Has any one seen this before and is it a known bug? I have attempted to remove
the service check and recreate it but it hasn't fixed the issue.

[Nagios-users] Is it possible to recieve a single global notification for all checks?

2013-08-31 Thread Alex Flex
Hello Nginx,

I have a single host, and dozens of services of the same type (http
check) monitored.

When a service goes down it is normal for others to report CRITICAL at
the same time. Intead of generating a notification for each independant
service can I have a SINGLE email consolidate the report on whats on
CRITICAL?

Perhaps using a global handler, however how would this work with the
part of one email per minute if my understanding is that the global
event handler runs independtly for each service?

Anything creative is welcome.

[Nagios-users] About the global handler.

2013-08-31 Thread Alex Flex
Hello,

Iam trying to use a global handler so that it invokes a failover by
distinguishing first if the host is CRITICAL, if its then it should
failover all services under that host and ignore the number of services
of that particular host in trouble and NOT try to failover specific
services.

If specific services of that host are in trouble AND the host state is
OK then it should failover only the specific services.

Is this something that can be achieved by a global host handler? If yes
how? according to what i read i cannot pass specific service arguments
to the global handler. It only gets fed the nagios macros so it cannot
distinguish what action to take according to the circumstances.

Your solution was to create a single check that at the same time
performs various checks, similar to the check_multi . However I need
each check to be an independent check :( Any other suggestion is
appreciated.

[Nagios-users] Event Handler for a group of services.

2013-08-15 Thread Alex Flex
Hello Nagios Community,

I have a host that has a series of checks (application checks, network
stack checks, and others), i understand that event handlers can be set
for specific services but what occurs when I want to execute an event
handler based on a selective group of service states, or perhaps an
event handler for a service group?

If I assign the event handler for the host, its pointless because the
actual host check can be OK but still have speific service checks in
progress.

Thanks for the feedback

Guys,

  Those messages didn't show up in /var/log/messages ? That's normally

 No, they didn't show up in syslog, but perhaps they should have.

 What application are you using to monitor syslog log messages such as

 SEC[1] works really well. You set it up as an in-line destination on your
 central loghost, with actions that send events back to nagios via NSCA.

 -tt

Guys, thanks for the tips. These both look good. I'll investigate both of them.

[Nagios-users] Plugin for dmesg/kernel messages

2013-07-15 Thread Alex
Hi,

I've located a few plugins that I could modify, but does someone know
of a plugin that can be used to monitor dmesg for general kernel
issues?

I noticed a ext4 filesystem issue on one of the servers, and realized
I should be monitoring for kernel crashes, oops, or other failures.

I realize there's already plugins for monitoring disk activity -- I'm
looking for something specifically to monitor kernel messages.

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: [Nagios-users] Disabling a host from all checks

2013-07-03 Thread Alex
Hi,

 I don't know how kosher this is, but I worked around that issue by disabling
 active checks and disabling notifications, then entering a
 passive check that showed the host as up. That way I wouldn't see reports
 about the downed system until I re-enabled active checks.

Did that work for all services on that host as well? Or was it
necessary to create a passive check (or even possible) for each
service?

Thanks,
Alex

No, this is different. This is simply to disable the active checks and

Re: [Nagios-users] Disabling a host from all checks

2013-07-02 Thread Alex
Hi,

 I recently had to do the same on one of my Nagios systems (v3.5.0 on a
 Centos 6.4 host). From the Nagios Admin web page (xx.xx.xx.xx/nagios),
 select Hosts, select the host that was removed. On the right side of the
 page is a list of Host Commands where you can 'Disable active checks of this
 host' and 'Disable notifications for this host'. The same can be performed
 for services and checks, but I am not sure if they are needed once you
 disable active checks. I didn't go that far when I removed the host.

Thanks for the info. I've done this, but the host and all services
were still being reported as down. This was particularly evident in
the firefox nagios monitor plugin, so the host is still reported being
available for status by nagios.

It was indeed necessary for me to remove the configuration for this
host, including my escalations, services, and hosts file.

Had I stopped monitoring it before the host went down, none of that
would have been necessary, but there was no way to bring it back up.

Thanks,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Disabling a host from all checks

2013-06-30 Thread Alex
Hi,

I have a nagios-3.4.4 system on fc17 that's working properly. I
physically removed a server without scheduling downtime or indicating
to nagios to disable all checks.

Now that the server has been removed, I'm receiving these constant
alerts saying the host is down and connection refused on all
services.

How can I remove this host from nagios checks without having to edit
the configuration file and removing all references to the hostname in
all of them?

I'm hoping there's an easier way. If it was possible, I'd put the host
back into production, let nagios check all the services, then mark the
system to not check this host, but I can't.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

 Greetings, all. I’ve googled the subject above and evaluated the answers

 I’m running Nagios Core 3.2.1 on RedHat 5.8. This installation has been
 running for a few years, I just inherited it’s care and maintenance
 recently. On one of my monitored servers I write a script “checkRAID.sh”
 that calls another piece of code, looks at the results, and returns either
 a 0 or a 2 (the result will always be either good or critical, depending on
 whether the RAID controller is unhappy).

 Nagios runs as user “nagios”. The remote machine is configured to allow
 user “nagios” to log in without a password, using a key pair. This works.*

 That “Check failed” line is what’s written to stdout just before returning
 an exit code of 2. This shows me that the remote script is working fine,
 and that the local nagios user is able to execute it with no problems.
 However, once I add an entry to services.cfg to tie this service check to
 my remote host and give it time to run the command, when I look at nagios’

Re: [Nagios-users] Escalation issues

2013-05-07 Thread Alex
Hi,

 I have also interval_length=60 in nagios.cfg. I don't understand why
 admins-escal isn't consulted after three consecutive attempts at
 communicating with the service. What am I doing wrong?

