RE: Should We purchase mysql license Under Windows 2000??----Please Help!!!
MySql being under the GPL (as I just checked on the web site), I don't see why anything should be paid tu use it except if the owner asks for money which isn't the case. MySql proposes paying licenses but for people who don't want to be restricted by the GPL terms. So yes MySql can be used by anyone for free as long as they accept GPL terms (even by BigFatComp corporation that will get billions of profit from it :-) ). This implies that you won't hide mysql among proprietary code to resell the whole. On 11-Sep-01, michael johnson wrote: If you are using MySQL for commercial gain then you need a developer's license. No, MySQL is released under the GPL / LGPL. You only need the license if you're going to do something that would violate the license, such as linking the server part into non-GPL software. The Gnu Public License does not differentiate between commercial and non-commercial software, only between free and non-free. That the client part of mysql is released under the LGPL means that you're free to link it into proprietary software without a license. This does of course not mean that you can't buy a license if you want to, but if I were in a situation where I didn't need a license but felt like supporting MySQL AB, I'd buy support from them instead.
