Start again and follow http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart-ubuntu.html Change the version numbers to whatever version you are installing obviously as to whats wrote in that guide as its quite old. Apologies for the delay, been very busy with other things.
Right I have put Nagios into Debug this morning and rerun the tests.
I let it get a couple of successful pings to the server then pulled the
network cable from it.
Behaviour is completely different this morning
The host check is behaving now and rechecking every 3 minutes as its told
too in the host template. I got my text and email alert to say the host was
down when I expected it!
But now its the service check that is running every 1 minute now, which its
not told too when in problem state.
My service template clearly states when in problem state to retry_interval
of 3 minutes:
define service{
name service-server; The name of this host
template (used above in the checks)
check_period server_24x7; Server are monitored at
all times
check_interval 1; Server are checked every 1
minute when in OK state
retry_interval 3; Server checked every 3
minutes if in problem state
max_check_attempts 3; Server checked 3 times to

notification_period server_24x7; Emails and Text are
sent out any time of day
notification_interval 3; Resend Notifications
every 3 minutes
notification_options c,r; Only send alerts for
servers in CRITICAL or RECOVERY state

Now this is what happens:
* Server goes down at 1pm.
* I check the next scheduled check and it clearly states 1.03pm
* But at 1.01pm it checks again and then spits out an email and
text message saying the server is down.
Completely ignoring the retry_interval setting!!!
Id expect from the above:
* 1pm server goes down
* 1.03pm check 2 is done
* 1.06pm check 3 is done and determined hard state.
* At 1.06pm the notification should be sent out.
Why is this, is something in my config wrong?
Ubuntu 12.04 desktop and Nagios 3.4.1

Also have you double checked you have entered the correct details in the nagios.cfg file for the broker options etc? And have you got a template for the hosts to use in your templates.cfg?
And then have you told your hosts to use that template?
In all honesty I would abandon this and use your time with PNP4NAGIOS!
Following the docs on the site you can have it up and running and working in
under 20 minutes!

Surely the 6d 22h.. is scheduled uptime??? Its Up and Nagios knows its up? And on the flip side of it, what is the 1h 59m etc that is classed as scheduled uptime? Probably being really stupid here! I use the following host and service escalations to do exactly that.
It makes the first notification a text and email and subsequent problem
alerts email only, then an email and SMS for recovery
Don't know if it's the right way to do it but it works fine for me

Hi all, I am using the check_doomsday plugin to alert me to licence expiry dates of software. I have the need though to have a check for a recurring day but of each month - I don't think check_doomsday can do this? I need to monitor the 27th of each month automatically without having to change the config file each month to update the date argument in my service command for check_doomsday. Is there a plugin available to do this, or anybody have any suggestions on achieving this please? I had this on a particular 2008 server. The other 86 servers were fine just not this one. I had to rebuild the performance counter indexes. Try running: lodctr /R from a cmd prompt and then reboot the server and see if that sorts. Doesnt the counter get reset as the log is rotated daily in Nagios 3? On the web interface if you click your host and then View Notifications for this host you can click the arrows for Earlier Archive and it will go back through the log files stored in the archive folder for each previous 24 hours. Hi Marco I use a Nokia 6021 mobile phone hooked up via USB using the gammu software, and I write all my sms alerts to a MYSQL database, an sms daemon then scans the database and sends out any that are in the outbox table through the connected mobile phone. Got a mystery regarding the use of regex matching that I hope someone on the
listserv might clear. We have the appropriate config options to use regex,

it works just fine for the members directive - ie. members.* expands

But hostgroup_members.* returns an error along the lines of Could not
find member group '.*' specified in hostgroup, leading us to believe
that Nagios is simply ignoring regex matching for the hostgroup_members
directive.
Anyone know if we're off our rockers, or if Nagios really does handle
things this way?

That parses ok but I end up with nothing in the group when I look at the
nagios display.
If I use individual members it works and they appear in the nagios display.
Looks like it doesn't work at any rate.
I just upgrade to the latest version as I was having issues with wildcards
but I think that was more down to my understanding. I've been trying to use
them for escalations. I think I finally got there (I think - time will tell)
but I had to add a lot of service groups to make it work the way I wanted.

Bit of a shot in the dark here, but I notice that in your examples from the
command line, you use -U, -w and -c. But the Nagios service you define also
adds in a -P option (port, I'm guessing). If you haven't already tried
manually
running from the command line with the -P option, it would be worth a shot.