 This is a silly question, but are there contacts who are members of the
 admins-escal group? And do they have service_notification_options that
 overlap the ones defined in your escalation?

 I haven't tried using templates for escalations yet. Have you tried defining
 an escalation without using a template?

 Does the config page for service escalations show anything? The URL would
 end up being something like:
 http://your_nagios_host/nagios/cgi-bin/config.cgi?type=serviceescalationsexpand=mailhost

Thanks for the info. I've ended up almost completely rebuilding the
configuration, trying to understand how it all works and get
notifications working, and stop alerting either too late or too many
times.

I have something that at least works now, but I'm continuing to make
changes to improve it.

Thanks again,
Alex

[Nagios-users] clamav socket check times out

2013-05-07 Thread Alex
Hi,

I have an fc17 box with nagios-3.4.4 and using the clamd plugin, among
others, to check on my systems. For some reason the clamd plugin very
frequently times out when run through nrpe:

command[check_procs_clamd]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_clamd -H
/var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock -t 15

Even with a timeout period of 15s, it still very frequently reports
the following:

[1367955948] SERVICE ALERT:
mail01;PROCS-clamd;CRITICAL;SOFT;1;CRITICAL - Socket timeout after 15
seconds
[1367955958] SERVICE ALERT: mail01;PROCS-clamd;OK;SOFT;2;CLAMD OK -
3.568 second response time on socket /var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock
[PONG]

This occurs on multiple servers, not just this mail01 system, and even
when the system is idle. The plugin comes from the package
nagios-plugins-tcp-1.4.16-5.fc17.x86_64 and I'm using clamav-0.97.7.

What is the procedure the check_clamd process uses to query the socket?

What could be the reason for this timeout occurring so frequently?
Could it be an issue with the maximum number of connections for clamd?

Any time I run the command manually, it succeeds, and comes back instantly.

Thanks for any ideas,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Variables for determining time before first alert

2013-05-07 Thread Alex
Hi all,

I'm trying to configure a nagios server that was set up a long time
ago, but has never worked correctly. I'm trying to understand all the
variables that are involved in controlling the time before the first
notify-by-email alert is sent for a regular service and one that I've
configured as critical.

Is max_check_attempts the number of iterations it will perform the
host/service check for each iteration of the check_interval period? In
other words, if I set max_check_attempts to 5, and my interval_length
is 60, does that mean it's 5 minutes before the first soft failure is
generated?

How does the notification_interval in the regular service definition
compare with the notification_interval specified in one of the
serviceescalation sections? In other words, if I set
notification_interval to 10 minutes for regular services, and
notification_interval to 5 minutes for escalated services, will I
receive two notifications? I realize I could try this, but there seems
to be so many other variables involved that I'd like to be sure my
understanding is correct.

Thanks,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Help reviewing current configuration

2013-05-07 Thread Alex
Hi all,

I've worked hours and hours on trying to get these notifications
working properly and I'm still confused. I really hoped someone could
review my configuration to determine where I might be doing something
wrong, and provide any suggestions for improvement. I have a handful
of critical servers that I'd like to be notified by within two or
three minutes of there being a problem, such as the web server having
been stopped.

It's my understand that I first define this as a service, while in
parallel define varying types of escalations - a regular escalation
and a critical escalation. Both of these rely on checking the host for
service issues max_check_attempts times, and when that number is
reached, an event trigger occurs and the service is escalated. Perhaps
I don't understand the link between how a service is in a failed state
and a serviceescalation directive is initiated. How are they connected
or linked?

If I have the first notification for an escalated service set to 1,
and the last set to 10, with a notification_interval set to 2, there
would effectively be two minutes between each notification, correct?

I've included a few macros that I've built below, along with the
services to which they belong, and hoped someone could review them to
see where I might be going wrong.

With the configuration below, it seems I'm only notified at the 10m
mark, which I guess is the notification_interval set in the
standard-service-24x7 macro. The service never seems to escalate to
critical-services, where I should receive an alert after every second
check of the host.

define service {
namestandard-service-24x7
active_checks_enabled   1
passive_checks_enabled  1
parallelize_check   1
obsess_over_service 1
check_freshness 0
notifications_enabled   1
event_handler_enabled   1
flap_detection_enabled  1
process_perf_data   1
retain_status_information   1
retain_nonstatus_information1
max_check_attempts  4
check_interval  1
retry_interval  1
is_volatile 0
check_period24x7
contact_groups  admins
notification_interval   10
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
register0
}

# service for standard-service-24x7 macro above
define service {
use standard-service-24x7
host_name   dedicatedtech
service_description SMTP
check_command   check_smtp
}

# escalation definition for a critical service
# admins-escal has several email addresses defined in it
define serviceescalation {
namecritical-services
first_notification  1
last_notification   10
contact_groups  admins-escal
notification_interval   2
register0
}

# test critical services
define serviceescalation {
use critical-services
host_name   beast
service_description PROCS-qemu
}

Is there other information I should provide to better troubleshoot this?

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Nagios-users] Variables for determining time before first alert

2013-05-07 Thread Alex
Hi,

 Hi, I apologize for the terse reply, but I think you will find all the
 answers to your questions here -

 http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/objectdefinitions.html

Thanks for your help. I've actually read quite a bit of that, and I'm
still confused. It wasn't clear that max_check_attempts is the number
of attempts that are made for each iteration, before another alert is
triggered.

The check_interval is the number of minutes between each check.

The notification_interval is how often to send an alert to an admin
about a change in status of a service.

Does that sound correct?

