A similar question came up here only a couple of weeks ago. This was

If it's any help to you, the URL I now use is:

 http://webserver/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=allhostprops=10servicestatustypes=29serviceprops=10sorttype=2sortoption=6noheader

Even though this doesn't explictly show hosts, if a host is down you
will still see it on this page because its services will also be down
 (or unknown or whatever).

According to the Display Filters panel which appears if you remove the
 noheader, this one shows:

 Host Status Types: All
Host Properties:Not In Scheduled Downtime Has Not Been Acknowledged
Service Status Types: Pending | Unknown | Warning | Critical
Service Properties: Not In Scheduled Downtime Has Not Been Acknowledged

and the sort is by state duration descending.

Of course it won't show downed hosts if they have no services. I make
sure all hosts have at least one service (even if that's just ping) so
they can be seen on this service page.

Oke, that is getting close, need to add some service checks to hosts
that don't have that. However this will not show flapping events :(
something that is important. Not sure if it will show blocking outages.

[Nagios-users] NOC display screen

2011-02-27 Thread chiel
Hi all,

I was wondering what everybody is using for there noc display screen. We
have a display screen where I want to display both the host and service
problems (if any). Using the normal nagios webpages we still have to
click on either the service or host to display a particular problem.
I see there is something called Naglite(v1,v2 and v3) which seems to do
the trick. With a bit of tweaking this should work. Before I start
configure I would like to know what you are all using.

Regards,
chiel

I monitor a switch in our network with a couple of snmp scripts.
Sometimes it happens that there is no snmp connection availible through the

Can I use service dependencie in this case on all the snmp script that use a
snmpagent as a parent? Or am I missing something and that there is the

So besecauly run this command: /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v
/usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg. Is there a plugin for this?

I want this because I reload the nagios config every 15 minutes through a

The reason of using a cronjob is that custom programs populate/change my .cfg

[Nagios-users] Send notification if state doesn't change

2007-05-30 Thread chiel
hi all,

I got some passive services checks in nagios. When this services goes into
critical state I get a notification.
But everytime I need to reset the service to OK by submitting a passive check
through the nagios webinterface. Because if I leave it in critical I will not
send a other notification if a other critical result occurs, because the
service is already in a critical state.

Is there something to keep sending notification for a passive check (maybe
active check to) even if that service is already in, for example, critical?

Re: [Nagios-users] Send notification if state doesn't change

2007-05-30 Thread chiel
That is not execly what I mean. The notivication_interval will resend a
notification after a period of time.
I use passive checks, and the only thing that this check will recieve is
critical states. So every time I recieve a pasive check I want a notification.

From what I understand, the notification_interval option defined in the
service definition is what tells Nagios how often to resend the message.
Default is 60 hence why you might never have gotten another one. Try lowering
that value and that should work.

[Nagios-users] Load slowly increases after interval change

2007-05-10 Thread chiel
Hello,

Currently I'm monitor about 100 hosts with about 300 service check.
I want to know what the load will be if I set some servicechecks with a
interval of 5 minutes to 1 minute, so I have changed this last night and
started to monitor the load. See the picture below.

http://chiel.mine.nu/load-day2.png

The strange thing is that the load is not going up right away (what I expected)
but in a while slowly increases. How is this possible?
This machine only runs nagios (version 2.8).

I guess you'll have to treat them all as independent hosts, all at the
 same level.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios sents notifi immideatly after recieving syslog error

2007-04-12 Thread chiel
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for pointing met to check_log3, but i'm not sure if its what i'm
looking for after I tested it.
I didn't test the GroundWork yet because at this moment I only use Nagios.

The thing that I am looking for is as follows, I want to get my Nagios
notification e-mail as follows:

* Nagios 2.8 *

Notification Type: PROBLEM
Host: NAGIOS
State: DOWN
Address: ***.***.***.***
Info: Syslog messages

$DEVICENAME$ has reported the following syslog messages over the last 5
minutes:

Emergencies:
-emergencie message 1
-emergencie message 1

Alerts:
-alert message 1

Critical:
-etc...

