Re: [Nagios-users] passive host alive check?

2010-04-22 Thread Klein, Oliver
Hi Giorgio

I know this with check-host-alive, but I don´t understand how to nagios resolve
the name or IP address, cause it´s a private ip? here you can see the host
definition

define host{
use  fuerstliche-server  ; Inherit
default values from a template
parents  astaro
host_name  sbs-server.fuerstliche.local; The name we're giving
to this host
aliassbs-server.fuerstliche.local; A longer
name associated with the host
address 192.168.1.10
}

Any hints again for me? ;-)

regards olly

Hi,

let's have a glance to the check-host-alive definition:

define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive
command_line$USER1$/check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -w 3000.0,80%
-c 5000.0,100% -p 5
}

As you can see, it uses $HOSTADDRESS$ so, as long as in you host definition you
write:

host_name fantasy-name
address   xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

and the address is a valid ip, your check-host-alive will never try to resolve
the fake (aka not dns) name and will use "address" ip as the target for
check_ping.

In this way, on your web interface you will see the "fake" name but the check
will be done on the real ip address.

Re: [Nagios-users] Host unreachable what's nagios do.

2010-04-22 Thread Giorgio Zarrelli

From the manual:

"When hosts change state (i.e. from UP to DOWN), the host reachability
logic in Nagios kicks in. The reachability logic will initiate
parallel checks of the parents and children of whatever hosts change
state. This allows Nagios to quickly determine the current status of
your network infrastructure when changes occur."

[Nagios-users] Check_swap binary on OS X

2010-04-22 Thread Richard Lynch
[resending after subscribing; apologies if admin also approves]

Check_swap is failing on a fresh install on OS X.

This is no surprise, as it¹s trying to run
/opt/local/libexec/nagios/check_swap

There is no such file.

What should have installed it, and where would I find it for OS X?...

PS
There are other files there; some binaries, some +x scripts.

An old Ubuntu install by my predecessor also has no check_swap ...

Re: [Nagios-users] check_by_ssh failing - host key verification failed

2010-04-22 Thread O'Donnell, Robert L
Neither of Frank's suggestions solved it, but something strange did happen.
First there was no known_users folder under nagios, only under /root. I copied
this file and tried the check again. Nothing.

I deleted the lines referring to the host both by name and by ip. I logged in
again, and I went directly to the command line without being asked for a host
key. I checked both known_user files again, and there were NO REFERENCES to
the host machine, even though I was in the machine via ssh.

Curiouser and curiouser.

In learning more about error logs, I found the following.

Nagios command line send looks good. The only error it is getting is remote
command execution failed.

I checked the logs on the target machine, and they said " Error: PAM:
Authentication failure for nagios from (fully_qualified_machine_name)"

-Original Message-

Add "-o StrictHostKeyChecking=no" to your check_by_ssh command line.

Or you can edit ~nagios/.ssh/known_hosts, remove the line for that host,
then su to the nagios user and manually ssh to the host. Type "yes" when
it asks you about the host key.

If you're needing to have warnings sent via email and criticals
sent via SMS (for example), it's not difficult. The solution isn't
what I'd call simple or ideal, but:

1) Define two contacts for each user
2) One contact gets notifications via email, and its only alerting
   options are warning and recovery
3) One contact gets notifications via SMS, and its only alerting
   options are critical and recovery
4) Add *both* contacts to each host/service that you want monitored
   in this fashion

Nice, simple, and clean? Nope. But it works and works well.

So it's working, it's out of the range you specified.

Check your warning and critical spec's, the "tolerated" syntax was changed.

If you can find a way to do this, please let me know! My boss is wanting our
Nagios installation to do this very thing, but I have yet to find a way to make
this happen.

Re: [Nagios-users] [Nagios-devel] FW: Timeperiods and oncall rotation with UK Public holidays

2010-04-22 Thread Daniel Rich
This is one of my pet peeves of Nagios -- that notifications are not
particularly flexible. That is why we have two sets of contacts for everyone,
one that notifies via pager and e-mail, and one that only notifies via. e-mail;
as there isn't a way to have Nagios do that for us.

We do something very similar to what you are trying to do. We have a contact
"groupname-oncall" that gets assigned to hosts and services a particular group
is responsible for. That alias exists both in our mail system and our paging
system, and is updated automatically by a script to point to the correct
individual. The hardest part of this is writing the script to do the updates,
as it has to be able to parse a configuration file with the dates/times your
individuals are on-call and update the mail and paging systems with the correct
information. In our case, the aliases are stored in LDAP, so it is trivial for
us to make the updates.

