[Nagios-users] too many Notifications

2007-07-05 Thread Lalita Drolia
Hi,

I know already a lot has been discussed on the notifications topic but I
am sorry I still want to ask this.

I would like to receive only one notification when a host goes down and
one when it comes up, even if there maybe a gap of days in between.

I have read about the concept of escalations but I am not sure if it
will solve the purpose.

Can you please suggest me how we can do this.

Thank you in advance.

Lalita.

Hi Lev,
As I understand, is it right that if I make
notification_interval as 0 that will generate only 1 mail every time the
state changes.
I could keep notification_options as d,u,r.

Hi Lalita,

Edit the hosts.cfg file as appropriate; especially the
notification_interval
notification_period and most of all
notification_options

You can try and set the notification_interval to 0. That way you

[Nagios-users] Nagios XML Engine problems

Hello everybody!
I installed NXE and all useful libraries and addons but have problems

The main question is the next. For what version of Nagios NXE written?
I ask this because in nxe.config I see strange file status.log. There

Re: [Nagios-users] too many Notifications

2007-07-05 Thread Lalita Drolia

I guess setting notification-interval to 0 should solve my issue.
But I have two more queries-
1) sometimes a machine is rebooted on purpose. I would not like to
receive a notification then. Which means I would like Nagios to wait for
15 minutes before sending out an alert. I guess giving
max_check_attempts a high value should solve this. But is there any
other way? And what should be this value ideally to wait for 15 minutes.
2) as I mentioned, I have made settings to get an alert only once.
But is it possible to get an alert for all machines once in a week too,
say every Monday morning?

Thank you very much for all your help.
Please reply,

Lalita

Read the following:

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/xodtemplate.html

Especially -

Under the Host Definition sub-heading:

notification_interval: This directive is used to define the number
of time units to wait before re-notifying a contact that this
server is still down or unreachable. Unless you've changed the
interval_length directive from the default value of 60, this number
will mean minutes. If you set this value to 0, Nagios will not re-
notify contacts about problems for this host - only one problem
notification will be sent out.

[Nagios-users] FW: Monitoring AJAX applications

2007-07-05 Thread Peter van den Berg
(sorry, this time in plain text)

Hi

I have a website with an AJAX application in it, and I want to check if
the application is working. This means using the application: selecting
certain options, proceding to the second step, making some choices there
and then proceding to the third step. (possibly: the options change over
time)

I can use the standard check_http to check the app is there, but not any
of the next steps. I've looked at webinject, but I can't see a way to
use that. A search at nagiosexchange shows some apps using AJAX
technology, but nothing to monitor it.

Has anyone got experience monitoring AJAX apps, or can someone give some
hints how to perform the checks?

Versions:
Nagios 2.9
Plugins 1.4.6
Webinject 1.41

Instead of using host_name, use hostgroup_name.

Using templates is the best way to keep your config files small and organized.

Hello List

I'm just in the process of doing a new install of Nagios, and I find
myself thinking that I'm going to end up with a ping_check with a line

Is there a good way to reduce the bloat and improve the manageability of
the configuration?

What is the recommended path to make sure your nagios config doesn't
become something that only one person can make changes to, because of
its complexity?

I look forward to your thoughts.

For service checks this is pretty straightforward adjusting
retry_check_interval and max_check_attempts. You do not want a
max_check_attempts set that long for host checks with nagios-2.x or
prior. Nagios stops _all_ other processing while hosts are being
checked, up to max_check_attempts, so for 15 minutes nagios would do
nothing but check that host. Using scheduled downtime is the easiest and
preferred way or you could escalations but that gets messier.

 2) as I mentioned, I have made settings to get an alert only once.
But is it possible to get an alert for all machines once in a week
too,
 say every Monday morning?

You'd need to create a custom notification script that contained this
logic. Nagios does not have the ability to queue notifications; it'll
call the notification script as soon as they're triggered. Your script
could take those, store them in a file or database, then send them
whenever you chose.

Use templates as much as possible, create standard checks for different
types of hosts, use a database/front end to store host/service
information that's important to your checks, autogenerate as much of
your configs from the database as possible.

Well. If you reboot you have some sort of planned maintenance going on. So
why not put the unit in maintenance for that period?

