Are you sure you did disable eXecutable bits on a nagios check command?

How do you expect it to run?

2006-06-07 Thread Marc Powell
111 doesn't appear to be a well known posix exit code (at least according to
google and my experience). What OS are you running nagios on?
Are these checks remotely run on Windows (via NRPE_NT for example)?
Is there any commonality between them that you can discern (all perl checks for
example)?
How about the state of the nagios machine when this is happening. Can you run
the commands manually as the nagios user at that time? Perhaps you'll see some
informative output to STDERR. Are there memory, CPU or I/O issues?

You may want to revisit writing your own, since there's a new
CPAN module FEAR::API for fearless programming of web clients.

>From http://www.perl.com/lpt/a/2006/06/01/fear-api.html

'
FEAR::API's documentation says:

FEAR::API is a tool that helps reduce your time creating site scraping
scripts and helps you do it in an much more elegant way. FEAR::API
combines many strong and powerful features from various CPAN modules,
such as LWP::UserAgent, WWW::Mechanize, Template::Extract, Encode,
HTML::Parser, etc., and digests them into a deeper Zen.

(Here's an example that

 Fetch CPAN's homepage.
 Extract data with a template.
 Process links using a control structure.
 Print fetched content to STDOUT.
 Dump links in the page.
 Use YAML to print extract results
)

It might be best to introduce FEAR::API by rewriting the previous
example:

   1use FEAR::API -base;
   2url("search.cpan.org");
   3fetch >> [
   4  qr(foo) => _feedback,
   5  qr(bar) => \my @link,
   6  qr()=> sub { 'do something here' }
   7];
   8fetch while has_more_links;
   9extmethod('Template::Extract');
  10extract($template);
  11print Dumper extresult;
  12print document->as_string;
  13print Dumper [EMAIL PROTECTED];
  14invoke_handler('YAML');
'

The article compares FEAR::API with the former standards WWW::Mechanize.

Even if you decide that FEAR::API, the standard Perl HTTP modules do

cookies
parse HTML - in partic, extract links
handle fill out forms

HTH,

Yours sincerely.

This is different than the 3 failing examples you give below --

> > [*]nagios_check_command=/usr/nagios/libexec/check_nagios
> > /var/nagios/status.log 5 '/usr/nagios/bin/nagios'

> > nagios_check_command=/usr/nagios/libexec/check_nagios
> > /var/nagios/status.log 5 `which nagios`

The 'nagios' at the end is the word(s) it is searching for in the
process list. I'll bet that when you 'ps aux' it shows up solely as
'nagios' and not any of the variations you've tried above. Modify the
command to be

nagios_check_command=/usr/nagios/libexec/check_nagios
/var/nagios/status.log 5 'nagios'

*note* the nagios check command runs as your web server user, not
nagios. That shouldn't be an issue but it may if you have a restrictive
web server configuration.

Disable this host check. Because any failed service will result in a host
check and if that host is down none of these services will be tested.

But just why you choose to make things this complex in the first place is
beyond me.

I suggest you do a tcpdump on a single SMTP session from Nagios to your
serve and see who is not behaving as expected.

Make sure you store it as file and use a tool as ethereal to decode the
file again.

Well, since it's Gentoo, what are your build flags for Nagios. Also,
what does the plugin return when you call it from the command line as
the user running nagios. Finally, can you give us an ls -l of your
status.log?

Hello everybody,

Dudes, i have configured a nagios server in a gentoo box, according to

working correctly[2] except the important fact that the command
declared in cgi.cfg for the parameter nagios_check_command[3] is

I've tried several different ways[*] for the nagios_check_command but
i still get the same result, the permissions for that file are 640,
I'm starting to think that maybe a bug in gentoo nagios 1.4[5].

I would really really appreciate if you help solve this problem.

The check_dhcp plugin would work if nagios is on the same broadcast

That's because Nagios only performs the host check if it receives a
WARNING or CRITICAL on one of the services attached to the host.

