM and 1536kB Main
RAM.

There's a picture of some sort of Yamaha OPL3 board as well!

Obviously this guy is some kind of hardware dude :)

Re: Nonvolatile RAM-DISKs

1999-08-21 Thread Giovanni R. Nunes

  MkII,

Apart from the ESE-RAM, are out there any other solid state devices
with nonvolatile SRAM (not flash ROM) that can be used as a bootable
 RAM-DISK?

  From ESE: ESE-RAM, SCC-RAM, Mega-SCSI and SCC-SCSI. Once more?
From Others: I don't know. Italians SCC-RAM has battery?

Typing tokenized in PC...

1999-08-21 Thread Giovanni R. Nunes

  People,

TYPE /B autoexec.bas|msxlist should work!
In Win95, TYPE doesn't accept the "/B" switch. COPY and FC do...

Hmmm... Sometimes ago I found a MSX-DOS emulator to DOS (like CP/M
emulators) and it can be used with "list.com" (from MSX-DOS Tools from
  ASCII). Whithout problems using:

  msx list xpto.bas | more

in DOS2 I'm using "list xpto.bas | nv" for look my BASIC programs.
