Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios Exploit

2013-01-11 Thread Mike Guthrie
Fixed in the Nagios 3.4.4 release candidate, as well as in the Core 4
trunk. Announced last week:

All,

I have uploaded a release candidate tarball for Nagios Core 3.4.4 to
SourceForge. If you are so inclined, please download a copy from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/nagios/files/nagios-3.x/nagios-3.4.4/
and give it a test run. Any feedback would be appreciated. I plan to

create the release mid-week next week.

The change log is as follows:

* Fixed bug #408: service checks get duplicated on reload (Eric Stanley)
* Fixed bug #401: segmentation fault on Solaris when parsing unknown
timeperiod directives. (Eric Stanley)
* Added NULL pointer checks to CGI code. (Eric Stanley)
* Fixed buffer overflow vulnerability in CGI code. Thanks to Neohapsis
(http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/fulldisclosure/2012-12/0108.html) for
finding this. (Eric Stanley)

Thanks,

Eric

My recommendation was to write a plugin to *detect* multiple parents,

Currently what I observe is whenever I see such sluggishness then I stop
nagios service cleanup checkresult directory and start nagios again.

Can you explain a little bit more on having to clean up the checkresult
directory? You shouldn't ever have to do this manually, Nagios reaps
the results from this directory every X number of seconds as defined in
nagios.cfg. How large is your installation? What are the permissions on
the leftover files in this directory? If the checkresults directory
perpetually grows in the number of files, then that would probably
explain the sluggishness, because directory scan alone would make Nagios
have to work much harder...

However, with your further note above, I don't think you're getting
 multiple daemons running.

Forgive me, I don't recall the full details of your installation -
are you running any sort of NDO module? NDOUtils? Are you processing
perfdata? If so, via what mechanism?

Re: [Nagios-users] Inconsistency of Nagios

2013-01-02 Thread Mike Guthrie
Typically when I've seen behavior like this, it's because there are
multiple parent processes of Nagios running, so both instances are
launching checks, and reaping each others results. Try killing off all
Nagios processes, and then starting it fresh again to see if that
resolves the issue.

/etc/init.d/nagios stop
killall -9 nagios
/etc/init.d/nagios start

Re: [Nagios-users] service checks running too often

2012-12-13 Thread Mike Guthrie
Although some of those start times do seem close together, it's
important to know that the check_interval in Nagios is not necessarily a
hard number. Nagios is continually adjusting and recalculating the check
schedule, so if you need a check to run on a hard 5mn schedule, you
might be better off using cron, and then pushing the result to Nagios
passively.

With that said, access the service details for this service. When new
results come in does the scheduler set the Next Check 5mn out as expected?

Just an FYI, this list is primarily intended for Nagios Core, for Nagios
XI inquiries go ahead and use the XI support forums:

http://support.nagios.com/forum

Nagios XI 2012 Enterprise Edition has the ability to do regular
scheduled reports for almost all of the available reports in the web

[Nagios-users] Nagios 3.4.3 RC tarball

2012-11-13 Thread Mike Guthrie
Grettings!

We're looking to do a new Nagios 3.4.3 tarball to fix some issues that
inadvertently got pulled into the Nagios 3.4.2 release. We put together
a release candidate tarball nagios-3.4.3RC1.tar.gz, and we'd love some
help in testing and verifying against any regressions with this
release. Note that this is still part of the Nagios 3 branch intended
for bug fixes, and should not be confused with the Nagios 4 trunk which
is also under active development. Please let us know of any issues
identified with this current release tarball. The RC tarball is not
recommended for production environments.