I still don't understand this part:

 How does the notification_interval in the regular service definition
 compare with the notification_interval specified in one of the
 serviceescalation sections? In other words, if I set
 notification_interval to 10 minutes for regular services, and
 notification_interval to 5 minutes for escalated services, will I
 receive two notifications? I realize I could try this, but there seems
 to be so many other variables involved that I'd like to be sure my
 understanding is correct.

What is the point of the notification_interval in a standard service
definition? How is it triggered to use one of the escalation macros?

If I have notification_interval specified in the escalation sections,
I would think it would override the higher setting?

Thanks,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Escalation issues

2013-05-05 Thread Alex
Hi all,

I have a working nagios system on fc17, but I don't think I have the
escalations configured properly. I have the following service
templates defined:

At what point are the services converted to being escalated services
in my sample below?

define service {
namestandard-service-24x7
active_checks_enabled   1
passive_checks_enabled  1
parallelize_check   1
obsess_over_service 1
check_freshness 0
notifications_enabled   1
event_handler_enabled   1
flap_detection_enabled  1
process_perf_data   1
retain_status_information   1
retain_nonstatus_information1
max_check_attempts  5

# number of min between checks
normal_check_interval   4
retry_check_interval1
is_volatile 0
check_period24x7
contact_groups  admins

# re-notify every ten minutes
notification_interval   10
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
register0
}

define serviceescalation {
namecritical-services
first_notification  3
last_notification   10
#contact_groups linux-admins,noc-admins,techs-phones
contact_groups  admins-escal
notification_interval   10
register0
}

I also have a number of services configured such as this:

define service {
use standard-service-24x7
host_name   mailhost
service_description MAILQ-pre
check_command   check-host-alive
}

define serviceescalation {
use critical-services
host_name   mailhost
service_description MAILQ-pre
}

I have also interval_length=60 in nagios.cfg. I don't understand why
admins-escal isn't consulted after three consecutive attempts at
communicating with the service. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Different notifications for different services

2013-03-28 Thread Alex Trifonov
Hello, all!

I'm using Nagios 3.3.1, and trying to setup different notifications for
different hosts and services.

I have 2 types of notifications, via sms and e-mail and I don't want to
receive sms about paper jam in my printer, but i want to receive e-mail
about it simultaneously I want to receive sms notifications from my
web-servers for all services.

Unfortunately directives host_notification_command and
service_notification_commands is described only for contacts, but not
for hosts and services.

Could you help me to resolve this problem?

P.S.: Sorry for my pure English.

 You can use this trick:

 I use it to massively add service dependencies for all NRPE based service

 Correct. The former will cause notifications to remain disabled until
 told otherwise; the latter only for as long as specified. You should
 read up on the difference between Fixed and Flexible scheduled downtime
 while you’re at it.

 If you want service/host checks disabled, you need to select that option

 Reading for the first time the docs it seems that these 2 options do the

 Is the only difference that the first one disable the notification

 Both do not stop the service checks.

Re: [Nagios-users] About nsca and nrpe...

2012-11-06 Thread Alex Griffin
  Does anyone have an idea of why it's not possible to send passive
  results over nrpe ???

NRPE is not designed for passive checks. The reason you can't send
passive results over NRPE is because the only communication NRPE has
with Nagios is through the output and exit code of check_nrpe. In other
words, it does not submit the results directly to Nagios, rather it
relies on Nagios running the command directly (the definition of an
active check).

NSCA is a solution for passive monitoring. You mentioned it in your
subject line but not your message body: is there some reason you don't
want to use NSCA, or something you're confused about regarding it?

Re: [Nagios-users] Creating a criteria:

2012-08-01 Thread Alex Griffin
No, this will only check once every 5 minutes. The max_check_attempts
directive is for retrying after a failed check. You need to find or
write a plugin that does all 10 requests itself and then set it up as a
*passive* check in Nagios. I believe it must be passive, otherwise
Nagios will kill it for running too long.

 Hi all, I'm new to nagios. And trying to figure out how do I do this :

 Response time 2s for 10 continuous requests in a 5 minutes.

 If this is the case then I need to create a alert.

 I defined a template for this :

 define host{

   host_nametest

   ;other stufs

  ;check command so that response time is less than 2s

   check_interval  5

   retry_interval  1

   max_check_attempts  10

   check_period24x7

 For my criteria :

 Response time 2s for 10 continuous requests in a 5 minutes.

 Is that correct?

 Thanks in advance.

Nagios Core will still read its configuration from text files, but
there's always something like NagiosQL for managing your configuration

[Nagios-users] Converting log format for legacy scripts

2012-07-14 Thread Alex
Hi,

I have a few legacy scripts that I'd rather not have to update, and
wondered if it was possible to somehow control the output of the hosts
that were being monitored?

The old scripts were written for version 1.0 of nagios, probably six
years ago. The format looks like this:

[1342314314]
SERVICE;rogue;PROCS-httpd;OK;1/5;HARD;1342314216;1342314396;ACTIVE;1;1;1;1342292439;0;OK;124332003;0;540;0;0;0;1;0;0;1;0;0.00;0;1;1;1;OK
- 16 processes running with command name httpd, UID = 48 (webd)

Perhaps there's a perl module that will parse the existing format and
put each value in a variable that I can then output to the correct
format that I need?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Nagios-users] Disk Partitioning for Nagios

2012-06-08 Thread Alex Griffin
I don't think it's really necessary to have a separate /usr or /boot
partition. GRUB2 can boot from LVM partitions these days. 2 GB also
seems excessive for a /tmp partition.

