Re: [Nagios-users] localhost DOWN messages, return code 127 is out of bounds

What happens when you run it from the command line as the Nagios user?
I had a similar issue that required the check to run as root.

 Hello,

 I'm getting the following alert in email:

 If I go to check the services, everything is green.

 This is coming from a fresh install with nothing special configured.

 I've googled until my eyes glazed over and no one seems to report
 this happening with localhost. I've checked for the plugins,
 checked permissions, etc... The best I can tell, it's all as it
 should be. I'm sure I've missed some simple detail somewhere, but
 it's eluding me at the moment.

 Any help on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

 Below, I've included logfile contents as well as every detail
 I could think of on how the system is setup.

Subject: [Nagios-users] Nagios notifications

Hi --

I apologize in advance as this question is difficult to type without
running around in circles but here goes:

We're having trouble configuring Nagios service notifications to go to
specific contacts for specific hosts.

For instance, we have contact1 who is a member of contactgroup1. We
have host1 who also has a contact group of contactgroup1. That
association is working.

However, we have service1 which runs on host1, host2, and host3, and has
contact groups contactgroup1 and contactgroup2. Whenever host2, which
is not associated with contact1 has a notification for this service,
contact1 is receiving the notification.

How do we limit notifications for service1 to only go to contact1 if the
host having trouble is host1?

Thanks in advance,

Dustin

[Nagios-users] Notification Issues.

2007-07-16 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
HI Everyone,

Hope all is well with all of you, I have a problem that someone might be able
to help. I am running Nagios 2.7 on RHES 4.0.

My problem is that I have several contact groups, and a wrong group is
receiving the notifications. I have looked at the host setup, the service
setup and the templates, they all look like they are set up correctly. AM I
missing something here?

define service{

use ping-service

host_name   co-csm01

service_description REAL-10.129.210.69 XXXMAIL

contact_groups  wan

check_command
check_slbrealstate!2.7.67.80.83.77.65.73.76.10.129.210.69.0!10.129.210.69!10.129.1.1

}

define host{

use core-server

host_name   co-csm01

alias Cisco Load Balancer

address 10.129.208.4

#   parents co6509-1 co6509-2

}

define service{

nameping-service

is_volatile 0

check_period24x7

max_check_attempts  3

normal_check_interval   10

retry_check_interval2

notification_interval   120

notification_period 24x7

notification_optionsc,r

active_checks_enabled   1

passive_checks_enabled  1

parallelize_check   1

obsess_over_service 0

event_handler_enabled   1

flap_detection_enabled  1

process_perf_data   1

retain_status_information   1

retain_nonstatus_information1

}

So the only people that should be notified should be the ones in the wan
group.. but others are getting notified, I just can't place my finger on this
one.

Hello list,

I have been trying to understand the nagios code for a long time. Nagios has a
complex code event thought I understand C.

I would like to add two fields more to show those information in two screens
(extinfo.cgi and status.cgi).

My ideia is quiet simple: type in localhost.conf a text or a simple word and
this same word appears in extinfo.cgi and status.cgi.

Actually I could do it, changing some lines in some files but all the commands
from extinfo screen are not working anymore.

Is there someone who has already done something like this before or has anyone
with some ideia?

Thank you so much for your attention.

[Nagios-users] check_dhcp question...

2007-06-27 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
Hi Everyone,

I am doing a check of the DHCP server and when I run the check_dhcp
manually, I get a reply that there were no DHCP OFFERS.

./check_dhcp -s 10.129.177.16 -r 10.129.177.240

DHCP problem: No DHCPOFFERs were received.

But when I look at my server on the system messages I see the follwing.

Jun 27 12:47:03 co-ops01 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:14:38:bb:fc:21 via
eth0

Jun 27 12:47:04 co-ops01 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.129.177.240 to
00:14:38:bb:fc:21 via eth0

I don't see anything on the Nagios server log..

Any Ideas on what I am doing wrong.

It's about time periods again,

It's 20:00 o'clock right now and I defined a time period like this:

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name night
alias   Check at night only
sunday   22:00-23:00
monday  22:00-23:00

thursday 22:00-23:00
friday  22:00-23:00
saturday 22:00-23:00
}

using this settings, i restarted Nagios and it schedules all plug-ins at
22:00 without interleaving them.

But if i set the timeperiod to:

define timeperiod{
timeperiod_name night
alias  Check at night only
sunday   20:15-21:15
monday  20:15-21:15
tuesday  20:15-21:15

thursday 20:15-21:15
friday  20:15-21:15
saturday 20:15-21:15
}

and restart nagios, on the web interface I can see Nagios interleaving
all the checks right away.

Why if i schedule it couple hours ahead Nagios doesn't interleave the
chekcs but if i schedule it couple minutes ahead, it interleaves all the
check?

these are my configuration:

service_interleave_factor=s
max_service_check_spread=60
service_inter_check_delay_method=s

Re: [Nagios-users] (no subject)

2007-06-20 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
I am so sorry, I did nto have a subject line.

We have a group of exchange servers that are connected to a san, and for
the last few days the san has been dropping, and my users tell me that
the exchange is having problems. I would like to see it there is a way
to check the event.log to check of errors.

Thanks,

Luis

[Nagios-users] Unusual request....

2007-05-25 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
HI All,

I was asked by one of my users to see if there is a way that NAGIOS can
check to see if a certain file was updated with in the last 10 minutes,
and it is not updated then to issue an alert.

Is there a plugging for NAGIOS to handle this? If not any ideas how I
could get this done?