RC Tarball:
http://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nagioscore/nagios-3.4.3RC1.tar.gz

Here is the current list of updates for 3.4.3:

3.4.3 - Soon
--
- Reverted squeue changes intended for Nagios 4
- Reapplied all patches from 3.4.2 release
- Applied fix for pagination and sorting on status.cgi #381 (Phil Randal)

3.4.2 - 11/09/2012
--
FIXES
* Fixed issue where deleting a downtime could cause Nagios to crash
(Eric Stanley)
* Corrected logic so that end times for flexible downtimes are
calculated from the downtime start rather than the current time in the
case where Nagios is restarted (Eric Stanley)
* Fixed issue introduced by fix for bug #124 where flexible downtimes
are not taken into account on Nagios restart. (Scott Wilkerson, Eric
Stanley)
* Fixed bug #247: If a service reports no performance data, the perfdata
log file has no line indicating the test. (omnik...@free.fr)
* Fixed link for unhandled unreachable host problems on tactical
overview page (Rudolf Cejka)
* Fixed bug #345 with wild card searches not paging properly on
status.cgi (Phil Randal)
* Fixed bug #343 on status.cgi where Service Group Summary can
potentially show wrong totals (Mark Ziesemer)
* Fixed memory leaks on SIGHUP (Carlos Velasco)

There are quite a few front-end projects already that might have some ideas.

For internationalization, I'd look into gettext(). It's probably the
easiest to implement for internationalization.

For performance, if you're already using livestatus to fetch the data
that will take care of most of the performance issues, the rest are
simply a matter of coding efficiently. Don't loop through the status

absolutely have to display on the page, etc.

I use Livestatus Slave (1) for work with them. I have two conditions:

 -Pure CSS

 No javascript.
I need learn also about git or version systems for upload the projects.

 Thanks for you attention.

Re: [Nagios-users] High Service Check Latency

2012-05-22 Thread Mike Guthrie
What kind of information do you have about average CPU load or I\O wait
time? Whether Nagios is using ndoutils or not there will be a hardware
limit as to how many disk writes it can handle in a given period of
time. Even though you're only running a few active checks, it could be
a symptom that your machine is having to wait on itself to write to disk
for other things as well. The doc below is written for Nagios XI, but
of a lot of the items apply to Core as well. I would consider exploring
some options with a RAM disk in order to reduce disk activity.

 I bet you're using NDOUtils. I wouldn't recommend that. I couldn't
keep a Nagios server with under 6000 services limping along when

through the roof and the entire server would get farther and farther
 behind.

I went to Livestatus. It took me all of 20 minutes to adjust my
reports to use the new interface, and I haven't restart my Nagios
daemon since (other than normal maintenance).

Yes, you're right. My problem is, the solution is implemented into OPSView
 Community edition. It's
not a problem to alter-modify installation, btw the result is maybe some
 functionality in the whole
system (gui or whatever) would not work anymore. Time to move to other nagios
 installation? Maybe,
 but not right now.
For now I would like to know a way to identify (and possible solve) the
 actual high latency. I've no
idea if I can enable ndo logging or nagios logging to identify issues or
 bottlenecks.

going to include those numbers as they never have required the
 optimizations the polling has required.

This isn't a monolithic instance, we have 6 projects using instances
of our distributed Nagios-based software, called Racon (soon my
manager will give our team to package it as open source - so I hear at
least). We built it on core Nagios with a custom database layer based
on a very very early version of Merlin's database abstraction layer
(thank you Andreas!) - we have a custom client/server network-based
notification framework in use (we will release that as well) along
with a custom NEB/perl based client-server framework (also releasable,
just need time scheduled) for sending and processing performance data
 - the performance and notification framework are both horizontally
 scalabe and network fault tolerant.

What kinds of numbers of hosts and services are you all monitoring?
Which add-ons / distributed frameworks are you using?

Re: [Nagios-users] Averages of aggregated services?

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Guthrie
I don't know of any plugins or addons that do this out of the box, but
you could just write a custom plugin that ran the list of memory checks
against all of the servers then added them together. It could be as
simple as:

./check_many address1 address2 address3 address 4

and the check just runs the nrpe check for memory, adds the results, and
returns it to Nagios.