If you're getting a host down notification then whatever you're using
for the host's check_command is failing. Try changing that to something
that will return ok even if one of the PC's is down. (I would think
check_ping on the router or switch that acts as the gateway to the lab
might be a good choice in this case.)

Nagios already does this -- if you have a valid host check
defined, Nagios will tell you the host is down instead of each
servce. If you are getting a ton of service failure messages
when the host dies, you probably have some sort of dummy check
defined for the host.

Check_by_ssh is what I use, and I have exactly what you describe setup
to check the VPN gateway mesh from the VPN endpoints.

So vpn1 pings vpn2-5, vpn2 pings 1,3-5 vpn3 pings vpn1-2,4-5
etc. Works fine.

Re: [Nagios-users] R: Modify USB speed

2006-06-07 Thread Marc Powell
Pretty sketchy relationship ;) Is this radiomodem known to work via USB? How
about the adapter you are using? The software that you use to control the
radiomodem should dictate the communications rate. At least that's what I
gather from browsing the linux-usb mailing list
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-usb-users&m=106435391423643&w=2 for
example).

The linux-usb mailing site/list will likely be a more appropriate and fruitful
place to go for help for installing the serial adapter and radio modem.

Just stick NRPE on server A and server B, then run check_ping or
check_icmp via NRPE on servers A and B.

[Nagios-users] Monitoring connectivity between 2 servers

2006-06-07 Thread Arenas Alvaro
Hi list,

I want to monitor the connectivity between two servers and inform the
results with Nagios. The test involes testing if the server A is
reacheble from server C and vice versa. I also need some statistics like
the RTT. Nagios will run in another seperate server (C). All of them are
linux machines.

There is a plugin to do this?

I thought I can use the check_ping in server B to test the connectivity
with A. As check_ping has to be executed on the server from which the
test will be performed, I could use another plugin that allows the
execution of plugins in remote hosts. (right now I don't remember the
name of it, but I know that exists)

But.. There is a better approach?
Any suggestions are wellcomed.

Thanks in advance

Alvaro.

PD: I am using Nagios 2.4

2006-06-07 Thread Oliver Marshall
I cant see that they have patched anything, at least not noticeably. All
the command lines still accept the same functions, and I have been able
to literally copy and paste my nagios configs in to Groundwork.

I agree that, for an open source company, they don't seem to be very
open source, in that I don't seem to be able to compile groundwork for
my system, instead using precompiled RPM's.

Saying that, a lot of the groundwork functionality is available in
segments from their site, though the documentation on getting these to
function the same was as the finished Groundwork package is very
poor...ie not there.

About the only thing that I *REALLY* would like to see in Nagios, and
that I would miss about not using Groundwork, is the status screens. One
in particular is very good, and very simple too. The other status
screens involve WAY too much clicking to get to any information of
merit, but they are still much better than the Nagios ones.

I haven't had a chance to look at Groundwork's software, so I can't
really comment on their application.

However, I would personally like Groundwork to contribute more to the
community. I'm sure they must have patched Nagios and the Nagios
Plugins for their own implementation and I'd like to see some more of
those come back to us. While the GPL does not mandate it, it is in
the best interests of the entire community if there is not just
"take", but also a bit more "give".

Call me silly, but, for monitoring each server, can't you just assign
each server its own IP (if each hasn't already got one), and then
monitor the response on those IPs?

