Re: MySQL 5.0 - What is really available?

2004-03-30 Thread Gerald Jensen
I would not recommend MySQL-Front ... the version they are selling is not
from the same developer that did MySQL-Front 2.5 (and earlier).

I bought a license (took a month to get a license key), complained about
missing features (OPTIMIZE and REPAIR MyISAM tables) and was basically told
I could shove it. They were rude and arrogant.

 You mention Windows XP.
Check out Mysql-Front (now commercial), version 3 may fit the bill.
not sure. but it was the best windows interface for mysql ever made,
notice, I said best for windows... ;)

mysqlCC rocks, but not sure about 5.0 support.

perhaps you could test it and report, and if its not working,
maybe you could even do a patch or two? :)

 Hello
I've installed Mysql 5 and have created a database. When I try and create
a stored procedure (using the example in the help) it fails.
The online help states that there should be a table called 'procs' in the
database for stored procedures to work. I can't see this table. The help
says this should have been created as part of the installation.

Any ideas as to why this is and what I can do?

 Thanks

Re: MySQL on Win32 vs Linux ?

Paul:

In my experience, MySQL on Win32 platforms is very stable. Of the 80+
customer systems we have running our applications in conjunction with MySQL,
the vast majority are on Win32.

The DB server needs to be properly tuned for the application and
environment, but that is the case with RDBMS you might sleect.

IMHO, any instability is not related to MySQL, but rather to the O/S
platform itself.

 All,

A little confused about what creates configuration (my.cnf) files. I'm
running MacOS X 10.2 (Jaguar) running MySQL 4.0.x. I was looking for the
global and server level configuration files in the following directories:

 Global - /etc/my.cnf
 Server - /mysql/data/my.cnf

I was unable to locate the files. Is this something I've got to create, or
is it generated during installation? If the files aren't generated during
installation, what does MySQL use when the .cnf files don't exist?

About the auto-start-up/shut-down on OS X:

OS X doesn't provide (as best I can find) a way through aqua (OS X's GUI)
to
automatically start and stop MySQL. However, OS X allows items to be
 kicked-off automatically at boot-up through the /Library/StartupItems/
directory. The book Managing Using MySQL from O'Reilly (ISBN:
 0-596-00211-4) has a page dedicated to the setup (page 69). I haven't
been
able to get this to work. I was able to download a binary that started
MySQL
server. The installer setup everything in the StartupItems folder. I got
the
stuff from www.entropy.ch (Marc Liyanage's site). With this, MySQL server
starts at boot, but I cannot get it to automatically shut down! So each
time
I shutdown I have to first remember to shutdown mysqld (that sucks). For
now, I'm just starting and stopping it manually (makes it easier to
remember
I have to shut it down). I'll keep at it though.

Re: mySQL on Windows 2000 Server

2003-03-28 Thread Gerald Jensen
Neil:

MySQL on Windows 2000 Server is excellent.

We have installed about client 80 systems that incorporate MySQL. Some are
running on Unix, some Linux, about a third on Windows NT Server, and the
balance (40+ systems) are running on either Windows 2000 Server or Win2K
Advanced Server.

We have never had a burp that was traceable to MySQL. If we encounter any
problems (which occurs seldom), it is almost always traceable to poor
network administration, lack of proper network security, or failure to
follow instructions.

Without trying to sound like a troll or a rant I'd like to chime in on the
 side of Jeremy.

I've worked with MySQL on sites that serve up over a million hits a day.
We
hit the 2gb file limit in Linux (NOT a MySQL problem) and moved to Solaris
 without incident.

A friend of mine had over a billion rows in a few of this tables
 (statistical data mostly).

As Jeremy points out all DB's have their problems, shortcomings, etc. If
you
have specific complaints fill out a feature request, if you've got
problems
fill out a bug report, but don't knock MySQL as
not-worthy-of-enterprise-status because it doesn't *work* like Oracle,
etc.

Overall, in my many experiences, it is more than sufficient for web apps.

Considering that the database is used to store billing

How does PHPEd stack up compared to other PHP IDE's? What experience (good

Any feed back (either to the list or me me privately) will be appreciated.

Gerald,
I tried PHPEd from NuSphere and it only partially worked. I spent
a lot of time trying to get it to work properly and failed. :( I tried 4
or 5 different PHP debuggers and I didn't like any of them. Not being one
to give up easily, I kept looking.

I found an excellent PHP debugger and editor from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dbg2/.

It took a little while getting it installed because there are no
docs, but I've been using it for a month and couldn't be happier. The
author Dmitri has borrowed a lot of ideas from the Delphi IDE so using it
is quite intuitive. I use it as my main PHP editor. It is also faster than
any other PHP debugger I've tried (there are no annoying delays or screen
flashes when single stepping through the PHP code) and it can also debug
into Include files which other debuggers may not be able to do. It can also
display Local, Global, Call Stack, Watch, Immediate, Breakpoint windows at
the bottom of the screen. It can also display arrays and all class object
properties which is very cool.