Otherwise, there are quite a few cluster checking plugins on
exchange.nagios.org, but I haven't used any of these myself.

able to do this with nagiosbpi or bp-addons plugins, but this does not
seem to be the case. Does anything like this exist?

I think you might try spaces, not commas. I have developed a
number of plugins, and I've never used anything but spaces to
delimit the performance data. If Nagios doesn't believe that's
valid data, it's going to ignore it.

I removed the commas, and I'm now using only spaces. It still isn't
 showing up in Nagios, though.

I'm slightly perplexed, since the perfdata used to show up in Nagios in
the form that I already posted it to the list. I don't know what changed.

Does anyone know any good ways of debugging this?
Try using floats for your thresholds instead of integers. Those are two
different data types being compared.

For debugging I usually set up a local passive check with hard-coded
status text and performance data, and then I just play with the format
until it starts being processed for a graph.

 Thanks,
 Jonathan

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios 3.4.0 complilation error (and trivial fix)

2012-05-09 Thread Mike Guthrie

Hey Phil,

Thanks for the clarification on this. I was trying to figure out why we
hadn't come across this issue on our local dev environments. Maybe some
other users can chime in on this, but my understanding was that
compiling with the embedded perl option tends to be problematic due to
memory leaks and other unpredictable behaviors. (??)

Let us know anything you find out, we appreciate the input!

On 5/9/2012 10:15 AM, Randal, Phil wrote:

I should have mentioned that that error only occurs if you try to
compile Nagios 3.4.0 with embedded perl support.

There's also no guarantee that it'll work properly even with that
patch. I had problems check_mk with Nagios 3.4.0, but unfortunately,
I haven't got the time or test environment to get to the bottom of it.

Cheers,

Phil

Re: [Nagios-users] The router - two providers - only one can be up

2012-03-30 Thread Mike Guthrie
You could monitor this using Nagios BPI. You can create a business
process out of these two hosts and then monitor the business process so
that you only get alerted if both hosts are down.
http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Addons/Components/Nagios-Business-Process-Intelligence-%28BPI%29/details

It could be a little overkill if you only have to do this once, but if
you have multiple scenarios like this it could come in handy.

 problem of the primary link.

I have configured this scenario with two hosts differents:
 fuck_router_provider1
 fuck_router_provider2

But always I have one host down... the quick and dirty solution is disable
notifications for secundary link and check with ping manually after but
 not practical.

Can I tell to Nagios that if primary link if up, not alert me about the
secundary link? How? With host dependency?

 Thanks for your help...

Re: [Nagios-users] Looking for a good to great book for Nagios

2012-03-01 Thread Mike Guthrie
Hi Robert,

I got started with Nagios Core using the following book, which I felt
was pretty straight forward, but this would be more of a getting
started book:
http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Nagios-3-0-Wojciech-Kocjan/dp/1847195180/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1330614890sr=8-1

Although the absolute best resource I know of for Nagios are the manuals
that come with our training partner's Nagios Training. Obviously this
is more expensive than just buying a book, but it's more interactive and
would pretty much equip you to be able to do whatever you ever needed to
do with Nagios. The manuals give lots of examples of how to actually do
everything, as well as concepts.

i did some googling and game up with

I'm not as familiar with XI as I'd like, but based on the demos and the

be exactly the same as with a normal Nagios Core install.

If you want to simply forward all of your results to a Nagios XI
machine, you can define an OCSP command for all of your services and
forward them along to the XI box. Nagios XI has a feature in the
Admin-Unconfigured Objects menu that allows you to automatically add
passive hosts and services that are inbound. Here are some docs with

Re: [Nagios-users] High check latency in a machine with low load

2011-10-11 Thread Mike Guthrie
Just to double check, are you locking your tables or stopping mysql when
you do your repair runs? You'll actually risk corrupting your DB tables
which will tank your CPU if the tables are being written to while a
repair run is occurring.

