If you really want an answer, you should provide some information like how your
HTTP check is configured, what error message is returned when it runs, as well
as the standard information you should always include with any question to this
list (see the footer on every email to this list regarding versions and OS).

[Nagios-users] Not sending RECOVERY notifications

2008-04-01 Thread Sebastian Ries
Hi

I have a distributed Nagios system with about 700 services.
(based on debian sarge, nagios 1.3)

Everything works fine exept one thing:

For one service I do not get a RECOVERY ALERT :-/

As the service goes down, I get a message but as the service comes up
again nagios even does not try to send a message... (I checked this in
the log)

Does anyone have a hint where to look at?
Service configuration is same as similar services on other hosts (these
work fine...)

The only hint I have is that the service is down for a very short time.
Is there any value that preserves sending notifications for one service
within a short period of time?

Regards
Sebastian Ries

2008-04-01 Thread Alex Dehaini
Davide,
Make sure you read this very very well

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/notifications.html

It will answer all your questions.

Also, you can't specify the number of times messages can be sent to you but
you can specify the amount of time to run service and host checks. You can
also specify the state a device is in before it can send notifications.

All plugins should go in /usr/local/nagios/libexec folder, the plugin should
be made executable. You can reference the path to the libexec folder by
specifying the path of the plugins in resource.cfg file.

Hi,

I want to modify the value of *Retry Check Interval *to put it at 5
min. So, i modified the nagios.cfg at this:*

#*command_check_interval=1
command_check_interval=5

When i restart nagios server, the *Retry Check Interval *in services
definition don't have modified. If i add a new service, the *Retry
Check Interval *has always the value '1'. Why?

Can someone help me, please?

Hi Pallav,

if you just want to monitor, if the management-interface of the switch
is up or down, you can use check_icmp or something like that.
MIB-2 is a standart-MIB which suits for many different devices.

If you wanna monitor the fan, or the cpu-load or something like that,
you need the corresponding OID from MIB-2 (or from some special
Cisco-Mibs). However, this depends greatly on what you want to monitor.
(Maybe you want to tell us? ;-) )

I think you will need to do some research here:

SNMP : http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/esnmp/

Cisco MIB Browser:
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseOID.do?local=ensubstep=2t
ranslate=Translatetree=NO

There is no hard and fast answer, it depends exactly what on that switch
you want to monitor.

If you just want to check that the switch is on, use something like
check_ping and forget SNMP altogether.

Pallav, why don't you just google for this?

I don't think many on this list appreciate being your personal search engine.
None of us get paid for our advice on this list, and there are plenty out there
who are happy to get paid for this type of consultancy.

This link seems to have much of the information you might need:
http://nagios.manubulon.com/index_info.html

I'm sure there are specific Cisco check plugins out there as well. Any google
search for something including some of the following search terms: Nagios,
Cisco, SNMP, Plugin, Check will unearth a myriad of methods you can use to
achieve what you need.

Re: [Nagios-users] Not sending RECOVERY notifications

2008-04-01 Thread Sebastian Ries
Hi

Does anyone have a hint where to look at?
Service configuration is same as similar services on other hosts
  (these
  work fine...)

First thing to check is that the contact has an 'r' in the
host_notifications_options. Otherwise the contact won't be notified on
 recoveries.

Yes it has.
This contact does get RECOVERY notifications for other services but not
for the specific one...

The notification options for the service are the same as for other
services as all have the statement
use generic-service
within their configuration...

Regards
Sebastian Ries

Re: [Nagios-users] Help : OID

2008-04-01 Thread Alex Dehaini
Pallav,
CPU usage - use snmp. This is the OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.57.0

Memory usuage - use check_snmp_mem.pl from
http://nagios.manubulon.com/snmp_mem.html

System description - snmpwalk the entire device or search for it on cisco
website

Port Status - Which port do you want to monitor. You can use check_tcp or
check_udp

Hope this helps.