In all honesty it doesn't actually matter as much as a lot of people
think it does. There are some setups which are obviously brain dead, but
much of it comes down to personal preference too. Using LVM will allow
you to flexibly change your partitions as your needs shift, so you
should definitely use that if you're unsure of your needs.

 Hi Faiz,

 the more important things are about database and performace. If you are
 going to work with NDOUtils for example and MySQL, the best option is to
 create a new and independent mount point depending on the data retention
 that you need. Then /var/lib/mysql could be a good option.

 For performance, if you are going to work with pnp4nagios for example, a
 good option is an independent mount point for /var/lib/pnp4nagios.

 And for global configuration, you can create the following for example:

 250MB - /boot  (out of the LVM)
 LVM
XXX - swap (depending on your requirements)
2GB  /tmp
10GB /usr
8GB   /var
4GB /home (it depends on that you want to do)
XXX /opt (if you don't need more external software, probably
 you don't need it with a big reserve)
2GB  /

50GB  /var/lib/mysql
30GB  /var/lib/pnp4nagios

 Also, if you are going to work with SVN to save the .cfg files versions,
 you probably need a new mount point for this to separate it.

 This is a example, it depends on each time. If you can, separete the
 important things in different mount points and maintain an standard
 operating system partitioning.

 Best regards,
  Víctor.

A quick search turned up 2 plugins that would do the job on Linux,
check_open_files and check_linux_stats.

 No. That would be akin to building in a secure shell client into Nagios,

Re: [Nagios-users] check_procs and negating regex in --ereg-argument-array

2012-05-23 Thread Alex Griffin
Okay, then it appears check_procs does not support that syntax. Negation
of longer strings like that requires a backtracking implementation of
regular expressions (the quotes are there because this kind of regular
expression is actually NOT a regular expression in the strict computer
science sense), and is not supported by most traditional UNIX tools.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's a good way to make this work.
Hopefully someone else can come up with an alternative solution.

You keep putting commas in your example output, but as someone else

 The perfdata string is generated in a loop by appending an item for each
 DHCP pool I am monitoring. When we come to print the variable, it seems
 to get ignored (hence the pipe is printed but nothing else).

 If I statically set the variable to have the same value as the perfdata
 ought to, then the plugin works properly, and the full perfdata string
 is returned.

 So what is it about printing this variable through NRPE that breaks it?
 I am totally confused by this. Happy to send my plugin source code to

 Too much data?

 Are you using SSL?

 I don't know that I've seen this behavior before - it's always
 been *invalid* perfdata that have caused this issue for me.

 I am using SSL in production, although not for testing. Both cases
 return the same truncated results.

 The total status + performance data returned from this plugin is only
 500-and-something bytes, less than the limits for NRPE that I'd heard about.

 I'm wondering if it might be something to do with the embedded perl
 interpreter. Does NRPE use this to execute perl-flavoured plugins?

 Thanks for your help,

Re: [Nagios-users] printing info from nagios db check script

2012-05-14 Thread Alex Griffin
I haven't fully grokked the script you posted, but I do have a few
comments. You should be quoting every single variable which is set by an
external command, unless you have some reason not to. Most unquoted
variables are bugs just waiting to show up in unexpected ways. You
should also quote any variables which are set in other ways if there is
any chance of them containing bad characters like spaces. Personally I
just quote everything to avoid having to think about the issue.

Second, you could try adding 'set -x' to the top of your script to add
debugging output and hopefully help you find problems.

   It comes from the fact that the check is attempting to report two
 tablespaces and that's why the formatting is falling apart.

   I altered the print statement of the loop a little bit and saw the
 important difference:

   while i=$($sqlplus -s -l $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID

  if [ $TBLSPACE ]
  then
 echo NOK  $TBLSPACE  is at   $PCT  $FREE/$TOTAL
 exit 2
  else
 echo All OK
  exit 0
  fi
 done

 Now outputs:

 [db07-dc2:~] root% /opt/nagios/libexec/check_qaecom1_tablespace.sh
 NOK BAM_USER_INDX_LG MLBDATASM  is at  97.50% 95.85% 820 340/32764 8191

 So what I need to try and figure out is how to print additional tablespaces
 that meet the threshold levels and have the output make sense visually. I
 will keep working on this, but would welcome any input you might have.

 Subject: printing info from nagios db check script

 Hey list,

   I'm having a small but important problem with a script I am writing in
 order to monitor the tablespaces of an oracle database. This is probably more
 of a bash programming issue, but as the ultimate purpose of the script is to
 be a nagios check I am hoping that you won't mind me asking here.

 Just to give you a brief overview of what I am experiencing, I'd like to
 start by giving you the output of a couple runs of the script and a couple
 snippets of code.

 First:

 [db07-dc2:~] root% /opt/nagios/libexec/check_qaecom1_tablespace.sh
 /opt/nagios/libexec/check_qaecom1_tablespace.sh: line 60: [:
 BAM_USER_INDX_LG: unary operator expected
 All OK

 is mainly achieved through this loop:

 while i=$($sqlplus -s -l $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID
 @/opt/bin/ops/mlb_tablespace.sql | awk '{print $1}') j=$($sqlplus -s -l
 $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID  @/opt/bin/ops/mlb_tablespace.sql | awk '{print $3}')
 k=$($sqlplus -s -l $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID  @/opt/bin/ops/mlb_tablespace.sql |
 awk '{print $2}') l=$($sqlplus -s -l $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID
 @/opt/bin/ops/mlb_tablespace.sql | awk '{print $4}')
 do
  TBLSPACE=$i
  PCT=$j
  FREE=$k
  TOTAL=$l
  if [  $TBLSPACE ]
  then
 echo NOK $TBLSPACE is at $PCT $FREE/$TOTAL
 exit 2
  else
 echo All OK
  exit 0
  fi
 done

 But as you can see a 'unary operator' error is produced by this code. As you
 can probably tell, all it does is execute a few sqlplus commands (with the
 SQL contained in a separate file) and assign them to a few variables. It
 incorrectly produces an 'OK' state.