We have a four server cluster (windows based) that operates using RRDNS,
and each has it's own IP (clearly), and on each we have the NSClient and
test various things locally, as well as pinging the IP's and checking
the individual http ports on each.

check_http version 1.89 (which comes with nagios-plugins 1.4.3) can set
a
User-Agent-String:

 -A, --useragent=STRING
   String to be sent in http header as "User Agent"

But there's a problem with agent-names like "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;
MSIE
6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)" - nagios didn't like the
semicolon
';'. It seems, that everything after it is ignored (like a comment).
One solution for this can be to define a own macro (e.g. $USER3$) with
the
escaped semicolon and then use this macro within the agent name, this
should
help.

e.g.:
in resource.cfg:
$USER3$="\;"

in commands.cfg:
command_line$USER1$/check_http -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -A "Mozilla/4.0
(compatible$USER3$ MSIE 6.0$USER3$ Windows NT 5.1$USER3$ .NET CLR
1.1.4322)"

But probably you should make your own plugin if you need special cookie
support.

[Nagios-users] Nagios and/or GroundWork

2006-06-07 Thread Oliver Marshall
Thanks to the chaps at GroundWork OpenSource, I have been playing around
with their newly released GroundWork Virtual Machine for VMWare.

What are other peoples opinions on Groundwork, if any ? I love what it
does, and it makes some things really simple. However, the interface
itself seems to be fairly sluggish, even on our quad xeon monster VM
server, and theres a lot of clicks to get at the information you need.
Also, it runs on Redhat, which I have never been a fan of, preferring
Mandriva (aka Mandrake). This means that any work done via SSH typically
needs to be thought about a lot more before its done.

Just curious as to what peoples opinions are really. I'm tempted by
Groundwork, but I'm also put off by a lot of things and may stay with
Nagios proper on Mandriva.

Thanks for the tip. There is one small problem though: I do not yet master

But, I know I should learn Perl. It's much more powerfull than

[Nagios-users] How to monitor complex websites?

2006-06-07 Thread Richard Luys-Nagios User
Ladies and Gents,

I have to monitor a website that is more complex than check_http can
handle. Please advise.

1.
The website we need to monitor contains a MDM application for a product
search. This is dynamic and browser-restricted content. The User-Agent
string of the browser is checked and if not correct you will be redirected
to a static error page, instead of the search form which is dynamically
generated (with some fields filled in with defaults).

2.
This website runs on a cluster consisting of 5 nodes. Users connect to
these nodes based on a round-robbing principle. When a node goes down it
is possible that they get a error-message telling them the server is
unavailable. When this happens the node-number of the node that is
misbehaving can be found in a cookie. So what we like to have is the
following:
- check the website
- if it gives an error read the nodenumber from the cookie
- Create a CRITICAL for the website with the node-number in the output

We need to monitor this website, but check_http cannot (afaik) send a
specified User-Agent string. Is anybody aware of another solution, or
should I create one? If the latter: I was thinking about creating a check
based on wget, since wget is able to send User-Agent strings and can do
something with cookies as well. Can someone with enough knowledge on this
matter tell me if this is doable, or should I walk another path?

Please advise, any suggestions are welcome!

Hi,

We are getting lot of error messages about "Return code of 111 is
out of
bounds" from Nagios just now.
It only appears for few minutes, then everything is back to normal
again.

Any idea on what is the root cause of this problem ("Return code of

How to prevent this problem happen again in future?

Without any information about what plugins you're getting this error
with, or what your check commands are, it's unlikely you're going to get

[Nagios-users] Return code of 111 is out of bounds message

2006-06-07 Thread Lui.external
Hi,

We are getting lot of error messages about "Return code of 111 is out of
bounds" from Nagios just now.
It only appears for few minutes, then everything is back to normal
again.

Any idea on what is the root cause of this problem ("Return code of 111
is out of bounds")?

How to prevent this problem happen again in future?

[Nagios-users] Check_smtp

2006-06-07 Thread Jon Otterholm
Hi.

I am having trouble with check_smtp and postfix. Both the nagios server
and the mailserver are Freebsd 6.1. Nagios version 2.0 and plugins
version 1.4.2.

The problem is that the smtp sessions generated by check_smtp are left
running on the mailserver (sessions from other servers terminates as
expected). I am running this command towards a bunch of other
mailservers from the same nagios without problems.

Anyone with similar problems?

/Jon