[Nagios-users] contactgroup definition
Is it normal that there is NO error on startup when I - in a contact definition - add a contactgroups directive - for a contactgroup that has not been defined? I only get an error when I try to use a non-existing contact group in a service definition. This makes me wonder what is going on. [FEATURE REQUEST] No matter how it finally works, it would be nice to be able to generate the groups on-the-fly as mentioned above, but with the possibility to view the resulting groups. [Nagios-users] SIGSEGV when trying to use eventhandler
Hi guys,
I am new to nagios but so far it's working well for me and is monitoring a
number of real and virtual hosts. Nagios 3.0.6 is installed on an
OpenSolaris 2009.06 host and monitoring routers other devices and VM's in
VirtualBox.
My issue is when I try to add an event handler, I get a SIGSEGV and nagios
restarts.
I have posted the details of the code I am using and the error
here...http://pastebin.com/vBb7xTND and also below (but it reads better @
pastebin).
I have tried several different scripts and code combinations (even empty
scripts and commands like ls) and all give the same error.
Can anyone help me work out why it's happening?

[Nagios-users] Calendar dates in timeperiods

Specs:
Nagios 3.0.3
CentOS release 5.2 (Final)
I'm trying to configure a 'vacation' timeperiod so I will not receive alerts
using calendar dates, but once the dates are accepted into nagios, they seem
to go skewiff.
My config looks like this;

Is anybody else seeing the same thing or am I doing something obviously

[Nagios-users] intermittent CGI failure
Installed 3.0.3 from source on OpenBSD 4.3 (sparc64). Everything works, but every so often the CGI's will fail. e.g. If I refresh, say, status.cgi?host=all 10 times in a row, it'll fail at least once or twice. I can reproduce using both Apache and nginx. Next steps to debug? Thanks for your response. Email is working correctly since the host
notices are going out. I'm aware that the notifications won't go out if
the server is down, but the server is up as we setup a dummy service.
Hitting a brick wall here. :)

errors when reloading Nagios.

You don't have any contact_groups defined for the services that I can
see. no contacts == no notifications. With nagios-2, they're not

The contacts are setup correctly since our check_ping which is declared in the
hosts.cfg file works perfectly fine and we do get the correct alerts.
Could someone point me in the right direction of what I'm doing wrong here? I
can't seem to get emails if a service is down. It's most likely in my syntax,
but I'm not sure where since I get no errors when reloading Nagios.

