Re: Bussum

1999-09-23 Thread Laurens Holst

 Mk2's back home.

Just woke up from a long sleep after the Bussum marathon :]

Why sleeping for so long? The Marathon was not that lengthy btw 8;)

Pfff... I thought it was long enough :)
Well anyways I went to bed 1:00 PM, slept until 9:00 PM, woke up again to
eat something and after that slept until the next morning (I had to go to
school :( )

But the Marathon... I really thought it was "heavy".

A short impression: The fair itself was great, tho not very many
stands (20?) and not very many visitors (150?).

Were really 150 *MSX* visitors there? I saw quite a bunch of eldermen,
girls, "satellites" and "unusual" people I doubt they had the slightest
 relation to MSX (!).

Hmmm... Dunno. Fact is that according to our count the nr. of visitors was
errm... 130 a 140 I think. Excluding 'standkeepers' ofcourse.

And as a matter of fact a lot of "eldermen", like you call them, have an MSX
and definately were there for MSX. Only ones who might not have really
'belonged' at the fair (read: were no MSXers) were probably relatives of
MSX-people.

 - I saw Maddonna MkII finishing a small demo in the Marathon, based on
the
Overscan Scroll we saw earlier from MkII

Thanks for your interest, Manuel. I actually started and finished the demo
at the Marathon -just picked the disk loading routines from the game
sources still on the ESE-RAM-, even though I fell asleep twice in front of
Devpac (due to boredom, I was not that sleepy!).

Yeah I think you must have been a little bored... The speech of Rieks was
almost entirely Dutch (well he translated the first part), and there were no
'real' contests... Really have to organize it much better next time.

The marathon contestants were placed in the bigger room

Gee... did any contest actually take place? Hey, I didn't notice (perhaps
I
 was sleeping too deep!) 8;)

Well there was 1. a music-contest (small one) between Tristan and Pepijn.
2nd, there was a programming contest but erm... it didn't really get
finished... We were too busy with other things I think.

p.s. I really hate the guys who turned on the bright green light that
was shining directly in my face :|

*sigh* I think you should blame TeddyWareZ for that...
Anyways you (Tristan) could have asked me to do something about it if it
really annoyed you... Only thing I had to was turn away the light and you
would have been out of trouble.

Oh, and by the way, Jori! Die gast (weet niet precies wie hij was) zal wel
een beetje te zieken zeg... ook met die harde muziek enzo... Beetje mwa.

Rieks told a short story about his stay in Japan which was very
entertaining

So where are the Japan news/impressions btw?

Well they were at the Marathon... don't think Rieks wrote them down.
The entire 'speech' of Rieks was very, very long... :) took 1 hour (2???).

p.p.s. There were about 5 people with digital cameras. Where are all
the pictures? Can you give us an URL?

I'll upload mine (only a few) to FUNET in a short time...

Oh, and by the way, did anyone of you meet "aapje"???
Expected him to come... (NOT)

Re: ez80

1999-09-23 Thread Jacco Bot

Detailed description from the ZIlog pdf file.. the 16MB part is quite
interesting...

Z80 High-Performance Microprocessor Core. The eZ80 is one of the fastest
8-bit CPUs available today, executing code 4 times faster than a standard
Z80 operating at the same clock speed. The increased processing efficiency
can be used to improve available bandwidth or to decrease power consumption.
Both the increased clock speed and processor efficiency features provides
eZ80 customers 16 times the processing performance. This processing power
rivals performance customers would normally expect from 16-bit
microprocessors.

16 MB Linear Address. The eZ80 is also the first 8-bit microprocessor to
support 16 MB linear addressing—a feature that addresses large memories that
support complex software applications.
Each software module, or each task under a real-time executive or operating
system, can operate in Z80-compatible (64 KB) mode, Z80180-compatible mode
(1 MB MMU) mode, or full 24-bit (16 MB) address mode.

Internet-Ready. A complete TCP/IP stack is also offered so customers can
design products that connect to the Internet.
Multiply and Accumulate. A Multiply and Accumulate engine operates in
parallel with the eZ80 processor to calculate a sum of products that is the
core of digital signal processing. The MAC provides 16x16 multiply and
40-bit accumulation.

ZDI. The ZiLOG Debug Interface is a 2-pin communication port. When used with
the ZiLOG Develop Suite (ZDS) software, ZDI provides on-chip emulation.

"Boon, Eric" ha escrit:

According to Zilog, the specifications are still under construction,
and they specifically warn that product deliverability may be a problem.
Not quite the recommendations for starting the zilion-and-first
  MSX-3 project...

If eZ80 is fully compatible with Z80, perhaps will be possible replace
Z80 with eZ80 in existing MSX...

Re: R800 and Z80 DRAM modes

1999-09-23 Thread Alex Wulms

] I was just wondering... If pause is pressed during disk access in Z80 mode,
] problems could arise. What happens?
] - disk I/O is always done in R800 mode (not true, as far as I know)
DOS2 always switches back to Z80 before calling any diskroutines. R800 is too
fast and can mess-up timing, for example the wait time after issue-ing a head
move command.

] - the pause key is disabled using some yet unknown mechanism
Nop. Pause key stays enabled.

] - pressing pause messes things up, but the disk I/O routine can recover
Nop. Pressing pause indeed messes things up, but the disk I/O routine can NOT
recover. So in the end you will get an error message like 'Disk I/O error'
under BASIC. Or 'Error reading disk, Abort, Retry or Ignore' under DOS.

] - something else?
See above.

Kind regards,
Alex Wulms