As far as the checks go, how many checks per second is your machine
running (on average)?

If ndoutils starts to create a heavy burden on the system you can also
offload ndoutils/mysql to a second machine. We wrote the below document

 Nagios Core as well.

Subject:* [Nagios-users] High check latency in a machine with low load

  Hi,

  I have a Nagios 3.2.3 deployment with 1000+ Hosts and 3000+ services.
This Nagios runs together with NDO and PNP (in bulk mode) in a server
with 4GB of Ram and 4 cpus.

One day I realized that the check delay in the performance CGI was
very high (300-400 seconds). It was very strange so I took the tunning
  guide form nagios
  (_http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/tuning.html_) and applied all
the points I could. In particular I adjusted the max_concurrent_checks
  to zero (no limit):

  max_concurrent_checks=0

  The reaper event:

  service_reaper_frequency=5
  max_check_result_reaper_time=15

and checked that the host checks where not forced. In addition I
configured 15 seconds of host check cache.

  cached_host_check_horizon=15

But the problem remains. And the load of the server is not very high.
Load of 2,5, 2 GB of free memory and an average utilization of disc of
7%. I disabled NDO and PNP but it was useless. After the first round
of checks, the delay returns, while the load of the server doesn't grow.

I have searched in google but all the problems area because of the
load in the server, but here this is not the main problem. So my
question is ¿what can I do now?¿There is some variable that shows me
where to look? I'm a bit lost right now and I don't know how to find
  the problem.

¿Or maybe the only way is to configure a master-slave nagios in order
  to maximize the server utilization?

In addition, I have pretty big timeouts (60 seconds) because of the
high latency on the network. All your help is appreciated. Thank you
  in advance.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios World Conference

2011-10-05 Thread Mike Guthrie
Hi All,

Andreas Ericsson wrote:
Hi all. I attended the Nagios World Conference North America last week
and though I'd dish out some kudos where such are due, and also dense
up the information to any newcomers that might get lucky when looking
for solutions to any particular problems.

Overall, the standard of the conference was very, very high. It was the
first Nagios conference I've gone to where I learned something new. A
rare occasion indeed, so many thanks to Ethan, Mary and Nagios Enterprises
for arranging such a high-quality event. I won't mention their talks,
since I don't want to inflate their egos too much, but check out the one
on visualizations by Mike Guthrie. Pretty cool stuff :)

I agree, the conference was very cool. I'm still decompressing from all
of the ideas that I got from other users. Thanks for the shout out, I'm
flattered ; )

Much of the focus was on scaling up Nagios. mod_gearman and livestatus
seem to be the most known and used projects for achieving that goal.
Reading status files is just too slow when viewing the UI, and a single
server just doesn't scale to enough checks (yet). DNX also seemed very
well investigated and used in some places, although a documentation
mishap seems to have lead many potential users away from it. For those
wondering, DNX can indeed distribute checks to workers based on host-
groups, just as mod_gearman can. It's just not well documented.
LivestatusSlave also got a lot of interest, although it didn't seem to
be as well used as either of the other three.
Kudos to Sven Nierlein (mod_gearman author/maintainer) Mathias Kettner
(mk_livestatus author/maintainer) and Lars Michelsen (LivestatusSlave
author). Your stuff is being used in production for positively *huge*
installs, so well done guys :) I sure hope you go to the conference
next year so you can talk about future development and gather even more
 interest for your projects.

Merlin wasn't much discussed, although the DNX maintainers (and I)
recommend it as the only sane way to get redundancy and automagic
loadbalancing. Probably because of the misconception that you're
required to run a separate UI and a fork of Nagios when using it. At
least that's what my slightly hurt ego wants to believe ;)

I will admit my own ignorance in realizing what Merlin can do, along
with several other projects I learned about last week. I think one of
the biggest things I took away from the conference is just the enormous
need to document and better publicize existing projects and also how to
implement some of the powerful set ups that many users have had to
figure out the hard way. Nagios is incredibly flexible and there's so
much that can be done with it, after this week I'm realizing that the
existing documentation just scratches the surface of what can be done
with it. If there's a need from the community, it's more documentation,
tutorials, and publicity. There's a wealth of great projects and Nagios
tricks out there and I for one would love to see that users are getting
all of the information that they need for the environments that they run.