Date/Time: Mon Mar 19 13:21:07 CET 200

..Or something like that.
Group those messages together is also a posibility but I prefer the above
methode.
Is this posible with the Groundwork Foundation? or must I write some custom
script? (don't hope so because I'm not that good of a programmer..maybe
someone can help?)

Well, yes...or do it at the plugin level.
I mean, what about writing the syslog messages to a log file that you
parse every 5 minutes? There are plugins like check_log3 that do this, and
they can be set to filter for regex expressions.
Another way would be to use syslog-ng to accept and filter the syslog
messages, and post them to Nagios as passive checks via a program that
 does some consolidation/filtering for you.
We have done this using the Foundation database in GroundWork - post the
messages there, and then query periodically to find the conditions you
want an alert for with a simple perl plugin.
FYI GroundWork Foundation is now bundled into GroundWork Monitor Open
 Source 5.1.

It would be much easier to write, say, a shell script that takes the
notification details as parameters to the script.

That way your script can then do much greater filtering than Nagios alone
 does.

The thing is that when syslog sent for example 20 error messages from

Is there a way that Nagios waits for (let say) 5 minutes, after the

[Nagios-users] Nagios sents notifi immideatly after recieving syslog error

2007-04-11 Thread chiel
Hello,

On some of my network devices I have set up syslog to send there results to
Nagios trough passive checks. This works perfectly.
When syslog sents a error messages Nagios immideatly sents a notification
e-mail/sms.

The thing is that when syslog sent for example 20 error messages from one
device within 5 secondes I also get 20 e-mail/sms notifications.
Is there a way that Nagios waits for (let say) 5 minutes, after the first error
hase been received, and than sents these 20 error messages all in one
notification?

[Nagios-users] NRPE - command arguments, security?

2007-04-10 Thread chiel
Hi all,

I have just implemented some NRPE servers and I want to allow command
arguments with nrpe.
In the security readme form nrpe I see that this is a security issue and you
must set dont_blame_nrpe (only the argument name already...).

The only thing is that I don't see any reason in the docs why this is so
dangerous. Can somebody please explain?

Re: [Nagios-users] nrpe stopped working after upgrade

2007-04-10 Thread chiel
hi,

I had this issue also today.
In my case I had the command definitions set to recieve aruguments ($ARG1$,
$ARG2$..etc) but the service definitions did not pased any aruguments (sinds
it didn't need to).
After making a second check_nrpe command definition that didn't expected any
arguments it worked.

hope it helps,

 Hi Henrik,

As I mentioned previously, the no output returned from plugin error
means that Nagios did contact NRPE successfully, but had nothing
returned (otherwise you'd get a Socket timeout or NRPE: SSL handshake
failed or similar failure). If you're certain Nagios isn't actually
contacting NRPE, then I suggest you check your Nagios config etc.

What might be helpful is if you also post:

 What happens when you run check_nrpe -H remote_host_ip -c
a_valid_nrpe_command when run as the Nagios user.
The output you see in Nagios.
Your Nagios's NRPE command definition and a relevant service definition.

 Andy.

 Certainly.
Imagine you have this command in your nrpe.cfg file:

 command[check_disk]=/usr/local/nagios/libexec/chec_disk -p $ARG1$

and you want to pass /usr as the parameter to check the disk space
 available to the /usr directory.
Now, imagine some rogue has discovered you're running NRPE on your server,
connects to it, and sends the command check_disk with /usr rm -rf /
 as the argument.

NRPE will pass out to the shell the command
 /usr/local/nagios/libexec/chec_disk -p /usr rm -rf /
which will cause it to run the plugin, then erase the entire contents of
 your server's file system.

To be fair, I think it's only a risk if your server is wide open in other
 ways, such as:

 - NRPE allowing any host to connect to it
 - No firewall restrictions
 - sudo security really permissive

etc. So if you know that only your Nagios server can connect to Nagios
(restricted by firewalls and allowed_hosts in nrpe.cfg) I think, with a
bit of extra attention paid to command definitions, you'll be OK. But
 that's just my opinion.

