There is something definitely not right here. We have about 1 checks and the performance is lot better. [Nagios-users] nrpe configuration help
All, I need some suggestion for nrpe configuration. I have 3 different kind of architecture in my setup. I have 32 bit linux machine (plugins installed at /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory) , 64 bit linux machine (plugins installed /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins directory), solaris machine (plugins installed at /opt/libexec directory) In my nrpe.conf file I would three definitions like below [check_something]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_something [check_something_x64]= /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_something [cehck_something_unix]=/opt/libexec/check_somthing in my service definition, I would name them differently and call the command file, for example I would have a check disk, disk_x64, disk_unix. In commands.cfg file I would call them like command_name check_remote command_line $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c $ARG1$ However, now new requirements came in, where disk, disk_x64, disk_unix must have same service name. I need to find a clever way define service disk and call different nrpe command based on architecture. Can someone please help me with this. Re: [Nagios-users] Designing distributed and failover architecture
I have not implemented distributed nagios but I have failover setup. Few comments I want to make 1) If you are using ndoutils for backend make sure you have looked at faster speed up option. There is a patch for faster start up in opsview 2) if you using nsca to transfer acknowledgement and comments make sure you do some research on that. scalability is a problem 3) remember to understand failover architecture properly. I have made few mistakes when it comes to ndoutils. your ndomod data processing option should be different on the failover from master server. Your master should push configuration definitions into database but your failover should not push theses configuration defitions in database. 4) Keep in mind scalability will be a problem. data retention is really a difficult problem for large setup. Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios web GUI, contact groups, hosts and services
Karssen, Your problem appears to be process not the tool. I am not suggesting how to conduct business in your organization but here is my suggestion. I would reach out to noc management and put together a wiki or how to for each unique possible critical alert scenario. The I would add the notes_url parameter of Nagios to point to that particular wiki page. Only thing noc has to do click on the notes_url page and they will know exactly what to do with the alert. Thanks On Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 3:40 AM, L.C. Karssen lennart.kars...@snow.nlwrote: Dear list, I'm presently working on a Nagios 3.2.0 setup that monitors approximately 1000 hosts and about 5000 services. The setup doesn't make use of Nagios' notification system, instead people at a control center (NOC) use the Nagios web interface to alert the appropriate people in case of an alert. The Nagios configuration is based on a set of host (group) templates, where services are assigned to host groups. For example: the 'check_swap' service definition is associated with the host group 'all unix hosts'. The problem I'm confronted with is that the people at the NOC don't need to see all services on a given host. For example, they shouldn't call the sysadmin at night if an SSL certificate check goes into critical state because the certificate is only valid for ten more days. So we want to remove that service from their view. In the present situation contact groups (used to determine which servers are visible to which department) are added to each specific host, but according to the Nagios docs (http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/cgiauth.html) a contact group can see _all_ services on a given host if it is listed as a contract group for the host. So I decided to remove the NOC contact group from the individual host definitions and to assign the NOC contact group only to specific services. This leads me to another problem. Some service checks (i.e. host groups) are used in one department only. This works fine. However, some other service checks (like check_swap for the 'all unix hosts' hostgroup) are shared by all departments, but some departments don't want the NOC to see check_swap alerts whereas others do want to pass these alerts to NOC. It would be possible to make services with slightly different names (e.g. check_swap_dept1, check_swap_dept2), each with the correct contact group. However, that seems to be a needless increase of complexity. Another approach would be to make host groups for each department and somehow change the service contact group for each host group. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get that to work. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. This is not an issue. nagios search bar does regular expression search. do ffs-* in your box and it will result in all the hosts. Nagios is a monitoring tool. Affected are all Nagios versions = 3.1.0. I could reproduce it here: if the patch above is backed out, the scheduling behaves correctly. I've managed to get a libtap test case with the failure now. As you correctly say, removing the t-tm_isdst=-1 in utils.c fixes it. However, the fact it works is lucky. The check is that the scheduled time is between a date_range_start and a date_range_end. This date_range_end is based on the timeperiod definitions. However, an end point of 00:00 is calculated as 24*60*60. Obviously, this is wrong on the day that the clocks go back as there are 25 hours in that day. So removing tm_isdst gets the calculation for the epoch time wrong, but that luckily works because the time falls within the 24 hour period. I've applied the patch to remove that single tm_isdst. Tests are also added now, for this specific issue. Long term, I think it is correct that the isdst flag be set, but there are other problems that are lurking in the code, such as the calculation for the next appropriate time. Any comments? Re: [Nagios-users] how to start nagios multiple instance
