[Nagios-users] alerting flakey
hello. I've been using nagios for a couple of months now pretty successfully, but I've noticed that the alerting function is a bit flakey. I've been over the configuration many times, but everything seems fine. The amount of alerting it does seems to change after I restart the service with /etc/init.d/nagios restart. It was sending warning and criticals. Then, after a restart, it wasn't sending service critical alerts. Then I restarted it again. It wasn't sending anything. Then I restarted it again, and it was sending warnings. I'm using version 2.6 which I got from the CVS tree a couple of months ago. Can anybody give me a little help on this one? The alert just calls a script I wrote by hand which is referenced in the commands.cfg . I don't use the groups or anything. No alert attempt is showing up in the event log either. No, but I'm thinking now that it's always sending warnings and never sending criticals. It's not flapping. We had a server down for hours. It wasn't sending the warnings because it only does it after four. I think that part has been consistant. In the service def it looks like all four states are configured for sending alerts. Whoops! *Error: Could not read host and service status information!* The most common cause of this error message (especially for new users), is the fact that Nagios is not actually running. If Nagios is indeed not running, this is a normal error message. It simply indicates that the CGIs could not obtain the current status of hosts and services that are being monitored. If you've just installed things, make sure you read the documentation on starting Nagios. Some other things you should check in order to resolve this error include: 1. Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data errors. 2. Always verify configuration options using the *-v* command-line option before starting or restarting Nagios! 3. Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use the same status data storage options (i.e. text file or database). If the main program is storing status data in a text file and the CGIs are trying to read status data from a database, you'll have problems. Hey All, Its only a wild guess but there is a space in your config file name config file '/opt/hptc/nagios/etc/xc- hostgroups.cfg', xc- hostgroups.cfg Should it not be xc-hostgroups.cfg. Check your nagios.cfg file where you specified the above filename and verify it is the same as the actual hostgroups.cfg file. I'm a newbie and need some help. Whoops! Error: Could not read host and service status information! The most common cause of this error message (especially for new users), is the fact that Nagios is not actually running. 2. Always verify configuration options using the -v command-line option before starting or restarting Nagios! 3. Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use the same status data storage options (i.e. text file or database). If the main program is storing status data in a text file and the CGIs are trying to read status data from a database, you'll have problems. Re: [Nagios-users] NRPE and Nagios plugin for Tru64 and HPUX 10
Hi, I've successfully compiled the nrpe, nsca and *most* of the nagios-plugin binaries for hpux 10.20. Off the top of my head: There were a few plug-ins that wouldn't compile, I didn't need them so i removed from the Makefile. Nrpe and Nsca src required a few changes: -didn't bother trying to compile in ssl support -the compiler didn't like some of the operators used in utils.c ( had to change if = to ifin places) nrpe config options $ ./configure --prefix=/opt/nagios --with-nrpe-user=nagios --with-nrpe-group=nagios --disable-ssl --without-ssl CCOPTS=+DA1.1 CXXOPTS=+DA1.1 --enable-command-args nsca config options: ./configure --prefix=/opt/nagios CCOPTS=+DA1.1 CXXOPTS=+DA1.1 I'll be upgrading to the latest nrpe/nsca version shortly and will post more specifics then. --kyleo On 3/7/07, C. [Nagios-users] Current States logged upon log rotation
I recently upgraded from 1.0b to 2.7. I noticed that immediately after my daily log rotation, the current state of all hosts and services is entered in the log file. As I have thousands of hosts/services, this makes the log (in my case) unnecessarily large, and was hoping to find an option to prevent those states from being logged. Here is a sample of entries I am referring to: Informational Message[03-07-2007 00:00:00] CURRENT SERVICE STATE: hidden;Ping;OK;HARD;1;PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 29.40 ms Informational Message[03-07-2007 00:00:00] CURRENT SERVICE STATE: hidden;Ping;OK;HARD;1;PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 73.01 ms Informational Message[03-07-2007 00:00:00] CURRENT HOST STATE: hidden;UP;HARD;1;PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 10.64 ms Informational Message[03-07-2007 00:00:00] CURRENT HOST STATE: hidden;UP;HARD;1;PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 28.26 ms The documentation references the log_initial_states entry in the main configuration file, which seems like it should control this option. But as you can see by my config file below, it's disabled. Should I be looking at a different option(s)? So near 0 is rather good. Having a schedula running 3 minutes slow seems to indicate the system is having a bit of a hard time keeping up. Given it is a test version I would not be surprised if there is some error in these calculations. [Nagios-users] Nagios drops service checks when executing a host event handler?
Hi, i have a strange problem i quite don't understand to handle. Question: Is Nagios dropping service checks when executing a host event handler? Situation: 1. We are monitoring 85 Windows Servers with about 630 service checks being performed. check_ping is being run on all servers. 2. Any and all performance data is being passed to a custom shell script. Among others, this script is writing the performance data to a text file 3. The text file containing the performance data is then passed to our data warehouse in order to generate reports. Problem: Per day, there are about 150 checks (Ping) NOT being executed at all. When checking our external text file, i see (example here) that a check at 16:23 is missing. Actually, it seems like check_ping at 16:23 was not executed on ANY host at all. 02-19-2007 16:21:18#SRVDE050#Ping#OK#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 4.24 ms# SRVDE050#02-19-2007 16:21:18#Ping#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 4.24 ms 02-19-2007 16:22:18#SRVDE050#Ping#OK#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 1.21 ms# SRVDE050#02-19-2007 16:22:18#Ping#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 1.21 ms 02-19-2007 16:24:45#SRVDE050#Ping#OK#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 7.24 ms# SRVDE050#02-19-2007 16:24:45#Ping#PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 7.24 ms Problem source could be: When checking nagios.log, i see that a host event handler was being executed at that time. Workflow: 1. check_ping reports a problem (host down, for example) 2. nagios executes the configured host event handler This is the point where it seems to me, that ANY check related to the same check_command (here: check_ping) are being dropped at that time. Maybe i am missing something here...? We use Nagios 2.6. Any help is appreciated.