Note you also have to have compiled NRPE with an extra option to allow
command arguments (./configure --enable-command-args) as well as setting
the option in the config file.

 Andy.

2007-03-28 Thread chiel
Ok, thanks for pointing me to the Groups function in Monarch. Altrough I
will have to install Groundwork open source, I will give it a try.
Does anyone have experiance with these kinds of setup's??

I also find I the monarch readme file:
quote:

You will find most of the imformation you need in the Help document.
More information
can be found in the MonarchDeploy module. In it is an example that
has been implemented
successfully.

But I can't find any usefull information in the help files. does anybody
ever used the MonarchDeploy.pm script?

That can work, sure. If you are using Monarch, you can use the
MonarchCallout.pm to initiate an rsync and/or scp over to the backup
 server and restart Nagios there.
You might also check out the Goups function in Monarch - helps with
distributing the config to multiple Nagios servers.

This setup work perfectly, the only issue that I have is that I will

 have

to do all the configuration twice. Is there some kind of tool that I

We use rsync over ssh hourly to synchronize configs from a central host
to 5 other hosts. It's worked very well for almost 5 years.

[Nagios-users] Configuration tool for large environment

2007-03-27 Thread chiel
Hello,

I'm using Nagios to monitor a large amount of hosts en services. I want to use
a easy to use administration tool to do the configurations.
I currently using Monarch, it does the job verry good. But I have searched the
nagios exchange website and there are some other programs that also will do the
job (fruity, NagiosQL 2005, NagiosWeb).
I was wondering what kind of front end you guys use, and what your experience
are with these tools.

Another quistion I have I with failover servers. I use a failover server that
is actively checking all the hosts that my nagios server is checking, the only
diffrence is that I will only enable notification when the first nagios fails.
This setup work perfectly, the only issue that I have is that I will have to do
all the configuration twice. Is there some kind of tool that I can use to sync
the configuration to a secondary server?

Thanks.-

Subject: [Nagios-users] check_nagios and system log

 Hi,

I'm running two Nagios-Boxes which should monitor themselves. Server A
monitors Server B and viceversa. I'm using check_nagios, executed remote
via ssh. This setup works fine, check_nagios looks for one or more
running nagios processes and for an entry in the system log not older
 than 5 minutes.

This is a perfect solution to monitor if nagios is still working
correctly - almost. Nagios only logs if there is an issue with a
monitored service or an user action. But in a perfect world there isn't
any entry.. ok, in my world there is an entry, but not every five
minutes. So check_nagios reports NAGIOS WARNING: 1 process, status log
 updated 1379 seconds ago.

Is there an option to enable a I'm still alive!-entry in the logfile
each minute or so? Or is there a more gentle way to monitor if nagios is
 working fine?

 Regards,

 Falk

[Nagios-users] Recommend hardware specs

2007-02-28 Thread chiel
Hi,

I was looking for some recommend hardware specs, but I didn't find any.
The only think that I was able to find was in the Apress Pro Nagios 2.0
book, it had the following table:

#of host# of cpuCPU SpeedMemoryDisk Space
1001800MHz+ 512MB+5GB+
100-500 1 1GHz+ 1GB+10GB+
500-10001+3GHz+ 1GB+20GB+
1000 1+3GHz+ 2GB+40GB+

Do you guys agree with this list? The article also said that disk speed (scsi)
was also very important.
I think I will be monitoring 1000 hosts. With distributed nagios servers.

And what are the benefits of the following technologies: 64bit, Hyper-Threading
and Dual-core in comparison with Nagios.
I'm using nagios 2.7, but maybe the upcoming nagios 3.0 will have different
specs?

Like to see you comments.

[Nagios-users] Current state of database support?

2007-02-26 Thread chiel
Hello,

Because of the implementation of other application in Nagios I was looking at
support for databases.
I see that database support for Nagios 2.0 has been dropped. When I search the
web/forums etc I see some topics to address this issue, but they are all more
then a year old and I don't know the current state of of this support.