Marc, Thanks for your reply. The reason behind doing multiple instance is described below. Thanks 1) Previous monitoring system (survivor) was running multiple instance based on different systems group. 2) I have been doing hostgroup and servicegroup along with contactgroup to represent different instances of previous monitoring system. However its growing exponentially and seeing performance issue. ( currently there are 8000 servicechecks. Some of the hosts will be 20 fold on the number of service checks run on them soon.) 3. Ndoutils database has performance on quering some of these services. When run different instances with separate database their data set will be smaller and it will be easy to retain the data for longer time. Thanks in advance 1) How would we manage init.d script? are we going to use one init.d script to start all the process or should there be multiple init.d script? When I wanted to do this, I used one init.d script, heavily modified. 2) Do we need multiple nagios.cfg file for each instance or one nagios.cfg file separate parameter suche log_file with multiple argument. You'll need multiple nagios.cfg files so that the files that nagios writes to don't conflict. Nagios doesn't understand multiple arguments to things like 'log_file'. 3) Is there a possibility for namespace clash in cgi urls? I'm not sure but you may have issues if you enable the use of nagios environment variables? 4) Why do you think you need to run multiple instances of nagios? Check out my TNTMonitoringPlugin project on Sourceforge. There is a plugin specifically to monitor Exchange. It handles both Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007. It does monitor queue lengths as well as a few other factors, but the focus is not really so much on load. Queue length primarily is an indicator of network problems. A long send queue, in particular, tells me that the Internet connection is down, or something along those lines. If you look at the source code for the plugin, you can also see the WMI query used. Your interpretation will not work AFAIK. The post you reference is about limiting the maximum number of notifications sent to a contact. Your original question appears to be asking about how to send all notifications to 'an email address'. They appear to be opposite problem statements. Please restate your question, being as clear as you can about what you're trying to accomplish. For example, does 'all notifications' mean all notifications nagios would normally send for a specific service or a notification for every single non-OK service check? Does it mean all notifications for any host or service should all go to an arbitrary e-mail address? Does 'to an e-mail address' mean to a defined contact who is already in a contactgroup for that service or some other address? On the face of it, it seems to me you might just need to define a new contact and associate them with the host/service they should receive notifications about. P.S. I don't use escalations so be sure to respond to the list so that you expose your question to people who are more familiar with them, should escalations end up being what you need. -- Marc -- Come build with us! Re: [Nagios-users] orphaned
Eduardo, you should check Performance Info tab on the left pane. I am guessing your check latency is very high. Anyhow, I have ran into this situation in the past. Here are some things to check. 1) Increase debug information in your log and check nagios debug log. 2) Are you using NSCA, if you are make sure this is configured properly 3) Are you using Ndoutils, make sure the connection for ndoutils are correct and database is not experiencing any performance issue. 4) play around with the following parameters in your nagios.cfg check_result_reaper_frequency=10 max_check_result_reaper_time=20 5) make sure you read this document. http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/tuning.html On Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 6:25 PM, Eduardo Barreto lec...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, Nagios may seems to be working fine, but o nagios.log I'm getting this message initerrupted, does anyone can help me on this? Brian, First thing to check is version of NRPE? NRPE comes with two version, stripped and non-stripped. Make sure both machine has the same version running. [Nagios-users] Dependency and performance question
Hi, I am running nagios on a 2.5 GHZ 4-core 64 bit machine running RHEL5. I am seeing some performance issue in Nagios. I am doing failover setup. I have another similar machine which has identical config but not doing any active checks. My master machine sends check result using NSCA. Now I can not determine why my master machine is lacking in performace. I will paste my performance data below. I also have another question about dependency. 1) if a HOST is down, does the service checks still happens? I would like to setup a dependency where if host is down no service check should take place. How do I go about setting this up. An exapmple will be much appreciated. 2) How can I start troubleshooting my performance issue? Thanks in advance.
