Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position in the 
field of machine translation (MT), in the context of the MODERN project 
(www.idiap.ch/project/modern) funded by the Swiss National Science 
Foundation. The MODERN project is headed by Idiap, with partners in 
Zurich, Geneva and Utrecht, and its overall goal is to model discourse 
entities and relations for improving MT.


The position is offered for one year, with renewal for a second year 
conditioned on satisfactory results.  The appointment should start in

The researcher will focus on enhancing the use of text-level features in 
a statistical MT framework. Several features are available from our 
previous projects, for instance pertaining to discourse relations or 
verb tenses, but also based on robust semantic relatedness measures. In 
addition, work in MODERN will focus on discourse entities (coreference 
and anaphora resolution) which will offer additional text-level 
constraints to experiment with. We are expecting from the postdoctoral 
researcher to advance the state-of-the-art in MT with linguistically 
motivated features, demonstrating improvement over existing options 
(such as factored models) through quantitative evaluation.


Candidates should hold a PhD degree in statistical machine translation 
or natural language processing, and demonstrate a strong publication 
record at the time of application. Strong skills in programming and 
statistical modeling are also expected, along with a sensitivity to MT 
evaluation issues. While English is the main working language, knowledge 
of French, German or Dutch (the languages targeted in MODERN) would be 
an advantage. The PhD degree must be obtained before the starting date 
of the position.

Hi all,
Thanks a lot for your comprehensive answers.
An additional complication is that we need to combine the reordering
component with tag handling (e.g.

clear at this stage if it is possible at all, but  we are working on it.

SCOPE

Machine translation has been researched and developed for 60 years and 
has seen considerable improvements in the course of the last decade due 
to a focus on SMT (statistical machine translation). This trajectory, 
however, has its own inherent difficulties, e.g. a lack of integrating 
linguistic theory into the algorithms used. This workshop, accompanying 
one of the largest conferences on translation in the world, TRANSLATA II 
(www.translata.info), focuses on the state of the art and future 
developments in the field of machine translation, and on the 
relationship between machine translation and human translation. Another 
focus of the workshop is computer-aided translation (CAT) and the 
relationship between information technology and man in terms of 
translation and interpreting.


KEY TOPICS

- human-aided machine translation
- machine-aided human translation/computer-aided translation (also with 
- regard to literary and multi-media texts)

- pre-editing (of machine translated text)
- post-editing (of machine translated text)
- machine learning based on human input

WORKSHOP COMPONENTS

- Opening presentations by hosting university
- Presentations by scientific contributors
- Presentations by technology providers
- Tool demonstrations (open session)
- Synthesis and discussion of results

PARTICIPATION

Participation is open to:

- scientific contributors presenting research on the listed topics,
- technology providers presenting relevant tools and technologies,
- general participants interested in attending the workshop.

Acceptance of your submitted contribution entails automatic registration 
for the TRANSLATA II conference and conference fees apply. The number of 
participants is limited to 60.


SUBMISSION CATEGORIES

- Short Papers (up to 3 pages). A short paper cogently addressing the 
topics listed. Papers may, e.g., define current challenges, propose a 
solution, or report on research underway to advance efforts toward 
synergies between human and machine translation.


- Talks and demonstrations by technology providers. Abstracts (200 words 
max.) are to summarise technologies, tools, or application scenarios 
relevant to machine and computer-aided translation, especially with 
regard to their interaction with human translation. Tools and 
technologies are free to be demonstrated at your dedicated demo stand 
during the workshop exhibition period and during the whole conference.


- Discussion input. Position statements (250 words max.) defining a 
specific challenge, need, or desideratum that can be discussed following 
each session. Position statement authors will be expected to facilitate 
a discussion on their stated issue and report discussion results during 
the workshop synthesis session. These reports may be published at a 
later time in the proceedings.


Proposals for all categories should be sent to 
it-works...@translata.info by 30th June 2014. Notification of paper 
acceptance will be sent by 31st July 2014.


Publication in the Proceedings: Accepted short papers, papers belonging 
to the abstracts on tools and technologies, and written synthesis 
reports on the results of the workshop will be published in the 
conference proceedings.