What I want to do:
I want to be able to add hosts / services from my current application (written
in php) to the nagios config for monitoring.
Because of the amount of hosts en services my preferred option is to use some
kind of database.

So can some advice me how to proceed on this.
Thanks, chiel

Hi Hugo,

Thank you for your comments. I understand this way.
But what I'm trying to say is that

I understand that you create a service (let say Ping) and put all your
hosts (or hostgroups) in there that you want to check with ping.

First off. Print the manual in full or whatever allows you to read it
cover to cover. But go over the full manual at least once from cover to
 cover.

But is it also possible to define these checks in the hosts.cfg file??
So I would become something like this:

 define host{
host_name server1
alias Linux server 1
address 10.0.0.1
contact_groups network_team
checks check_ping, check_load, check_snmp --- This
 line
 }

This is rather completely wrong. I think you need to reverse your way of

 thinking.

Think of hosts as machines. You can add a check on the machine but it is

just to see if the hardware is there. For this most people use the
 default
check but in some cases you need to deviate. That is where the checks on
 a
 host end.

You care about service provided. You only check the host to make sure
 they
remain active because you need them to run the service. In this regard
 you
can think of CPU and memory usages as services on which other services
rely. (If your CPU is 0% idle your MySQL service is likely to be running

 poorly.)

So you need to add a 100 hosts if you have a 100 machines. But read the
part on templates very very carefully as it will save a lot of time and
 work.

Then you define service which may run on some hosts, mosts hosts or all
 hosts.

So define a service named POSTFIX for example and use the check_smtp
 check
 to test it.

If in doubt go over the manual a few times and study the mailinglist
 archives.

For example my 4 backup DNS servers:

 # 4 backup servers:
 define hostgroup {
 hostgroup_name mydyndns-org
 alias mydyndns.org servers
 members ns2.mydyndns.org
 members ns3.mydyndns.org
 members ns4.mydyndns.org
 members ns5.mydyndns.org
 }

 # Template for these hosts
 define host {
 namemydyndns-template
 register0
 check_command check-host-alive
 max_check_attempts 3
 active_checks_enabled 1
 passive_checks_enabled 0
 check_period24x7
 retain_status_information 1
 retain_nonstatus_information1
 notification_interval 60
 notification_period 24x7
 notification_optionsd,u,r,f
 notifications_enabled 1
 }

 # The 4 machines:
 define host{
 use mydyndns-template
 host_name ns2.mydyndns.org
 alias DNS server 2
 address 204.13.249.82
 parents transip-switch
 hostgroups mydyndns-org
 contact_groups mydyndns-org
 }

 define host{
 use mydyndns-template
 host_name ns3.mydyndns.org
 alias DNS server 3
 address 204.13.250.82
 # address 63.209.15.211
 parents transip-switch
 hostgroups mydyndns-org
 contact_groups mydyndns-org
 }

 define host{
 use mydyndns-template
 host_name ns4.mydyndns.org
 alias DNS server 4
 address 213.155.150.206
 parents transip-switch
 hostgroups mydyndns-org
 contact_groups mydyndns-org
 }

 define host{
 use mydyndns-template
 host_name ns5.mydyndns.org

Re: [Nagios-users] Service checks in hosts.cfg?

2007-02-24 Thread chiel
Hi Hugo,

Thank you for your comments. I understand this way nagios must be
configured.

define service{
 use mydyndns-template
 host_name
ns2.mydyndns.org,ns3.mydyndns.org,ns4.mydyndns.org,ns5.mydyndns.org
 service_description PING
 check_command check_ping!300,20%!1000,60%
 contact_groups mydyndns-org
}

In the above example you define all your hosts that you want to check with
ping on one line. Let say I want to check over a 100 hosts with this
services, must they al go on 1 line (?!).
I can't put the hostgroup here because not al the hosts in that hostgroup
respond to ping.
(Of course I split up the config files as much as I can with creating
cfg_dir's)