For years I have wanted to find the time to write a back-end notification
script for Nagios that would make notifications more flexible, I just haven't
had the time. I want to be able to do things like:
  o Notify via. e-mail on warnings but send a text message for critical or for
some services/hosts send text-messages for everything
  o Only notify the on-call individuals after hours but notify everyone during
business hours
  o Remove duplicate messages
  o Allow for two-way messages so an reply can be sent via. e-mail or SMS to
ack an issue (I almost have this in place today)
  o Have a configuration file that drives all of the above

[Nagios-users] check_snmp checks are broken post update to nagios-plugins-snmp-1.4.14-1.el5 from nagios-plugins-snmp-1.4.13-11.el5

2010-04-22 Thread Wade Peacock
After updating our nagios-plugins via yum yesterday we have an issue with our
service checks that rely on
check_snmp

Here is are some samples:

1)

./check_snmp ups-shop -C public1 -o mib-2.33.1.2.4.0 -w 51:75 -c 25:50 -v

/usr/bin/snmpget -t 1 -r 5 -m ALL -v 1 [authpriv] ups-shop:161 mib-2.33.1.2.4.0
SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.33.1.2.4.0 = INTEGER: 100
SNMP CRITICAL - *100* | SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.33.1.2.4.0=100

An OK is expected.

2)

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_snmp -H bw1.in.sunwave.net -C public1 -o
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121 -w 17:18
-c 0:16 -v

/usr/bin/snmpget -t 1 -r 5 -m ALL -v 1 [authpriv] bw1.in.sunwave.net:161
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121
DOCS-IF-MIB::docsIfSigQSignalNoise.121 = INTEGER: 28.8 dB
SNMP CRITICAL - *29* | DOCS-IF-MIB::docsIfSigQSignalNoise.121=29

Once again an OK is expected.

Current  version is  nagios-plugins-snmp-1.4.14-1.el5
Previous version was nagios-plugins-snmp-1.4.13-11.el5

Net-snmp remained unchanged. Current version net-snmp-5.3.2.2-7.el5_4.2

I have tried "tweaking the ranges" to no avail.

Two more test samples:

No Critical range

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_snmp -H bw1.in.sunwave.net -C public1 -o
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121 -w 17:18  -v

/usr/bin/snmpget -t 1 -r 5 -m ALL -v 1 [authpriv] bw1.in.sunwave.net:161
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121
DOCS-IF-MIB::docsIfSigQSignalNoise.121 = INTEGER: 28.8 dB
SNMP WARNING - *29* | DOCS-IF-MIB::docsIfSigQSignalNoise.121=29

No Critical or Warning Range

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_snmp -H bw1.in.sunwave.net -C public1 -o
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121   -v

/usr/bin/snmpget -t 1 -r 5 -m ALL -v 1 [authpriv] bw1.in.sunwave.net:161
transmission.127.1.1.4.1.5.121
DOCS-IF-MIB::docsIfSigQSignalNoise.121 = INTEGER: 28.8 dB
SNMP OK - 28.8 dB |

Any thoughts?

I've changed the why I work out the host_name of the host being depended
upon to make it more dynamic so this is no longer an issue for me.

If someone could double check my syntax to make sure I have not made an
error, I will post to nagios-dev as a possible bug.

cheers,
Aidan

Re: [Nagios-users] passive host alive check?

2010-04-22 Thread Giorgio Zarrelli
Hi,

let's have a glance to the check-host-alive definition:

define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive
command_line$USER1$/check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -w 3000.0,80%
-c 5000.0,100% -p 5
}

As you can see, it uses $HOSTADDRESS$ so, as long as in you host
definition you write:

host_name fantasy-name
address   xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

and the address is a valid ip, your check-host-alive will never try to
resolve the fake (aka not dns) name and will use "address" ip as the
target for check_ping.

In this way, on your web interface you will see the "fake" name but the
check will be done on the real ip address.

It can't be done. You could add all holidays as a separate timeperiod and
then specify that timeperiod as an exception in the others, but that would
mean all on-call staff would get notified during each holiday.

There is no syntax for "if this contact should be contacted at all during
this day, use these times instead of the ones in the timeperiod, otherwise
keep ignoring it". I'd hate to have to try to code it up too, but if you
make a patch and add some tests to verify that it works, I'll go ahead and
apply it for you.