Alex

The OID depends on what you want to look for. So first os all, get

[Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows Servers - Comparing Options

2008-04-01 Thread Cook, Garry
For the past few years Nagios has been the most important tool for monitoring
my network and Linux servers. I now have 'buy in' from the department handling
the Windows Servers to at least show them how Nagios can help them to stay on
top of issues, without all of the false positive alerts that they get from
current tools, which can cause people to want to ignore most issues.

So, my question is, what is the best option for monitoring Windows Servers and
why?
An important factor to consider is that I will probably not have Administrative
access to any of the Windows Servers that I will be monitoring.

I'm currently considering three options for the reasons shown below (in order
of preference):
1) WMI checks
Pros
-Complete control of NRPE service on 'my' Windows Server
(Can this be distributed over two boxes?)
-Complete control of check commands on Nagios Server
Cons
-NRPE service must be run from an account with access to all Windows
Servers.

2) Agent checks - NRPE-NT or some other current Windows Agent
Pros
-???
Cons
-Requires an agent setup and running on every Windows Server
-No direct control of agents/check commands

3) SNMP based checks
Pros
-Complete control over check commands on Nagios Server
Cons
-No direct control of SNMP Community Strings/ACL allowing access from
Nagios
-No direct control of SNMP service

How do you do it? Are there any other Pros Cons that I might be missing? Do
you think I should consider a process/utility not listed?

I'm open to suggestions on which agent is best, but I can probably determine
this from list archives and testing. At this time I'm more interested in which
high-level option would be the best fit.
Perhaps there is a good reason to use more than one of the above options, and
I'm just not aware of it yet.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

[Nagios-users] Bus error on start and verification

2008-04-01 Thread Kevin Freels
Greetings!

To get the prelims out of the way:

 Nagios 3.0
 FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE

Problem: I have built and installed 3.0 on this system, but when I run the
verification, I get a bus error.

The output is:

nagios# /usr/local/nagios3/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios3/etc/nagios.cfg

Bus error

Not a lot to go on. :-( And, yes, the Klingon at the end is as it is output.
Funny, tho, the last line in the config file is the max_debug_file_size
config, but it looks like it repeats back up to the top where the log_file
is. Does this have something to do with the caching?

No core file produced, but if I try the init script, I get:

Starting nagios:Bus error (core dumped)
CONFIG ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios configuration.

and a core file in the rc.d directory.

I built this natively and saw no errors during the build or the install(s).
Here is the set of config options I used:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/nagios3 \
--with-nagios-user=nagios\
--with-nagios-group=nagios \
--with-lockfile=/var/run/nagios3.lock \
--enable-embedded-perl \
--with-perlcache \
--with-checkresult-dir=/var/spool/nagios3/checkresults \
--with-htmurl=/nagios3/ \
--with-cgiurl=/nagios3/cgi-bin \
--with-httpd-conf=/usr/local/etc/apache2/httpd.conf

This is also the same system that we have Nagios 1.2 running on.

Ideas? Bueller?

Thanks, as always!

I re-compiled without the embedded-perl and perlcache, and the verification
passed. So maybe there's an issue with one of these.

Anyways, if anyone has had a similar problem, I'd still be interested in

Not a lot to go on. :-( And, yes, the Klingon at the end
is as it is output. Funny, tho, the last line in the config

it repeats back up to the top where the log_file is. Does
this have something to do with the caching?

No core file produced, but if I try the init script, I get:

 Starting nagios:Bus error (core dumped)
CONFIG ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios configuration.

and a core file in the rc.d directory.

I built this natively and saw no errors during the build or
the install(s). Here is the set of config options I used:

 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/nagios3 \
 --with-nagios-user=nagios\
 --with-nagios-group=nagios \
 --with-lockfile=/var/run/nagios3.lock \
 --enable-embedded-perl \

 --with-checkresult-dir=/var/spool/nagios3/checkresults \
 --with-htmurl=/nagios3/ \
 --with-cgiurl=/nagios3/cgi-bin \
 --with-httpd-conf=/usr/local/etc/apache2/httpd.conf

This is also the same system that we have Nagios 1.2 running on.

 Ideas? Bueller?

 Thanks, as always!

