Hi Mathew Thanks for your response. I have also deleted the existing RRD files so that fresh data can be captured through check commands but error is still the same. I had been tweaking the check's command line options to find the write output I wanted. Once the check worked how I wanted, I noticed I was getting an error on the graph. Since this was a new check, I deleted the existing RRD files that had been created and let new ones get created. That corrected the issue. [Nagios-users] network outages permissions
I have just installed a new Nagios server and wanting to make sure that everything is working. If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication requirements for accessing this CGI and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file. As far as I can tell everything is configured correctly and I get no errors in my apache error log. If I updated the values below authorized_for_configuration_information=nagiosadmin authorized_for_all_services=nagiosadmin authorized_for_all_hosts=nagiosadmin I get access as I would expect. Is there somewhere else that dictates authorisation that I need to update. I also have similar problems with the Event Log, Process Info and Scheduling Info pages. I am using ldap authentication and am not using the nagiosadmin user. I believe what you want is this: use_authentication=1 authorized_for_all_services=* In other words, use an asterisk wildcard for everything that you want any authenticated user to have access to. -- BlackBerryreg; DevCon Americas, Oct. 18-20, San Francisco, CA The must-attend event for mobile developers. [Nagios-users] Eternally pending, stale checks
I deployed new monitoring today, and despite a few restarts and many hours of waiting, 185/220 services are still pending. It's a 3.2.1 environment (yes, yes, upgrade, yes) with one master and multiple pollers. All this new monitoring is on one polling host. Active checks are disabled on the master, passive checks are submitted via NSCA. Freshness threshold is set to 20 minutes for checks with a 5 minute interval. The polling host executes the checks, has the right data in the status.log, but the master never receives some of the check data. The data it does receive is not consistently grouped. Service A on one host will submit consistently, but the same service on a different host will fail to submit. The master will, every 20 minutes throw messages about the checks being stale, and needing to force an immediate check, but that never seems to make it's way through. My next step, I suppose will be enabling debug mode on the master, but if history is any indication, that will cause the problem to stop happening - in addition to it being a pain to parse through debug logs for a 10k service environment. If anyone has ideas on what else to check, I'm ears. -- Mike Lindsey -- BlackBerryreg; DevCon Americas, Oct. 18-20, San Francisco, CA The must-attend event for mobile developers. Re: [Nagios-users] What the best way to monitor Windows?
Ok, so it sounds like there might be 3 best ways to monitor Windows in general. I will have to check them out in detail before deciding which way to go. I do note that the following though from reading about them - 1. Checkwmiplus * Looks like I don't need to install anything on my Windows servers (a nice advantage). * Has lots of checks available. * Looks like it will be the easiest of the 3 to get started with (yet to be proven) * Requires the linux version of wmic (doesn't look too hard to get going) * The newest of the methods 2. nsclient++ * Has been around a while (maybe the longest of the three methods), possibly making it the most proven method. * Needs an agent installed on Windows. * Has lots of checks available. * Checks have to be configured in 2 places (Nagios and the Windows host). * Can possibly do a little bit more than checkwmiplus since it has an agent installed 3. check_mk * Needs an agent installed on Windows * Needs configuration installed on Windows (can't quite work that one out yet) * Seems to have some magic auto-check creation (sounds good, but what if I don't want to check everything it finds - yet to be worked out) * Looks like this one will be the most work/complexity to get started with * Looks like it will perform the best for large installations, but for smaller installations it probably does not matter. This looks like a trade-off between complexity and performance. I wonder how many hosts/services you need to make it worth while? * There looked like a bit of an ugly config where you have to manually run some command (lodctr /s:counters.ini) to get some checks to work? Yuk! * Does some magic with my Nagios config. Do I really want some script playing around with my config? Might limit me in the future with upgrades etc as Check_mk will have to support whatever version of Nagios I use. Hi, vCenter Server - customize alarms in vCenter and run a vbscript in action tab in this alarm settings. - this script write a logfile (one line for one alarm). - nsclient++ is installed and running on vCenter server but only to execute check_logfiles.exe from Gerhard Lausser Nagios Server - check_nrpe checks every 2 Minutes this logfile on vCenter server for new lines/alarms. It works great now been since more than two years. Re: [Nagios-users] What the best way to monitor Windows?
Ok, so it sounds like there might be 3 best ways to monitor Windows in general. I will have to check them out in detail before deciding which way to go. I do note that the following though from reading about them - 1. Checkwmiplus - I switched from NSclient++ to checkwmiplus, because agent less monitoring gives me a more flexible nagios environment : - not needing a remote agent makes migration NAGIOS to another server easier, because usually because of security reasons, you will be configuring the agent to allow connections from a particular (NAGIOS) server only. - an agent needs to be extra installed on the windows server; that may seem 'easy' ; but it isn't if you are in a large IT group where people carry different heads, and things like 'convincing debates' and 'overal installation procedures' come into place. - there are disadvantages too : checkwmiplus has increased the cpu load on my nagios server dramatically because of the combined use of wmic and the perl-based checkwmiplus script. And multiple instances are running all the time for a large number of servers. I think I will have to migrate to a speedier nagios server in the future - checkwmiplus is still under very active development which has pros and cons; pros because of the active interest of the developer, cons because active installation components are still being changed, making upgrading and followup on versions a little bit more cumbersome and time intensive , then for nsclient++ , which ,already, much more stabilized.