Hi

ok one more problem, so i changed the host check from "check-passiv" to
"check-host-alive" , so that works
for some domains with a really FQDN, but we have some domains with f.e.
*.local. So how can I get an answer
from these hosts?

check_ping: Ungültige(r) Hostname/Adresse - sbs-server.fuerstliche.local

Re: [Nagios-users] FW: Timeperiods and oncall rotation with UK Public holidays

2010-04-22 Thread kristian
Hi Deborah

I wonder if you could create a new timeperiod with the holidays defined, and
then have a separate contact group (eg. Vacation_oncall) that would receive
alerts 0-24 on those days only and set these up in a similar way to your
existing escalation objects?

Then you could also 'exclude' the vacation period from the normal oncall
rota so duty personnel only get 'vacation' period alerts.

Not sure if its a workable solution, but its an interesting problem. J

Cheers

Kristian

Subject: [Nagios-users] Timeperiods and oncall rotation with UK Public

Folks,

I'm using SLES 10 and Nagios 3.2.0.

We have 4 oncall engineers which rotate over a 4 week period, each being
oncall one week at a time.
The oncall period is 17:30 - 08:00 each working day and then the whole
period for any weekend or UK public holiday.

My definitions are :-

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name 24x7
alias   24 Hours A Day, 7 Days A Week
sunday  00:00-24:00
monday  00:00-24:00

wednesday   00:00-24:00
thursday00:00-24:00
friday  00:00-24:00
saturday00:00-24:00
}

This is for all normal monitoring of our systems.

Each oncall engineer is defined :-

AFAIK nagios passive checks ( defined usually by the users )are for services (
most users do not enable passive checks for hosts) - hence the host is never
getting a status update as it is not check as a "service" per say.
you may need to set active checks on the host , and passive test for the
host-related services , or you can change the host status manually with the use
of the external commands.

if you are using the PING test for the host - then that should be the indicator
for if the host is "alive" - as the check_host_alive is using ping to make that
determination .

Subject: [Nagios-users] Timeperiods and oncall rotation with UK Public
holidays
Importance: High

Folks,

I'm using SLES 10 and Nagios 3.2.0.

We have 4 oncall engineers which rotate over a 4 week period, each being
oncall one week at a time.
The oncall period is 17:30 - 08:00 each working day and then the whole
period for any weekend or UK public holiday.

My definitions are :-

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name 24x7
alias   24 Hours A Day, 7 Days A Week
sunday  00:00-24:00
monday  00:00-24:00
tuesday 00:00-24:00
wednesday   00:00-24:00
thursday00:00-24:00
friday  00:00-24:00
saturday00:00-24:00
}

This is for all normal monitoring of our systems.

Each oncall engineer is defined :-

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name person1-oncall
alias   person1-oncall

I have escalations set for one particular client which will happen during
oncall hours only and depending on the notification number, (4,5,6) will
send an SMS alert to the relevant person oncall.

## Escalation ONE:
define serviceescalation {
host_name   dbhost1
service_description DB Conn Check
first_notification  4
last_notification   6
notification_interval   15
escalation_options c ; Only escalate for CRITICAL alerts
escalation_period   oncall
contact_groups  wx2-sms-oncall-group
}

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name oncall
alias   Oncall Hours
sunday  00:00-24:00
monday  00:00-08:00,17:30-24:00
tuesday 00:00-08:00,17:30-24:00
wednesday   00:00-08:00,17:30-24:00
thursday00:00-08:00,17:30-24:00
friday  00:00-08:00,17:30-24:00
saturday00:00-24:00
}

And the sms-oncall-group defined for the service escalation includes all 4
oncall engineers but only the person actually oncall should get the sms
alert based on their oncall timeperiods.

define contactgroup{
  contactgroup_name   wx2-sms-oncall-group
  alias   WX2 Oncall
  members person1-oncall, person2-oncall,
person3-oncall, person4-oncall
  }

However, I've now hit a snag - how do I define UK public holidays periods as
being 24 hours (particularly if they fall on a weekday) and put that
timeperiod int

[Nagios-users] passive host alive check?

2010-04-22 Thread Klein, Oliver
Hi

i have a questions about passive checks, we use this option to monitor some
servers from our customers.
Now our problem is, that the services are in the state "OK" but the hosts are
"down", but the host is "alive".
How can I solve this? I read some docs about this issue, but I didn´t really
understand what to do now. Can anyone
give a short howto about this issue?

Big thx in advance