Re: [Nagios-users] Bus error on start and verification

2008-04-01 Thread Gerald N. Ginsburg
I had basically the same problem with Solaris 8 -- segmentation fault when
running a verify. I followed your lead and reconfigured with
--prefix=/usr/local/nagios-3.0
--without-embedded-perl
--without-perlcache

And it worked! Thanks very much. I did not have this problem with 3.0 rc1
or rc2 (or with 2.x).

H...

I re-compiled without the embedded-perl and perlcache, and the verification
passed. So maybe there's an issue with one of these.

Anyways, if anyone has had a similar problem, I'd still be interested in
hearing about it.

[Nagios-users] A fix for EXTREME slowness

2008-04-01 Thread Cary Petterborg
I'm resending this email because there was not a single response to my
previous email. I have to think that someone else has run into this
problem, and I would like to know what others have done and suggestions
for the implementation of a good fix. We have solved this problem in the
short term, but we want to implement a more robust long terms solution.
We had a huge performance increase from fixing the problem, so if you
have noticed your web server taking a long time to process your
status.cgi and extinfo.cgi page requests, please read on.

This email has a description of the problem, the symptoms, our interim
fix, and a possible long term fix. If you have been noticing large (or
larger) load times for status.cgi and/or extinfo.cgi, please read this
entire message.

We have recently had our comments.dat file grow to a much larger size
(due to increased need for comments). This file grew to about 4.8MB. To
read or write this size of file is not a problem, but the processing of
it in status.cgi and extinfo.cgi was slowing things down significantly.
To give you an idea, the page load times went from a few seconds to over
a minute on our production systems.

Since the load times were so bad we started looking for the cause. It
became evident that it was the processing of the comments.dat file. We
created a program to take the comments more than 30 days old and archive
them into an archive file. The reduces the load time so significantly
that we decided to do some tests on a non-production system.

We took the large 4.8MB file and reduced the number of entries until
there were only 30 days worth in the file (down to 90, 80, 70, 60, 50,
40 and finally 30 days). Then we ran tests on status.cgi for each of
these filesizes. Using just a crude stopwatch we measured the times it
took to load the various pages. I have created a spreadsheet file and
graph for the data. The test seems to indicate that the size of the
comments.dat file dramatically affects the page load times. On the test
server, the load times for the 4.8MB file were in the 9 to 10 second
range, while the 2MB file were under 2 seconds. Here is a table of the
results:

File size | Time
-
4.85 | 9.5
3.95 | 6.0
3.00 | 2.8
2.03 | 2.0

This seems to show rather exponential growth rather than linear. We have
ended up in the short term archiving the old data, reducing the file to
the much more reasonable 2MB size and cutting the times significantly.

The results on the production server is even more dramatic reducing the
load time from 70 seconds to about 3 seconds. This was more of a problem
on the production system because there were more status.cgi processes
running at the same time. A 95% reduction in the load time is very
significant.

Are there others who have seen this as a big problem, or is it not a
typical problem that has been encountered? Have others found a way to
fix this problem other than reducing the number of comments in the
comments file?

So there seems to be a need to make this information be more a database
type access, rather than a parse this big file and see what drops out
that we want access. This could easily be done with a real relational
database, or even a more simple database, to retrieve only the comments
for the host/service desired. We are willing to do the work on this, but
would like it to be incorporated into Nagios code base so that we are
not having to port this functionality on upgrades in the future.

If you are interested in this type of enhancement, please let me know.
In addition, if you have suggestions for the implementation of real
comments database (yes, we are experienced in this area, and have OUR
ideas of how we want to implement it, but we'd like to know of other
opinions so that we can increase the likelihood of it being incorporated
into the standard release), please let me know.

Thanks!

Cary Petterborg

[Nagios-users] checking all partitions on Windows host via check_nt?

2008-04-01 Thread Roger
In the nrpe.cfg file on my montored box, I have the following command (which
works beautifully).

check command[check_disks_proc_mounts]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w
15% -c 10% $(for x in $(cat /proc/mounts |awk '{print $2}')\; do echo -n
-p $x \; done)

I am looking to make a check_nt equivalent to that command. Has
anyone done this? Or do they have any ideas on how I might possibly do
so?
