[Nagios-users] The Best Way Forward?
I've been looking at Nagios on and off for a while now without ever implementing anything. However I would now like to get something going live that would allow us to monitor our network better. The current scenario is that in our office basement server/comms room we have 4 x Cisco 2950G Series switches which we use as core switches (in a fail over configuration) for our server/firewall connections. These switches then connect to 2 fibre media convertors. These convertors connect to the rest of the building network via a fibre cable which runs up the length of the building terminating on each of the 3 floors of our office. Thus every floor operates independently of any other. On each floor there is a fibre transceiver which connects to a Cisco 2950 Series switch (not G series). My questions are: 1.What is the best setup to monitor the failover status of the core switches as well as bandwidth over the uplinks? 2.What is the best setup to monitor the activity/bandwidth over the fibre transceivers which are connected to each floor's switch uplink port? 3.I've also had a quick look at Fully Automated Nagios (FAN). Do you think this would be the best way to get started or building something from scratch? 4.If using FAN is not a good idea, which O/S would be the best to run Nagios on (we use Solaris and RHEL mostly)? 5.If using FAN is not a good idea, which add-ons etc. would be useful for visuals (GUI, graphs etc.) and configuration? Really sorry for all the questions (there will probably be more at some point). Many thanks for your time. [Nagios-users] GSM gateway - virtualization ...
Hi, I'd like to ask any guru here in the list Is there anbody, who has experienced the subject mentioned above. I'm running Nagios on OpenSUSE. OpenSUSE is a virtual machine under the Windows 2008 HYPER-V. I'd like to send SMS messages instead of e-mails, because mails can't be delivered in case the SMTP server is down. I don't know any specific hardware for GSM gateway and I have no idea how to use it in virtual environment, how to connect it to RS232? port in the host machine and forward it to the Nagios on the SUSE virtual?? Would anyone be so kind and give me an advice and will share his opinions? Thanks in advance. Yes, i can run all commands on the local system without errors. Thats why I m confused. I also can execute the check_openmanage Script manual on the local Maschine as Nagios User without problems. I think it must be an Problem between the script output. But why it works on other r710´s with debian squeeze? *confused* Am 18.01.2012 15:00, schrieb Eero Volotinen: 2012/1/18 Tobias Dinsetobias.di...@stegbauer.info: Hi all, i have seen that I can use this mailing list for bug reports or questions about the plugin check_openmanage from http://folk.uio.no/trondham/software/check_openmanage.html We have different Dell Servers and the Plugin mostly works. Would anyone be so kind and give me an advice and will share his opinions? We run Nagios servers as virtual machines on mid-sized ESX clusters, so our VMs might end up on any given ESX host at any given time. As a result, I virtualized our serial modem using the IOLAN product from Perle. It is basically a network-to-serial adapter. Our serial USR modem plugins into it, and it plugs into the network. Then, on the Nagios servers (RHEL), the Perle software is installed and creates a serial port that Nagios talks to. That virtual port simply talks to the IOLAN device over the network, and acts as a local serial modem. Now, our Nagios servers can end up anywhere they like, and the modem always stays local as far as Nagios is concerned. It's not infallible, every now and again the two components lose communications, but I check for that via Nagios. There certainly exists the possibility that we could: 1) Lose communications with the virtual modem AND 2) Have a widespread network outage at the same time that would completely clobber notifications, but the chances are pretty minor, and the costs are very reasonable. Please tell me that the nagios version is a typo. if not , you should upgrade to version 3 , and the sooner the better . Since check_nt is communicating with windows server was there any change on the MS platforms ? Did you compile the chdck_nt for the old machine , and just copied across ?
