If you have the nail package installed on the nagios box for sending
messages then you can edit /etc/nail.rc to have this line somewhere:
set smtp=mail.yourdomain.com

Obviously change mail.yourdomain.com to be whatever FQDN/IP your mail
server is. Then you can let nagios send messages through /usr/bin/mail

Correction to my previous email. Suse10 calls this package mailx. The
file to edit is /etc/mail.rc on that distribution.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Nagios-users] SMS alert

2007-08-29 Thread Adam Kennedy
I think it took me all of 15 minutes to get smstools3 installed/running
and get our Samba75 modem installed/running. The samba75 uses the usb
modem driver built into the kernel. Shows up as tty device. Just point
smstools3 to that and voila!

Evgeny N.Stepanov wrote:
 Hello.

Actually sending SMS messages is not related to Nagios in any way. The same
way as sending SMTP messages is not. But you can use both ways to send
 notifications. I now use smstools3 (http://smstools3.kekekasvi.com) for
sending SMS notifications. This uses GSM modem or phone to send SMS messages
connected to serial port of a server running Nagios. But you can use SMS
gateways as well. www.nagiosexchange.org has lots of scripts to send SMS in
either ways, be it SMS gateway or GSM terminal. The choice depends on your
conditions. Using SMS gateways requires instant http (internet) access to the
gateway site (usually) and you need to pay to operator. Nagios host is
usually running in closed network segment for security reasons, so bringing
it to outer world can be tricky.
Using GSM terminal is simpler and more reliable in production environments
AFAIK. And with GSM terminal you can implement more smart Nagios behaviour
using incoming SMS and event handlers to issue command to Nagios, for
 instance.
As i said, I use smstools3 with Siemens TC35i GSM terminal. Works as a
breeze! There was some issues with bringing TC35i to work, but they are
described in smstool3 FAQ and hardware compatibility documentation and i
resolved them in couple of hours :-) (for example, it doesn't like hardware
handshake, so i had to turn it off). I didn't get through sending messages in
local (russian) alphabet, but that's coming soon.
Also, there is a chance to get ICQ or jabber notifications as well. Check
 nagiosexchange.org. Good luck!

[Nagios-users] Compiling Perl check scripts

2007-06-28 Thread Adam Kennedy
In our environment, I have roughly 1000 services being checked via perl
scripts. Needless to say, it slows the nagios server down a bit *grin*

What method has anyone used to compile perl scripts? I am using perl
modules (mainly Net::SNMP, Net::DNS and various others) with the
scripts. I tried perlcc but it didn't work. Any other ideas?

Should I just bite the bullet and attempt to write a C app to do the
functions of my perl scripts instead? I would really hate to do that, as
my C skills don't go far beyond Hello World.

[Nagios-users] Nagios box latancy + tuning

2007-06-04 Thread Adam Kennedy
I'm having one heck of a time trying to get my service checks to be
something reasonable. They are 60 seconds or less for a few minutes
after starting nagios, then the service latency increases to 80 seconds
or higher (usually if left go, it ranges in 120 to 160seconds or higher).

Host check latency is 0 seconds.
Host check is check_fping

The various service checks are ping (via check_fping), roughly 5 snmp
services per host, and telnet for a handful of them.

There are 440 hosts, and roughly 1600 services being checked.
I've followed the tuning guide on the nagios website and have done all
applicable items, I think. The max_concurrent_checks is 900.

Server hardware specs:
- Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13Ghz
- 3Ware 9550SX RAID card
- Three Seagate 250Gb SATA drives running in RAID-5
- Broadcom Gigabit NIC, onboard
- 3Gb of DDR2 5300 RAM
- Linux Kernel 2.6.21.3
- Slackware 11.0

Any ideas? I'm going insane over here trying to figure this out. The
same server also runs MySQL and Cacti. Cacti graphs roughly the same
amount of services and the same number of hosts. For the tuning of
nagios, I have cacti completely turned off.