All in all, it's a great PHP editor/debugger. There are versions
for Windows (which is what I'm using), BSD and Linux. You also get the
source code for it and you'll definitely like the price. It's free. :-)

Brent

If you have a problem setting it up, shoot me off an email and I'll see
what I can do.

Error 1058 Win2K Server with MySQL

2002-02-19 Thread Gerald Jensen

We are trying to install MySQL on a Windows 2000 Server, but are getting
'error 1058' when we try to start the service.

The MySQL version is 3.23.47-nt. The MySQL drive is F:, and c:\my.cnf is:

skip-locking
set-variable = key_buffer=16M
set-variable = max_allowed_packet=1M
set-variable = thread_stack=128K
set-variable = flush_time=1800

client_file= F:\MYSQL\MYSQL.options
history_length=20
database = Wires
queries_root= F:\MYSQL\queries
last_database_file= F:\MYSQL\lastdb

This system is to use MyISAM tables.

From a DOS prompt, we switched into the F:\MYSQL\BIN directory and...
mysqld-nt --install
Win2K reports the service installed.

When we ...
net start mysql
we get the following error:

System error 1058 has occurred.
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

Anyone had this problem ... found a fix ... have any idea what is wrong???

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Problem is solved ... customer had his server configured so any new services

We have installed MySQL on about a dozen Win2K Advanced servers ... this is
the first time we have encountered this issue.

Thank you to those who responded!

Re: M$ SQL Export to Mysql Help

Curtis ...

Do you have the database/table created on the MySQL server? If so, you can
use MSAccess (need ODBC connections to both servers) to Link Tables and move
the data acros that way.

We did it that way until our programmers wrote a C++ app that replicates
server-to-server.

I have a nicely sized database of about 40 records, which I have in
MS SQL but I need to move it to my production server, which is Mysql. I
was going to do it this way:

Export MS SQL database into a file and then use LOAD DATA INFILE

But I was wondering if there were a way to export into SQL and then just
use \. Database.sql to import it very quickly. I am worried that the
exporter will mess up the file because it is so large.

RE: Use of the MySQL logo - licensing agreement

Ed:

I would hope that someone from MySQL AB will address this. It is
particularly important to those of us who purchased blocks of licenses under
TcX's OEM arrangement.

We have an OEM agreement for another software product with a Canadian
company. The written agreement is very simple, but grants us specific rights
to use their logo and trademark. Compliance is easy, and we don't have to
check with anybody.

The first page of the MySQL tutorial at:
 http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/o/Connecting-disconnecting.html

says that when you connect to the MySQL server, it authenticates you based
on a username and password that you enter, unless the server is also
configured to allow anonymous access, in which case you can log in with
 no username.

Isn't it also true that if you connect to the MySQL server on your local
machine, the server authenticates you based on the username that you're
 already logged in under?

I'm just trying out the MySQL server on my machine, and when I'm logged to
the machine as bhaselto and I invoke mysql (with no username or password
on the command line), I get the mysql prompt, however I am not able to
create new databases. However, if I quit mysql, then su to become root,
and then invoke mysql again with no username/password arguments, when I
get
the mysql prompt I am able to create new databases.

(If this is right, then should I send an update suggestion to the author
of
 the http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/o/Connecting-disconnecting.html page? Is
he
 or she on the list?)

Re: MySql and PHP

Matt:

MySQL and PHP are both 'server-side' components, so there is no need to
instal them locally (unless, of course, you want to do your development and
testing off-line).

If you are doing any significant level of PHP work, I would suggest
installing a local version of both MySQL and PHP. I have local versions
installed on both WinNT and Linux machines on the network ... everything
gets tested on both platforms before it goes live.

[ snip, snip ===]

Do not jump to the conclusion that I am starting out to be an apologist

Never ascribe malice to that which can be attributed to ignorance.
I am not sure if this type of emotional leap is proper until a
bit more information comes out and some of the heat dies down.

There are always two sides to every situation.

There are two issues, the domain mysql.org, and the other, more
difficult to understand, the aspect of GPL violation.

The domain/trademark issue will get settled by legal means and
there is enough of a corpus of law precedent that a settlement
and/or judgement will occur. I personally do not see such a great
importance of mysql.org in this matter. Obviously, many of you

Now most of us in/using Open Source probably do not _really_
understand the meaning and ramifications of the GPL. We _think_
we know, and we certainly have a feeling about what the GPL
means. Ironically, Richard Stallman's take is, in a legal sense,
crystal clear compared with the GPL. NuSphere indicated that
is was going to put their products under the GPL. They have
indicated that Gemini will be GPL's. Are they to be punished
for being late in doing so? NuSphere supports Open Source
and is public on this position.