Thanks,

Luis

Hello,

Here you can see short outline of my configuration of hosts,
hostgroups and services:

#v+

define host {
use host-template-a
hostgroups hostgroup-a
hostname server-a
alias server-a
}

define host {
use host-template-b
hostgroups hostgroup-b
hostname server-b
alias server-b
}

define host {
use host-template-c
hostgroups hostgroup-c
hostname server-c
alias server-c
}

define hostgroup {
hostgroup_name hostgroup-a
alias hostgroup-a
}

define hostgroup {
hostgroup_name hostgroup-b
alias hostgroup-b
}

define hostgroup {
hostgroup_name hostgroup-c
alias hostgroup-c
}

define hostgroup {
hostgroup_name hostgroup-all
alias hostgroup-all
hostgroup_members hostgroup-a,hostgroup-b,hostgroup-c
}

define service {
use service-template
hostgroup_name hostgroup-all,!hostgroup-c
service_description Service test
check_command test_command
}
#v-

What I need to do is running Service test for all hosts from
hostgroup-all, excluding hosts belonging to hostgroup-c. But
when I start Nagios and use configuration listed above I see that
Service test is running for all hosts including those from
hostgroup-c.

Would you be so kind and tell me if I have made any mistake in
configuration or there is any bug related to excluding groups?

[Nagios-users] Subgrouping Host groups.

2007-02-16 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
Good Morning all,

I have what might seem like a dumb question. I monitor some 800+ and
last night I was thinking of a way to make my NAGIOS groups more
readable.
I know that the display sorts based on hostgroup_name, Having said
that, I can  name my groups 1-1, 1-2, 1-3,  2-1, 2-2  etc.  I can do
that it is fairly simple. I also found out that you can insert html
tags on the hostgroup alias which make is easy make the Group names
bolded and stick out.

So I would like to do something like

WINDOWS SERVERS
ISHARE
Exchange
Active Directory
File Server
Linux
FTP Server
Web Server

Sun
DNS
DHCP

Cisco
Access Points
Core Switches

Etc..

So my question for all of you have the know how, is there a better way
to do this?

Thanks,

Luis

[Nagios-users] notification question...

2007-01-12 Thread Lacayo, Luis F
HI all,

I have a very strange problem. I just upgrade to NAGIOS 2.6 from a
version 1. (Don't ask please).

On my previous production server, I had the host-notify-by-email command
define as:

define command{
namehost-notify-by-email
command_namehost-notify-by-email
command_line$USER1$/notify-email.pl --HOSTNAME=$HOSTNAME$
--HOSTALIAS=$HOSTALIAS$ --HOSTADDRESS=$HOSTADDRESS$
--LASTSTATECHANGE=$LASTSTATECHANGE$ --TIMET=$TIMET$
--HOSTSTATE=$HOSTSTATE$ --OUTPUT=$OUTPUT$ --DATETIME=$DATETIME$
--NOTIFICATIONTYPE=$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ | /bin/mail -s 'Host $HOSTSTATE$
alert for $HOSTALIAS$! ($HOSTNAME$)' $CONTACTEMAIL$
}

The same as the new production version, however when I get an alert I am
not getting the same information on the email.

The $OUTPUT$ and the $DATETIME$ is not being sent on the email.

It works fine on the previous version.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I am currently monitoring 534 active devices and over 2100 services. I am
thinking of a dell 2950, Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 5140, 4MB Cache, 2.33GHz,
1333MHz FSB with 4G or RAM.

I think that should do it. I might add cacti to this same server.

Think about the amount of services you want to check. I would say if
the amount is gt than 5000 Services = Take the best hardware you can
get for money.

Oh wait... get two of them and send one to me *just kidding*

Without further informations how big your nagios installation is or
should be, it is hard to say what hardware you will need.

Some people say a 64bit arch will improve performance, other say that
parts of nagios wouldn't compile (on a amd 64bit arch - I haven't any
problems)

I would say: take fast harddisks, a huge amount of ram, and actual
cpu's with ht function.

 Thanks in advance.

We have a legacy setup with tru64 hosts that are currently configured
for rsh, not ssh. I've installed the latest and greatest nagios on a
relatively
recent fedora host and have used plugins with ssh in the past. The
problem is that rsh doesn't return status codes properly. Rather, it
returns
only the status code of rsh itself, not the command. A search implies
you just need to echo $? with rsh.

rsh linux to linux, I get this:

linux1 rsh linux1 'date ; echo $?'
Wed Jan  3 15:15:07 EST 2007

and trying to generate an error:
linux1 rsh linux1 'bogus ; echo $?'
bogus; Command not found.
1

So that looks ok but first problem is when I put into nagios commands
define
   rsh $HOSTADDRESS$ 'mycommand; echo $?'
The web page show (No output!)

Is it possible it swallows the quotes?

Further, rsh behaves differently on tru64:

linux1 rsh tru64-host 'date;echo $?'
Variable syntax.

Any ideas for these problems?

Thanks

Error: Could not open command file '/usr/local/nagios/var/rw/nagios.cmd'
for update.

The permissions on the external command file and/or directory may be

An error occurred while attempting to commit your command for

I first went to the nagios.cfg file and confirmed that external commands
were activated, and that the path of the nagios.cmd file,

/usr/local/nagios/var/rw/nagios.cmd was uncommented and correct.

I checked the permissions on the nagios directory and its
subdirectories. The nagios directory is owned by nagios:nagios, and the

permissions on the directory are 777. This is also true for child
directories under the main one. The ../nagios/var/rw directory has the

same owners and permissions, while the nagios.cmd file is owned by
nagios:nagios with the permissions prw-rw.

Has anyone seen this, and can tell me what I need to do to correct it?
