[Nagios-users-br] Não atualiza...

2006-09-04 Thread Leandro Grandini

 Olá
amigos,
 Boa
tarde.

To make things clearer, the setup I'm proposing is this:

 1. # /usr/local/sbin/visudo

 /usr/local/nagios/etc/check_logfiles.cfg

 3. # grep nagios /etc/passwd
 nagios:x:1123:100:Nagios Remote User:/usr/local/nagios:/usr/bin/bash

Note to Hari: my understanding is that sudo won't work for account that
doesn't have a valid shell. Certainly all my testing led me to that
conclusion.

 4. # passwd -l nagios

It's not clear to me exactly what the security risk is. The idea is that

someone may gain access to an unprivileged account on the system and
then
use this access and this Nagios plugin to cause mailicious damage? Or to

break the root account? In which case, it would all come down to how
secure the code of the plugin is. Is this correct?

Looks ok so far, you just have to make sure of one BIG issue.
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_logfiles MUST NOT be owned by
the nagios user/group and the nagios user/group MUST NOT have
write permissions.
Imagine someone doing:
copy /usr/bin/bash /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_logfiles

In regard to security of the plugin code itself, you're more or less
on the safe side here. Since you hardcoded the parameters of the
root call, you cannot suffer from buffer overflows caused my malicious
parameters and exploiting the plugin via the logfiles itself is both
most unlikely and secondly would mean someone already compromised the
system - else he couldn't forge syslog entries ;)

Err, I wasn't sure but this didn't sound right to me, I am sure a shell
is not required for program execution, so I tested it. After
/bin/falseing and locking the nagios account, the service check I have
sudo NOPASSWDed still worked, and I cronned a job to get the date which
ran every minute and output to a temp file. So it would seem that this
is not correct. A valid shell is not required.

Actually, to nitpick a little :)

I'd think it's entirely possible that sudo requires a valid shell,
just like FTP and such. But in that case valid would mean listed
in /etc/shells and not working like a normal shell... I'd have to
check the man-page to be sure though..

Cheers!

i am working in an ISP which uses cable modems and i am using nagios to

i had added a user in nagios few months back and 2 days ago i had decided

from

hostgroups.cfg
hosts.cfg and
services.cfg

file in nagios and restarting/reloading it, i am still getting the HOST UP

can anyone help me in this ???

/bin/false isn't listed as a valid shell on my nagios box and this
still works. hmm.

Also, you could use sudo -s /bin/bash check_command so that you get the
shell for that one command. The man page says you can use this to
override the system set shell.

If you find anything written anywhere about this then let me know. It's
entirely possible that different versions have different quirks, this
is not unknown in unixland...

fyi my sudo -V gives me the version as "Sudo version 1.6.8p9" (lots of
extras output omitted)

[Nagios-users] FreeNAC: Open Source NAC

2006-09-04 Thread Hector.Ortiz
FreeNAC provides easy to use VLAN assignment and LAN access control for Cisco
Switches and all kind of network devices (Servers, Workstations, Printers,
IP-Phones, Webcams...).

FreeNAC can be considered as having two phases.

Initially, we have taken OpenVMPS (which provides MAC based access control),
added a MySQL back end, a GUI, improved access control algorithms, scalability,
redundancy, alerting etc. This tool has been published as OpenSource on
FreeNAC.net.

Next, we are testing 802.1x support by tying in FreeRadius (802.1x provides
better security and is not limited to Cisco switches) and moving the Delphi GUI
to a web based user interface.

The 'plan' is for the project to move forward to eventually become THE
OpenSource Enterprise tool for dynamic VLAN assignment and LAN/WLAN
authentication.

So, we wish to solicite community opinions, expertise, help and feedback. Are
you interested in this tool, would you like to use it or even like to
contribute to it (documentation, support, development, promotion, architecture,
review...)?

Please visit us on www.freenac.net!

Re: [Nagios-users] Trouble with passive checks and freshness

2006-09-04 Thread Christopher Odenbach

Hi,

This works fine for nearly every host. But there is one host, which
is not different from the others, that makes trouble. The data is
coming in every 5 minutes, but Nagios keeps flipping between active
  and passive mode:

Perhaps some individual configuration that crept into your system?
I'd recommend to check the objects.cache file and see if this host is
actually set up identical to the others.