[Nagios-users] Whoops! Error: Could not read object configuration data!

2007-07-05 Thread Guille
Hello again guys, im trying to install a new nagios but, i cant fix this errors
when i
try to see the host details;

Whoops! Error: Could not read object configuration data!

   1. Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check
for errors.
   2. Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data
errors.
   3. Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use the same
object data
storage options (i.e. default text file or template-based file).

The nagios is working i can see the procces doing a ps -aux, and doing the
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg dont look
error neither

Things look okay - No serious problems were detected during the pre-flight
check

What could be wrong ?

Thanks a lot.

Guillermo.

This may due to file permissions issue.
apache should be configured to run nagios.

This may due to file permissions issue.
apache should be configured to run nagios.

Umm, no. Nagios should not be running as the apache user. As long as
you're using the default permissions from the installer, running as the
nagios user should be sufficient for all but the external command file.
The documentation details how to set that up correctly.

 Hell Nagios Group,

What is the time range that check_mysql basis the Queries per second

Is for the last hour, day or lifetime of the server? or something
else?

It's coming directly from mysql via the 'status' command --

Current database:
Current user: redacted@localhost

Verify that you've followed the directions here -

[Nagios-users] Host key verification for check_by_ssh not working properly

2007-07-05 Thread bthayre
It's been some time since i've had to configure this plugin, so i may be
doing it improperly. Now one of the command that nagios will run looks
like this:
define command{
command_namecheck_slash_free
command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -i /var/ssh/nagios-key -l nagios
-H $HOSTADDRESS$ -C '$USER1$/check_disk -w $\ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ -p
/'
}
So i've created an rsa key pair and placed it in some arbitrary directory
and i've changed the ownership and permissions so that my nagios user owns
and is the only user permitted to use the nagios-key. On the host machine
i've placed the public key in the nagios user */.ssh/authorized_keys file.
Now switching to my nagios user on the central server i can ssh into the
host machine all under the nagios user with no problem, but when nagios
tries it via check_by_ssh i get this:

CURRENT SERVICE STATE: $HOSTADDRESS$.local;SSH Disk
Check;UNKNOWN;HARD;4;Remote command execution failed: Host key
verification failed.

where the hostaddress is the host machine i'm trying to ssh into. I've
also tried this using root as the user to avoid any permissions
complications but i still recieve the same error.
Any help would be great, thanks!

When you SSH into the server from the command line, make sure you do it
using the exact same address Nagios uses (i.e., if you're going in by
HOSTADDRESS in Nagios, don't use a DNS name on the command line), and
that you're doing it as the user Nagios runs under.

An entry needs to be in the Nagios user's known_hosts that exactly matches
the address Nagios is using to get to the machine.

(As you can see, now specific errors are listed. Any other Nagios log that I
can look through to help debug the issue?)

Actually, the specific errors *are* listed:

Error: There are no services defined!
Error: There are no hosts defined!
Error: There are no host groups defined!
Error: There are no contacts defined!
Error: There are no contact groups defined!

Re: [Nagios-users] too many Notifications

2007-07-05 Thread Lalita Drolia

That is a good suggestion. But many times our users give a reboot. And
explaining them the process of nagios and log in downtime is not a very
feasible idea. :)

I guess setting notification-interval to 0 should solve my issue.
But I have two more queries-
 1) sometimes a machine is rebooted on purpose. I would not like to
receive a notification then. Which means I would like Nagios to wait
for
15 minutes before sending out an alert. I guess giving
max_check_attempts a high value should solve this. But is there any
other way? And what should be this value ideally to wait for 15
minutes.

Well. If you reboot you have some sort of planned maintenance going on.
So
why not put the unit in maintenance for that period?

[Nagios-users] question on how NSClient++ works

2007-07-05 Thread Rogelio Bastardo

I'm reading through the NSClient++ documentation
http://trac.nakednuns.org/nscp/wiki/Documentation

but I don't quite understand how the plugins work. The documentation lists

command[my_command]=/some/executable
my_command=/some/executable

Are there some Windows executable plugins that I need? In other words,
check_nrpe on the server queries this NSClient++ plugin, and then what does
it do?
