Re: [Nagios-users] how to fix excessive latency

2010-06-28 Thread shadih rahman
There is something definitely not right here. We have about 1 checks
and the performance is lot better. Anyhow we are using the following values
check_result_reaper_frequency=10
max_check_result_reaper_time=20

You should enabled debug mode and check the debug logs. Are you writing to
any backend database? Are you using nsca to transfer service information to
remote location. what is the value of your status_update_interval? what is
your external_command_buffer_slots?

  Hi,guys~

 Our nagios server envrionment: Nagios3.2.0 + Suse10-sp2 x86_64 + 8 GB mem +
 4 x ( Xeon(R) CPU  E7420  @ 2.13GHz )
 We have 500+ active check hosts and 3k+ active check services. I have
 adjust some perfomance parameters in nagios.cfg, like below:
  use_large_installation_tweaks=1
 child_processes_fork_twice=0
 enable_environment_macros=0
 check_result_reaper_frequency=5
 max_check_result_reaper_time=30

 But, The nagios performance is still bad, like below:

Services Actively Checked:
 Time Frame Services Checked = 1 minute: 271 (9.4%) = 5 minutes: 1749
 (60.4%) = 15 minutes: 2824 (97.4%) = 1 hour: 2898 (100.0%) Since program
 start: 2869 (99.0%) Metric Min. Max. Average Check Execution Time:
 0.09
 sec 32.23 sec 1.113 sec Check Latency: 1.12 sec 212.59 sec 116.329 sec Percent
 State Change: 0.00% 23.88% 0.05%
 Hosts Acrively Checked:
 Time Frame Hosts Checked = 1 minute: 32 (5.5%) = 5 minutes: 419
 (71.5%) = 15 minutes: 586 (100.0%) = 1 hour: 586 (100.0%) Since program
 start: 586 (100.0%) Metric Min. Max. Average Check Execution Time:
 0.08
 sec 4.29 sec 3.035 sec Check Latency: 0.00 sec 135.25 sec 116.420 sec Percent
 State Change: 0.00% 11.32% 0.09%

  How could I find which services check or hosts check cause this seriously
 check latency?

1) if Nagios server notification is enabled?

 I've attached the patch to nagios-devel, dunno when it will be fixed

 Maybe another patch will follow but first I will first on Icinga :-)

[Nagios-users] nrpe configuration help

2010-06-07 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I need some suggestion for nrpe configuration. I have 3 different kind
of architecture in my setup. I have 32 bit linux machine (plugins installed
at /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory) , 64 bit linux machine (plugins
installed /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins directory), solaris machine (plugins
installed at /opt/libexec directory)

   In my nrpe.conf file I would three definitions like below

   [check_something]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_something
   [check_something_x64]= /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_something
   [cehck_something_unix]=/opt/libexec/check_somthing

 in my service definition, I would name them differently and call the
command file, for example I would have a check disk, disk_x64, disk_unix.
In commands.cfg file I would call them like

command_name check_remote
command_line $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c $ARG1$

However, now new requirements came in, where disk, disk_x64, disk_unix must
have same service name. I need to find a clever way define service disk and
call different nrpe command based on architecture. Can someone please help
me with this.  Thanks

[Nagios-users] Can an entity have more than one parent?

2010-05-28 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I am monitoring a set of vif behind csm. I want to control the amount
notifications. So basic idea is if the host is down don't bother sending
notification for the vif. So, I fiugure I would just create parent child
relationship with the host serving the page and vif name. However, one
problem is, all vifs are being served by two hosts. So I have two
questions.

1) Can a host have two parents?
2) What happen if only one of those parents go down?

Please advise on these.  Thanks

 for arguments sake), then you have to specify (in nrpe.cfg) the (single- or)

 Personally I tend not to use quoting in nrpe.cfg since in most cases it is
 not necessary, but there might be reasons to explicitly enclose such
 arguments in quotes.

Re: [Nagios-users] Designing distributed and failover architecture

2010-04-16 Thread shadih rahman
I have not implemented distributed nagios but I have failover setup. Few
comments I want to make

1) If you are using ndoutils for backend make sure you have looked at faster
speed up option. There is a patch for faster start up in opsview

2) if you using nsca to transfer acknowledgement and comments make sure you
do some research on that. scalability is a problem

3) remember to understand failover architecture properly. I have made few
mistakes when it comes to ndoutils. your ndomod data processing option
should be different on the failover from master server. Your master should
push configuration definitions into database but your failover should not
push theses configuration defitions in database.