The irony of this situation is that it _may_ be to the advantage
of the Open Source community if NuSphere is not knee-jerked
pilloried, and tarred and feathered out of the minds of the
Open Source community. It is complete speculation upon my
part that ultimately, MySQL will be replaced in all those
embedded applications where Progress now sits. Though it
may change in the near future, commercial developers needing
an embedded database usually prefer a solution like Progress
because of the Company-behind-it, rather than have MySQL.
MySQL may/would gain credibility if Progress is replaced.

Now, I hope this is all settled to everybody's benefit.
It may not be possible because of emotion. But I know that
I would personally like to see MySQL start to creep into
large manufacturing management systems and other systems
where Progress now has a significant hold. Then, and only
then, will the community be able to easily tap into MySQL and
offer better intranets, tools, and other solutions.

So, I am suggesting to everyone to just wait and see. It
might not be as bad as it seems...

try to connect it says 'ipaddress.internetprovider' is not allowed to
connect to this MySQL server. How can I use the GRANT/REVOKE command
through mysql to grant myself access to it?

Re: I need to convert an ms access database file to a mysql compatible pipe delimited database file

2001-06-06 Thread Gerald Jensen

Can you can connect to MySQL with PHPMyAdmin or DBTools? What application
are you trying to use when you get the failure-to-connect message? Is the
server physically located in your place, or out on the net?

If you don't have administrative access (telnet, PHPAdmin, MySQLFront,
etc.), you have no way to use the GRANT command to do anything with
privileges.

If your MySQL server is out on the web, someone (ISP?) with admin rights
needs to lend a hand.

Subject: I need to convert an ms access database file to a mysql compatible
pipe delimited database file

Thanks, but I already have a program good enough called phpmyadmin and I
need to use another program called dbtools. dbtools can connect to the
mysql server and convert ms access files to pipe delimited text files. I
just need to grant a user (myself) permission somehow to access the server.
When I try to setup a connection to the mysql server it says
'myipaddress.myinternetprovider' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL
server. How can I use the GRANT/REVOKE command or something else through
mysql/putty to grant myself access to it? Any help is appreciated, thanks
again

Subject: inserting a colum into a existing table

 Hello

I am writing a programm in java that is checking my mysql db if
everything is correct, so that I can you that db later in my java
programm to write datas into it!

I am fresh to mysql, but I got everything so fare, that the prog is
able to make a no root user with the appr. rights, creates, drops
db, creates tables, drops tables but i need one more thing!

How can i add to an existing table - called t1 - in the database db1
 some more columes?

I just need the mysql syntax like it will be entered :

 local:~ # mysql -u root -p
 Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 1617 to server version: 3.22.32

 Type 'help' for help.

 mysql use db1;
 Database changed
 mysql show tables;
 +---+
 | Tables in db1 |
 +---+
 | t1 |
 +---+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

 mysql select * from t1;
 +---++
 | id_t1 | t1_text|
 +---++
 | 1 | NULL |
 +---++
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Re: MYSQL on Windows 2k

2001-03-22 Thread Gerald Jensen

Daniel ...

Make sure the path to C:\MYSQL\BIN (or wherever it is installed) is in the
PATH environment variable (Settings - Control - System - Environment).
Login as Administrator and edit the value for the path variable, set and
apply ... your problems should be over!

I installed mysql as a service and it starts/stops fine, but whenever I try
any commands starting with 'mysql' on the prompt it says it's an
unrecognized command. Please help.

Re: windows 2000

2001-02-28 Thread Gerald Jensen

We run MySQL (3.22.32) on Windows 2000 servers, and have found that if we
issue the NET STOP MYSQL command from the DOS Prompt, it does in fact
shutdown the service ... it just takes much longer
than on the WinNT platform. Patience is the key. Same with removing the
installed service.

In every instalaltion we have done, error 1067 always occurs when we issue a
NET STOP MYSQL command

 Micke

Can't really speak for Professional but I have it running fine on Server
and
 Advanced Server.

If my memory is right then 1067 is normally that the service cannot
respond
to the control function effectively. Together with the fact that you
cannot
remove the service after uninstall, this suggests to me that the service
is
not being installed or initialised correctly on install of MySQL - not
sure
why, unless it is a Professional problem.

Try using mysql command line to see if it will connect - a problem with
BIND
on NT used to give this 1067 error BUT the service was actually started
and
running OK despite it. Go figure! :-)

You might try removing the following registry key to remove the service
 (then reboot, natch!):-

 HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MySQL

 See how that goes.

Re: Printed MySQL manual

2001-02-21 Thread Gerald Jensen

Denis:

I'm not sure you really want a printed MySQL manual ... the software is
dynamic, and is constantly being upgraded. The online manual is updated
frequently, and is closer to the software you may be using.

As an alternative, I would suggest one of the fine books on MySQL. Our
developers each have a copy of the Paul DuBois book ("MySQL" / New Riders)
as well as the O'Reilly book "MySQL mSQL". Both are excellent learning and
reference resources, and are invaluable in understanding and applying SQL
syntax.