 Hope this helps,

I just checked the objects.cache file. The host and service entries for
rana and another host are completely identical:

define host {
host_name rana
check_command check-host-alive
contact_groups No-Alarm
notification_period always
check_interval 0
max_check_attempts 3
active_checks_enabled 1

event_handler_enabled 1
low_flap_threshold 0.00
high_flap_threshold 0.00

freshness_threshold 0
check_freshness 0
notification_optionsd,u,r
notifications_enabled 1
notification_interval 0
stalking_optionsn
process_perf_data 1
failure_prediction_enabled 1
retain_status_information 1
retain_nonstatus_information1
}

define service {
host_name rana
service_description Local disk
check_periodalways
check_command check_disk!-w 15% -c 10% -x /afs -e
contact_groups Server
notification_period always
normal_check_interval 10
retry_check_interval1
max_check_attempts 1
is_volatile 0
parallelize_check 1
active_checks_enabled 0
passive_checks_enabled 1
obsess_over_service 1
event_handler_enabled 1
low_flap_threshold 0.00
high_flap_threshold 0.00
flap_detection_enabled 1
freshness_threshold 2000
check_freshness 1

notification_interval 0
stalking_optionsn
process_perf_data 1
failure_prediction_enabled 1
retain_status_information 1
retain_nonstatus_information1
}

But still all passive checks are flapping. Let me show you the log file:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] tail -2000 nagios.log | grep rana | naglog.pl
[...] (naglog.pl just formats the timestamp readable)

Here the passive check results come in - everything ok:

Hi All,I'm using the same version of sudo on my Solaris systems. And by 'valid' I didn't mean merely listed in /etc/shell; I meant a real shell like bash. However, I'm afraid I can't reproduce the problem at the moment, but I can say that I resorted to giving the nagios user a real shell only when I realised I needed to run a shell-script plugin as the root user. Someone explained to me: It would be a security flaw for sudo to allow anything to run for a user who is not otherwise entitled to a real shell. I make no comment on the reasoning--consider it hearsay--but sure enough, it was the only way I could get my plugin to work. If I get a chance to reproduce the problem, I'll see what I can dig out about it.

So it would seem that this is not correct. A valid shell is not required.

Actually, to nitpick a little :)I'd think it's entirely possible that sudo requires a valid shell, just like FTP and such. But in that case valid would mean listed in /etc/shells and not working like a normal shell... I'd have to
check the man-page to be sure though..Cheers!

It's
entirely possible that different versions have different quirks, this
is not unknown in unixland...

fyi my sudo -V gives me the version as Sudo version 1.6.8p9 (lots of
extras output omitted)

[Nagios-users] NDO 1.3.1

2006-09-04 Thread Mike Koponick
Title: NDO 1.3.1

I tried to upgrade to NDO 1.3.1 and it appears that even though I configured (./configure --with-mysql-lib=/usr/lib/mysql) and compile without errors, I get an error message When I try to start the daemon.

./ndo2db-2x -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/ndo2db.cfg

Support for the specified database server is either not yet supported, or was not found on your system.

NDO 1.2 works fine as it stands. I didnt see any differences in the configuration file between 1.2 and 1.3.1.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

In spite of removing all the checks, I still get pages about machineA
being down. Where in the world is that coming from?

Sounds like you either didn't reload nagios after your configuration
changes _or_ you have an old nagios daemon still running.

2006-09-04 Thread moshe sharon
Hi

you didn't explain what exactly you want to integrate if you want to check mrtg data simply use the plugin
check_mrtg from the nagios-plugins it can check values in the mrtg data files.

if you want to use mrtg to draw graphs for services. i recommend you to move to RRDtool which is more advanced solution then MRTG
and i recommend to usenagiosgraph 0.8.2 pretty simple to install and use-- Moshe Sharonhttp://www.centerity.com

PERFORMANCE SUGGESTIONS
---
I have no suggestions - things look okay.

so i guessed that everything was going on allright...
why i tried to use my web interface to access nagios( apache web server )
... i reach the main nagios screen..( the documentation part )
but on trying to click on any other tab i got the following error.
Internal Server Error

to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and inform them of
the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have
caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

what is happening
..
some data which might be useful..
no nagios directory is being created in /var/spool..
can anyone shed some light on this...
do i need to do something to the permissions of any dir/files..( all the
files in the nagios installation directory have been set to 775 )

Any help will be greatly appriciated.