 But if I try to fix the 'unary operator' error by putting the TBLSPACE
 variable in quotes, the result changes from ALL OK to showing some output
 and (correctly) produces an error state:

 [db07-dc2:~] root% /opt/nagios/libexec/check_qaecom1_tablespace.sh
 NOK BAM_USER_INDX_LG
 MLBDATASM is at 97.50%
 95.85% 820
 340/32764
 8191

 while i=$($sqlplus -s -l $USERNAME/$PASS@$SID

 Too much data?

 I don't know that I've seen this behavior before - it's always

 I am using SSL in production, although not for testing. Both cases
 return the same truncated results.

 The total status + performance data returned from this plugin is only
 500-and-something bytes, less than the limits for NRPE that I'd heard about.

 I'm wondering if it might be something to do with the embedded perl

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios based distributed monitoring systems out there?

2012-05-04 Thread Alex Griffin
We've just released a beta of NRDS here at Nagios Enterprises, which
adds exactly that functionality to our commercial product, Nagios XI. It
should also be much cheaper than OpsView.

Check it out here:

 Slave servers are placed at remote locations to do active polling and results
 are returned to the master.
 Slave servers initiate ssh session to master and open up reverse tunnel back
 to itself.
 So data from slaves comes in via port 22, config data is pushed out to slaves
 over reverse ssh port.

 The cool thing is we don't have to deal with opening up ssh on a bunch of
 remote networks.
 As long as SSH is allowed out from remote networks and we allow in SSH from
 the remote networks everything just works.

 Other distributed setups I had seen had to have direct ssh access out from
 master to slave.

 Opsview Community edition was really a great value, but the move to
 enterprise edition would be a big cost increase, so I figured it was worth
 asking about distributed setup in other nagios based products.

 Compile status-txt.c to create status-txt.cgi, this cgi accepts
 exactly the same URL parameters that status.cgi accepts, and filters
 its output appropriately.
 In this version, it accepts almost all the arguments passed in the URL
 which status.cgi accepts except style, navbarsearch, columns and
 noheader.
 And we will add more functionalities in the next version.

 The status-txt.cgi will returns service data that appears in the
 status table of status.cgi as host_ip   host_status
 [service:service_status;..], not includes the top portion of the
 page, eg:
 196.0.0.1  UPHTTP_80:OK;
 196.0.0.2  UPDB_PORT_3306:OK;DB_PORT_3307:OK;
 And you can use some arguments to filter its output, such as

 Hi, hoping someone may be able to help with this odd problem running

 I am running a nagios3 server on ubuntu 10.04 server (nagios3

 2.12-4ubuntu1.10.10.1, nagios-plugins  1.4.14-5ubuntu3)

 Have these both basically up and running, and the server is able to run a
 check_disk command on the npre server and receives results.

 For a check_load command, however, the status information is '(No output
 returned from plugin)'.

 I have looked extensively on the web for this, and it appears there are a
 number of reasons this may happen.

 On the server, if I run
 sudo su - nagios -c /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H 10.41.129.36 -c
 check_load
 there is nothing returned.

 If I change the user from nagios to peter, then I get the expected response.

 On the nrpe server, the same thing is happening. If I run
 sudo su - nagios -c /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_load  -w 15,10,5 -c
 30,25,20
 there is nothing returned. If I change the user to peter it returns the
 expected output.

 I've tried making the plugins all owned by nagios:nagios, that doesn't help.
 I've tried adding a line for nagios to sudoers file and then adding the sudo
 command prefix, that doesn't fix it when invoking the command on the nagios
 server. I've also tried adding the nagios user to the admin group and that
 doesn't help.

 I've enabled the debugging on the nrpe server, and for the command from the
 nagios server, I see the connection and request in syslog when the user is
 peter, but no such request when the user is nagios. Neither of the local
 commands generate any syslog output.

 It is difficult to understand why this command, check_load, on the nrpe
 server is returning output for users 'peter' and 'root' but not for user
 'nagios' when 'nagios' owns the executable.

 When I check executing the check_disk command locally on the nrpe server with
 sudo su - nagios -c /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 20% -c 10% -p
 /dev/sda1
 it works and returns a report.

 Curiously, if I change the nagios user to have a login shell, such as
 /bin/bash, on the nrpe server, then the check_load command is returning
 output, though still doesn't work from the nagios server. In neither case,
 however, does the nagios user have a password.

 Both the check_load and check_disk plugins are owned by nagios:nagios and
 have -rwxr-xr-x permissions, so what is the difference?

 Any suggestions appreciated.

 cheers,
 Peter

[Nagios-users] Timeout and critical error false alarms

2012-04-20 Thread Alex
Hi,

I have a few fc16 boxes and often times alerts are generated for
timeouts while connecting to a remote service on a client such as
clamd or smtpd:

PROCS CRITICAL: 0 processes with command name 'smtpd', UID = 89 (postfix)

Why is it that this happens? It doesn't happen all the time. I know
there are processes running with this command name, so not sure why
this alert would be generated.

It most often happens for me with smtpd and clamd. Is there a way to
extend the timeout, or enable some further debugging to troubleshoot
this?

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Nagios-users] Timeout and critical error false alarms

2012-04-20 Thread Alex
Hi,

 How are you connecting to these boxes (what check commands are you using)?