some times we are receiving alerts from all of those services, however I

I just set the contacts.cfg email to :blackhole: and used the --exclude flag in the rsync cron so it doesn't copy over that file from master, since it never changes. I just found that our Nagios is built with embeded perl option, and I have to mention the path to perl before each plugin. that was the reason perfformance cammand was not executed through nagios.cfg. however still I had some weired problems with nagiosgraph. 1-I don't know why when I reload nagios, it removes /tmp/service-perfdata file. 2- I have added /usr/bin/perl before plugin command and it works on our dev servers, but in our production server, nothing is written to /tmp/service-perfdata. [Nagios-users] Host commands failing
I have a Nagios installation that I am having an intermittant problem with. On the host page, the host commands, including such commands as Disable checks of all services on this host and Disable notifications for all services on this host are not working most of the time. I see the commands appear in the /usr/local/nagios/var/rw/nagios.cmd file, but they do not take effect... most of the time. I saw the commands fail at first, then they worked two times back to back, then they stopped working again. As far as I know, the configuration changes were all made prior to me trying commands. I only configured the system once. The commands are not piling up, I usually only see one or two comamnds in the file, just now there was one from an hour ago, and another I added just now (to see if they were being erased), but none of the commands from this morning. So something is waking up and removing the commands, and twice it execured them. When they were executed, it was quickly. Can someone walk me through the steps taken to process this file? What runs the programs, what clears the file? This is a vmware ubuntu host, and I have the time being frequently corrected because of excessive time drift, so could that be screwing something up? I also run cacti, and I correct the time every 5 minutes, 1 minute before cacti polls, and the time adjustments are on the order of 0 to 3 seconds typically. Could that be contributing to the problem? I would have searched the forums first, but nagios.meulie.net is down at the moment... And googling for half an hour didn't help. [Nagios-users] Downtime scheduling of Host/Service Groups
Hi all, Quick question: When I put a Host- or Servicegroup in downtime, Nagios generates a separate downtime/comment for each host or service within that group. When I want to remove this downtime for the whole group, I have to remove each line separately which is cumbersome. I can't imagine that this is the only way to do it, there must be an easier way I'm overlooking. What I want to be able to do is: schedule downtime for a group (say a servicegroup containing 20 services) and remove it in the same manner (ie as a group, not as 20 seperate removals that each need a few clicks). Is this possible, or does someone know a tool or workaround that does this? [Nagios-users] Different results from 'check_snmp' running on different servers
Hi list, I have an odd problem, hope someone can shed some light on this. I'm busy installing a new Nagios server. The old one is running Nagios 1.2, and the new one is running 2.9. The used nagios plugins on the old server is version 1.3.1, on the new server it is: 1.4.8. I issue the following check from the old server (the 1.2): oldNagios:/usr/local/nagios/libexec # ./check_snmp -H switch1 -o ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusDescr.1005 SNMP OK - Switch#1, Sensor#1, Status is GREEN The exitcode of this check is 0 (OK) newNagios:/usr/local/nagios/libexec # ./check_snmp -H switch1 -o ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusDescr.1005 SNMP WARNING - Switch#1, Sensor#1, Status is GREEN Now the exitcode is 1 (WARNING) !!! Then I issue this check from the new server (the 2.9 installation), but with the old plugin (1.3.1): newNagios:/usr/local/nagios/libexec.131 # ./check_snmp -H switch1 -o ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusDescr.1005 SNMP WARNING - Switch#1, Sensor#1, Status is GREEN And again: the exitcode is 1 (WARNING) I copied the commands and output directly from the respective Putty sessions, and no, there was no state change between the different commands. The oldNagios still tells me all checks are green on this switch, and the newNagios still shows me WARNING states. I'm completely flabbergasted, any ideas??? Thomas, Thanks for your swift reply! I've been digging deeper into the hell called SNMP, and found out what the problem is: The NET-SNMP commands return these two errors: Cannot find module (SNMPv2-TC-v1): At line 11 in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/CISCO-ENVMON-MIB.txt Cannot find module (SNMPv2-SMI-v1): At line 10 in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/CISCO-SMI.txt Strange thing is: SNMPv2-TC and SNMPv2-SMI are available, but not these '-v1' variants. Even stranger is that the 'oldNagios' server doesn't have these modules either, but does not complain. So the WARNING is indeed issued by the underlying snmpget command and does not indicate a problem with the monitored device. Regarding not being able to monitor a status change on these OID's: I think you are right. I did not create these checks but one of my colleagues did, and I will give him the OID's you suggested to monitor so we can improve these checks. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! Problem solved! Here's how: I used snmpget to see what the real errors were: Cannot find module (SNMPv2-TC-v1): At line 11 in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/CISCO-ENVMON-MIB.txt Cannot find module (SNMPv2-SMI-v1): At line 10 in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/CISCO-SMI.txt Strange, these MIB's don't exist on the oldNagios server... I tried to find these files on the internet. If found at all, I had to pay to download them... So at last, I searched for SNMPv2-TC-v1.txt and got one link: http://fresh.t-systems-sfr.com/unix/src/privat2/sella_nms-2.0.0.tar.gz/ Instead of downloading this complete tarball, I clicked on the link and got an overview of all the files. Used the browser's search function to find the files needed and opened them on-screen. Copy paste them directly into the mibs-dir on my server in a file with the correct name, and I was done. I think James means by 'some of the hosts still have not done their pings...' that he has setup check_ping as a host_check. If that is the case, it can be explained fairly easy: host_checks are only carried out when one or more services return a non-OK status. If he is indeed talking about ping as a service_check, something else is misbehaving. But, we need some more info to see what's going on. James, could you please post the relevant part of your configuration, so people can see how your checks are configured? In other words: automate the process of managing standby phonenumbers. Unfortunately, things like holidays, people calling in sick, etc will make this probably less usefull... Hiya. nagfs is an event broker module, which implements a filesystem interface to the current status of a running Nagios daemon. This means in a nutshell that you can query the status of a given service or set of services using everyday shell tools like find and grep. Each host is represented as a directory in the filesystem. Each host directory contains a file for each service nagios is monitoring on that host. Each file contains a single number representing the state of that service. For example, once nagfs is running, you can list all the services currently in a critical state by typing: grep -rl 2 /usr/share/nagios/status/local The numbers are what you'd expect ( 0:OK, 1:Warning, 2:Critical, 3,Unknown). If the service is in a soft state a servicename.soft file is created with the soft state status number. Each host directory also contains a HOST file which contains the current status of the host itself. As a second example, you could get a list of all the services Nagios is checking with: find /usr/share/nagios/status/local -type f This is a handy thing, and much easier than scraping html for the same info. nagfs registers for SERVICE_STATUS_DATA and HOST_STATUS_DATA updates from the Nagios server, which means that the nagfs filesystem is immediately brought up to date upon Nagios startup, and is always perfectly in sync with Nagios's memory state. It's released under the BSD license. The tarball is available on nagios exchange, and my blog http://www.skeptech.org Nagfs was originally the brainchild of Jeremy Blosser, who implemented it as a collection of shell scripts called via global event handlers. I found it so useful, and became so attached to it that I eventually forgot it wasn't actually part of the core Nagios package. I later re-implemented it as an event broker module as an object lesson for the addison wesley nagios book I authored, and refined it as part of a larger nagios clustering project called nagimesh, which is not yet complete. However, I find nagfs so indispensable that I decided to release the source as a stand-alone NEB module, in the hope that you may too someday forget the time you've already spent without it. Check INSTALL in the tarball for installation instructions. It is assumed that you have a working Nagios implementation which has been compiled with the --enable-event-broker configure switch. I have several Nagios servers running versions of Nagios from 2.0alpha1 to 2.8, and nagfs works with all of them, so it ought to work for you if you haven't ventured into 3.0 territory yet.