General tips for running large installations is to offload the various
spool directories to ramdisk, along with status.dat and objects.cache
(since they're read quite frequently). Work is under way to make that
unnecessary by simply getting rid of disk I/O as much as possible. It
was pretty much headnodding when these tips were iterated in one talk
after another, so it seems the attending part of the Nagios community
have reach consensus that that's the best way to do it. Mounting all
disks with the noatime option is also a very good tip that'll get your
disk write operations (the slow ones) down to a fragment of what they
were before you latched that option on.

Many have large headaches with getting various graphing solutions to
scale properly. Some resorted to using Fusion I/O cards with exabyte
performance (quite expensive...), since using ramdisk to store the
tens or hundreds of gigabytes of rrd-files generated in large installs
isn't really an option. It would be nice to hear Joerg Linge's (author of
PNP4Nagios) take on other paths to increase performance next year. It
seems his project is the most widely used for graphing, so getting it to
perform exceptionally well would be time well spent.

Apart from that, there were plenty of other good presentations and very
awesome drinking^H^H^H^H^H^H^H mingle sessions. I highly recommend you
attend it next year if you're managing nagios install at $dayjob, or
if you're working on a Nagios addon project and want to get immediate
feedback on what users are looking for.

 Hello.

I want to check a service only once a day. So I tried this configuration:

 define timeperiod {
 timeperiod_name once-a-day

 monday 08:00-08:30
 tuesday 08:00-08:30
 wednesday 08:00-08:30

 friday 08:00-08:30
 saturday08:00-08:30
 sunday 08:00-08:30
 }

 define service {
 use generic-service
 check_periodonce-a-day
 normal_check_interval 1440; 24 hours
 ...
 }

Do you need the check to run between 8-8:30, or just every 24 hours?
Your check_interval will not exceed the maximum check spread that's in
the main nagios.cfg file. I would try either setting the timeperiod for
the check *or* setting the wide check interval.

Now when I check the service's next schedule time, Nagios is still
showing that the next check is scheduled to 24h after the previous check
and at 22:53 (pm). Restarting Nagios does not change that. Any tips for
 what's wrong in the configuration?

If Nagios wants to schedule a check at a certain time, but it's not in
the timeperiod then it won't run it.

 That's interesting. Documentation says:

Specifying a timeperiod in the /check_period/ directive allows you to
restrict the time that Nagios perform regularly scheduled, active
checks of the host or service. When Nagios attempts to reschedule a
host or service check, it will make sure that the next check falls
within a valid time range within the defined timeperiod. If it
doesn't, Nagios will adjust the next check time to coincide with the
next valid time in the specified timeperiod.

So I guess documentation is wrong then?

If you don't mind what time of day your check is run, then use the
 standard 24x7 timeperiod.

If you want a check to run at a specific time of day, you need to run
it from cron so it submits the check result to Nagios as a passive
 check.

 http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/nagioscore/3/en/passivechecks.html

Alternatively, if you don't mind your check being run a couple of
times each day, I would think you could leave your config as it is,
but set the normal_check_interval to 12 (minutes) or so to give it a
good chance of being scheduled within your 30-minute window.
Personally I would use cron, but it can be a bit fiddly to set up the
 first time you try it.

OK, I guess I'd have to go with the passive checks through crontab
then (because I do mind what time the checks are run).

Ah yes, previously I just restarted Nagios every day (from crontab) so
that the checks would be re-scheduled, but in the new installation
Nagios does not re-schedule the checks on startup. Is there an option
for that? I don't seem to find it...