For clamd, I'm using check_nrpe!check_procs_clamd on the nagios side
and the following on the client side:

command[check_procs_clamd]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_clamd -H
/var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock

For smtpd, the nagios side is the same, and the client side is:

command[check_procs_smtpd]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_procs -w
1:120 -c 1:140 -C smtpd -u postfix

Thanks,

I use Smokeping for checking network latency, integrated with Nagios

 The application we're trying to monitor also doesn't make use of basic

 tie-in with the other two plugins mentioned above to enable us to

As far as I know, netrc doesn't help with cookie-based authentication,
which is what he was asking for. I'm sure there are plugins out there
which handle cookies fine, but he'll need something like selenium for
measuring browser rendering times. And if he's already using selenium he
might as well use it for the authentication too.

(Also, I meant to say It *can't* do in my last email, rather than It do)

 check_ssl-cert is a generic SSL checker - for cases where you're running

 certificate chain report. It'll give WARNING and CRITICAL messages about
 expiry time for all certificates in the chain, and it'll handle STARTTLS
 (in-band SSL initiation as opposed to a dedicated port) correctly for
 SMTP, POP3 and IMAP.

 check_alldisks_ide_smart is a wrapper for checkdisk_ide_smart that'll
 run the latter plugin against all disks in a system (handy for mdraid
 boxes, or newer Linux machines where you can't be sure of a disk's
 device path).

[Nagios-users] status.cgi 500 error

2012-04-05 Thread Gantz Alex
Hello guys!

We have problems with nagios classic web interface.
Often there is an error 500 when accessing status.cgi.

FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p6 amd64

In the server logs: Premature end of script headers: status.cgi

The file objects.cache is updated quite frequently, because we often (10-20

The file is located on the ramdisk. The size of the disk is much higher

Is there any patch that prevents mapping of the objects.cache file in the

 alias  No notifications 00:30-6:30
 sunday 00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 monday 00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 tuesday00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 wednesday  00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 thursday   00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 friday 00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00
 saturday   00:00-00:29,06:31-24:00

Then in the appropriate host definitions add 'check_period exclude_nights'.

 These machines are not under any SLA and often reboot during the night
 for various reasons and I’m done with waking up at all hours for these
 non-critical servers!

 What is the quickest way for me to exclude these 7 hosts from notifying
 during these hours whilst leaving all other servers at 24x7?

 Ive had a read the nagios docs but it didn’t really help me as I didn’t
 really understand it.

 I have edited my server.cfg to show the scenario I want to achieve and
 that can be found at the link below.

 The layout etc is identical to my live configs, I have just edited the
 number of hosts/names/contacts etc (the 3 hosts named NOT CRITICAL are
 the example for the “7 hosts” I first talked about)

 What is the quickest and most effective way for me to keep checking ALL
 my servers 24x7 and notifying 24x7, BUT exclude 7 particular servers
 from checks/notifications between 00:30-06:30 every night?

Re: [Nagios-users] About check_by_ssh

2012-02-24 Thread Alex Griffin
check_by_ssh doesn't check the hostname using ssh's config. Perhaps it
should, but looking through the source it looks like the error is coming
from this function, which is actually a common function amongst several
nagios plugins (located in netutils.h):

 void
 host_or_die(const char *str)
 {
 if(!str || (!is_addr(str)  !is_hostname(str)))
 usage_va(_(Invalid hostname/address - %s), str);
 }

Since it doesn't look like your machine is accessible outside of a local
network, you could set up a proper proxy or vpn or something within the
network with a public hostname. Then use check_by_ssh with the local IP,
e.g. 192.168.0.2

Nagios XI ships with NRPE v2.12, and some wizards may rely on newer
features or bugfixes than you'll get in v2.0. If for some reason you
must use an older version, you probably won't run into too much trouble.
However, I really question why you would want to ignore 8 years worth of

Re: [Nagios-users] Howto monitor udp ports using nagiosxi wizard

2012-02-24 Thread Alex Griffin
The send string is a raw string to send over udp, and should speak the
protocol of whatever service you're trying to check. The expect string
is a substring to match in the response you get. It's not very
user-friendly and doesn't work well with binary protocols, but it's
fairly flexible. You just need to know something about the underlying
protocol of what you're monitoring.

 You have to enter the IP of your network interface connected to the rest of

Yes, I was experimenting and realized this afterwards.

The real problem turned out to be an incorrect firewall rule blocking access.

The problem I'm still having now, however, is with logging on the
client. I have debug=1, but there is nothing written to syslog. It
writes the startup messages, but never any messages indicating the
server had queried it:

[Nagios-users] Logging issues

2011-11-09 Thread Alex
Hi,
I have a fedora15 server as a client and another fedora15 server as a
server and having some trouble with connection refused messages, but
don't see anything in the logs to indicate what the problem might be.

It seems all the nrpe services are being rejected, despite nrpe
running successfully:

Nov  9 23:40:18 fc14 nrpe[2157]: INFO: SSL/TLS initialized. All
network traffic will be encrypted.
Nov  9 23:40:18 fc14 nrpe[2158]: Starting up daemon
Nov  9 23:40:18 fc14 nrpe[2158]: Listening for connections on port 5666
Nov  9 23:40:18 fc14 nrpe[2158]: Allowing connections from:
127.0.0.1,192.168.1.100,64.XX.YY.2

I can tcpdump traffic from 64.XX.YY.2, so Im confident it is reaching
the server and no firewall rules are involved. Other services, such as
checking port 25, work successfully.

How can I configure nrpe to log attempts to communicate with it to the
logs? I've set debug=1 and log_facility=daemon, but it still doesn't
record any activity.

I've included my /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg file from the client below in

 Alex

 I'm checking remote clamd.amavisd processes using check_clamd nrpe via
 the following:

 On the remote servers in /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg:

 command[check_clamd]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_clamd -H
 /var/run/clamd/clamd.sock

 Then from the nagios server defining a service to call this:

 check_command check_nrpe!check_clamd

Perfect, thanks. I should have realized there would be a check_clamd
plugin (from nagios-plugins-tcp-1.4.15-4.fc15.x86_64 in my case).

Thanks everyone for the other tips as well. They will be helpful in the future.
Best,
Alex

I should add that in my specific case, I used the following:

/var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock

This failed with permission denied because /var/spool/amavisd was
inaccessible to user nagios.

I've changed the permissions to 711 so user nagios can access the
directory which is owned by user amavis. Is this correct, or is it
preferrable to add user nagios to the amavis group, or somehow run
check_clamd as user amavis?

Thanks again,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Monitoring clamd.amavisd

2011-10-18 Thread Alex
Hi,

I need to monitor the clamd.amavisd binary, but having difficulty with
the check_procs command. When using the following check_procs, it
isn't able to identify any running processes:

# /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_procs -w 1: -c 1: -C clamd.amavisd -u amavis
PROCS CRITICAL: 0 processes with command name 'clamd.amavisd', UID =
496 (amavis)

However, the process is there:

# ps ax|grep clam
 1066 ?Ssl1:13 clamd.amavisd -c /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf
--pid /var/run/clamd.amavisd/clamd.pid

If I change the check_procs to just look for clamd, it matches, but
it also matches clamdscan, which also runs periodically, and I don't
want it to do that.

Do you have any suggestions for what the problem may be? Is it because
of the dot between clamd.amavisd?

Thanks for any ideas.
Best regards,
Alex

[Nagios-users] Using NagiosStatusLog, or obtaining status info

2011-07-20 Thread Alex
Hi all,

I'm relatively new at using perl, but would like to write a script
that prints the status of all services on all hosts. I thought the
StatusLog module would be good, but it doesn't seem to work with the
latest v3 nagios? It's probably more likely I'm doing something wrong,
but are there any existing examples of how to use it properly with the
latest versions of nagios?

The documentation says Nagios::Service::Status has the following
accessor methods (For V1):, then lists those methods. However, many
return null, such as host_up. Are these methods only available in
nagios v1? If so, how do I get a status of each service for all hosts
and services?

I've tried something as simple as this:

use Nagios::StatusLog;

my $log = Nagios::StatusLog-new(
Filename = /var/log/nagios/status.dat,
Version  = 3.0
);

my @host_info = qw(host_name status modified_attributes check_command
check_period notification_period check_interval retry_interval
event_handler has_been_checked should_be_scheduled
check_execution_time check_latency check_type current_state
last_hard_state last_event_id current_event_id current_problem_id
last_problem_id plugin_output);

foreach my $host ($log-list_hosts) {
   my $obj = $log-host($host);
  foreach my $hostinfo (@host_info) {
print host: $host valname: $hostinfo value: ,$obj-$hostinfo,\n;
  }
}

I'm not sure this is the correct way to do it, and I don't think the
host_info array is complete. Some values also return null.

Can someone supply a more complete example of how to parse the
status.dat file or otherwise obtain real-time information about the
status of every nagios variable for every host?

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Nagios-users] Using NagiosStatusLog, or obtaining status info

2011-07-20 Thread Alex
Hi,

I wanted to add to my previous mail that I just found the list_tags()
function (from StatusLog.pm) which returns the list of all the status
variables from the status.dat file. However, it returns some others
that don't appear in the status.dat file, such as time_up and
time_down.

Where do these variables come from? I'm trying to upgrade a legacy
application that used nagios v1, and I'd like to recreate the
status.log file. This log file contained those variables time_up and
time_down, so I'd like to report the value of those variables in my
new version.

I hope someone can help me to clarify the discrepancies between the v1
log and the v3 log, and how to obtain all the variables and their
values from the v3 log using perl.

 The documentation says Nagios::Service::Status has the following
 accessor methods (For V1):, then lists those methods. However, many
 return null, such as host_up. Are these methods only available in
 nagios v1? If so, how do I get a status of each service for all hosts
 and services?

Thanks,
Alex

 I have found it extremely difficult to get nexsm working with Nagios
 Core. Personally I can't recommend it for that reason and as Tntteam
 mentioned because it seems to be pretty much unsupported now. It's a
 shame because Nexsm can be pretty impressive when it's working.

 Having said all that you could try the official help forum for nexsm
 at http://sourceforge.net/projects/nexsm/forums/forum/558504

 I see there's a Network Hypermap on the roadmap for NagiosXI. It
 might be worth waiting for that rather than expend too much effort on
 Nexsm.  See: http://www.nagios.com/products/nagiosxi/roadmap

[Nagios-users] Help needed: How do you configure dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes.

2010-08-30 Thread Alex Peeters

Help needed: How do you configure dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes.

Example.   -w = 80 -c = 90 during business hours but -w = 90 -c = 95
outsite business hours.

How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on
timeframes: Part II

define service{
 use local-service ; Name
of service template to use
 host_name   localhost
 service_description Current Users
   check_command   check_local_users!20!50
   check_period nonworkhours
   notification_period  nonworkhours
 }

define service{
 use local-service ; Name
of service template to use
 host_name   localhost
 service_description Current Users
   check_command   check_local_users!40!60
   check_period workhours
   notification_period  workhours
 }

In my above example i dit configure the same test twice. The two
timeframes 'nonworkhours' en 'workhours' together equals 24x7

Is this way of configuring allowed. Because this solves my problem.

1) how will the nagios scheduling react on this configuration?

2) how will the display react on this configuration?

# 'workhours' timeperiod definition
define timeperiod{
 timeperiod_name workhours
 alias   Normal Working Hours
 monday  09:00-17:00
 tuesday 09:00-17:00
 wednesday   09:00-17:00
 thursday09:00-17:00
 friday  09:00-17:00
 }

# 'nonworkhours' timeperiod definition
define timeperiod{
 timeperiod_name nonworkhours
 alias   Non-Work Hours
 sunday  00:00-24:00
 monday  00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00
 tuesday 00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00
 wednesday   00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00
 thursday00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00
 friday  00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00
 saturday00:00-24:00
 }

check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the
time period during which active checks of this host can be made.

check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the
time period during which active checks of this service can be made.

If you do not use the check_period directive to specify a timeperiod,
Nagios will be able to schedule active
checks of the host or service anytime it needs to. This is essentially
a 24x7 monitoring scenario.

Specifying a timeperiod in the check_period directive allows you to
restrict the time that Nagios perform
regularly scheduled, active checks of the host or service. When Nagios
attempts to reschedule a host or
service check, it will make sure that the next check falls within a
valid time range within the defined
timeperiod. If it doesn’t, Nagios will adjust the next check time to
coincide with the next valid time in
the specified timeperiod. This means that the host or service may not
get checked again for another hour,
day, or week, etc.

Timeperiods:
Exclusions and Host/Service Checks - There is a bug in the
service/host check scheduling logic
that rears its head when you use timeperiod definitions that use the
excludedirective. The
problem occurs when Nagios Core tries to re-schedule the next check.
In this case, the
scheduling logic may incorrectly schedule the next check further out
in the future than it
should. In essence, it skips over the (missing) logic where it could
determine an earlier possible
time using the exception times. Imperfect Solution: Don’t use
timeperiod definitions that
exclude other timeperods for your host/service check periods. A fix is
being worked on, and
will hopefully make it into a 3.4.x release.

 I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem, no.

 Take a look at the nagios log file which is probably
 /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

 Don't forget my earlier recommendation to validate the Nagios config like
 so:

  /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

 Did you try that, and if so what did it say?

2010-08-25 Thread Alex Dehaini
Hi Ifeanyi,

The issue points to a permission issue - how did you install nagios? Did you
compile it or you used a package manager to install. What environment are
you using? Redhat - Centos? What version of nagios did you install/

[Nagios-users] How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes

2010-08-23 Thread Alex Peeters

Dear Sire,

How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes.

Example.   -w = 80 -c = 90 during business hours but -w = 90 -c = 95
outsite business hours.

How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on
timeframes: Part II

define service{
 use local-service ; Name
of service template to use
 host_name   localhost
 service_description Current Users
   check_command   check_local_users!20!50
   check_period nonworkhours
   notification_period  nonworkhours
 }

define service{
 use local-service ; Name
of service template to use
 host_name   localhost
 service_description Current Users
   check_command   check_local_users!40!60
   check_period workhours
   notification_period  workhours
 }

# 'workhours' timeperiod definition
define timeperiod{
 timeperiod_name workhours

# 'nonworkhours' timeperiod definition

 }

check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the
time period during which active checks of this host can be made.

check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the
time period during which active checks of this service can be made.

If you do not use the check_period directive to specify a timeperiod,
Nagios will be able to schedule active
checks of the host or service anytime it needs to. This is essentially
a 24x7 monitoring scenario.

Specifying a timeperiod in the check_period directive allows you to
restrict the time that Nagios perform
regularly scheduled, active checks of the host or service. When Nagios
attempts to reschedule a host or
service check, it will make sure that the next check falls within a
valid time range within the defined
timeperiod. If it doesn’t, Nagios will adjust the next check time to
coincide with the next valid time in
the specified timeperiod. This means that the host or service may not
get checked again for another hour,
day, or week, etc.

Timeperiods:
Exclusions and Host/Service Checks - There is a bug in the
service/host check scheduling logic
that rears its head when you use timeperiod definitions that use the
excludedirective. The
problem occurs when Nagios Core tries to re-schedule the next check.
In this case, the
scheduling logic may incorrectly schedule the next check further out
in the future than it
should. In essence, it skips over the (missing) logic where it could
determine an earlier possible
time using the exception times. Imperfect Solution: Don’t use
timeperiod definitions that
exclude other timeperods for your host/service check periods. A fix is
being worked on, and
will hopefully make it into a 3.4.x release.

check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the
time period during which active checks of this service can be made.

If you do not use the check_period directive to specify a timeperiod,
Nagios will be able to schedule active
checks of the host or service anytime it needs to. This is essentially
a 24x7 monitoring scenario.

Specifying a timeperiod in the check_period directive allows you to
restrict the time that Nagios perform
regularly scheduled, active checks of the host or service. When Nagios
attempts to reschedule a host or
service check, it will make sure that the next check falls within a
valid time range within the defined
timeperiod. If it doesn’t, Nagios will adjust the next check time to
coincide with the next valid time in
the specified timeperiod. This means that the host or service may not
get checked again for another hour,
day, or week, etc.

Timeperiods:
Exclusions and Host/Service Checks - There is a bug in the
service/host check scheduling logic
that rears its head when you use timeperiod definitions that use the
excludedirective. The
problem occurs when Nagios Core tries to re-schedule the next check.
In this case, the
scheduling logic may incorrectly schedule the next check further out
in the future than it
should. In essence, it skips over the (missing) logic where it could
determine an earlier possible
time using the exception times. Imperfect Solution: Don’t use
timeperiod definitions that
exclude other timeperods for your host/service check periods. A fix is
being worked on, and
will hopefully make it into a 3.4.x release.