4) Keep in mind scalability will be a problem. data retention is really a
difficult problem for large setup.

 as a fail over option managed via Linux HA/DRBD.
 What are some of the cons in following setup:

 - Primary and secondary(failover) Nagios servers managed by Linux
 HA/DRBD/cron etc. Have MySQL replication between them.
 - Primary Nagios server performing active checks via N DNX worker nodes in
 both datacenters.
 - Primary Nagios server monitoring DMZ hosts via NRPE (Custom regular

[Nagios-users] greedy regular experssion nrpe

I have a plugin script which does non-greedy regular expression search .
Which works fine when invoked locally on the machine. However when I call

   Thanks for your response. I am attaching the actual plugin in this

if ($_=~ qr/$xgrep/mo){

nrpe definition is something like this

command[check_filecontent_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_filetest -n

service definition is something like this

check_nrpe -H whatever -c check_filecontent_x64 -a filename .*foo* 1

 Happens here all the time. I have a Nagios check that looks for
 high numbers of NRPE processes and restarts it if it goes out of
 control.

 I'm not sure what causes it; the brute force method we're using here has
 been enough to keep it under control.

 The check I was referring to runs on the Nagios boxes (since that's

 does nothing but look for NRPE in the process list; it doesn't use NRPE

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios web GUI, contact groups, hosts and services

2010-02-08 Thread shadih rahman
Karssen,

Your problem appears to be process not the tool. I am not suggesting
how to conduct business in your organization but here is my suggestion.

I would reach out to noc management and put together a wiki or how to
for each unique possible critical alert scenario. The I would add the
notes_url parameter of Nagios to point to that particular wiki page.

   Only thing noc has to do click on the notes_url page and they will know
exactly what to do with the alert. Thanks

On Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 3:40 AM, L.C. Karssen lennart.kars...@snow.nlwrote:

 Dear list,

 I'm presently working on a Nagios 3.2.0 setup that monitors approximately
 1000 hosts and about 5000 services. The setup doesn't make use of Nagios'
 notification system, instead people at a control center (NOC) use the
 Nagios web interface to alert the appropriate people in case of an alert.

 The Nagios configuration is based on a set of host (group) templates,
 where services are assigned to host groups. For example: the 'check_swap'
 service definition is associated with the host group 'all unix hosts'.

 The problem I'm confronted with is that the people at the NOC don't need
 to see all services on a given host. For example, they shouldn't call the
 sysadmin at night if an SSL certificate check goes into critical state
 because the certificate is only valid for ten more days. So we want to
 remove that service from their view. In the present situation contact
 groups (used to determine which servers are visible to which department)
 are added to each specific host, but according to the Nagios docs
 (http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/cgiauth.html) a contact group can
 see _all_ services on a given host if it is listed as a contract group for
 the host.
 So I decided to remove the NOC contact group from the individual host
 definitions and to assign the NOC contact group only to specific services.

 This leads me to another problem. Some service checks (i.e. host groups)
 are used in one department only. This works fine.
 However, some other service checks (like check_swap for the 'all unix
 hosts' hostgroup) are shared by all departments, but some departments
 don't want the NOC to see check_swap alerts whereas others do want to pass
 these alerts to NOC. It would be possible to make services with slightly
 different names (e.g. check_swap_dept1, check_swap_dept2), each with the
 correct contact group. However, that seems to be a needless increase of
 complexity.
 Another approach would be to make host groups for each department and
 somehow change the service contact group for each host group.
 Unfortunately I haven't been able to get that to work.

 Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

 Lennart Karssen.

[Nagios-users] benchmark question

2009-12-14 Thread shadih rahman
List,
   Is there any information as to what is the maximum number of services one
can run on a single box with single instance of Nagios? I did not find any
concrete data on this.

I am running a single instance of nagios on a quad core 2.5 GHZ machine with
with 4 Gigs of RAM.

I have total of 7359 service check running on this box. I have also
ndoutils running on the same box as backend.

My total service checks is going to five fold very soon with a lot of nrpe
checks.

Now, my question is should I run multiple instance of nagios on the same box
or a single instance will be able to handle about 3 service checks?

I already tested a dev environment with multiple instance of nagios with
some hacking to init.d script, it started and monitored fine. What would be
the preferred method of running nagios, single instance on a box or multiple
instance on a box when we are dealing with high number of service checks?

Please comment on this.  Thanks

 I have received a good deal on a machine with 16G ram, 2xSSD-disks
 (maybe in raid-0), and 2xIntel E5520-CPUs. I would appreciate your input
 regarding the performance issues should I use Nagios for this system.

 Is this configuration powerful enough, what are the limiting parts of
 the setup and are some of the pieces unnecessary? I.e. I could go for
 one cpu (4 cores) if nagios does not support threading to 8 coresor
 is the main bottleneck that I do not run it distributed?

Re: [Nagios-users] What would you want in a replacement web interface?

2009-11-24 Thread shadih rahman
This is not an issue. nagios search bar does regular expression search. do
ffs-* in your box and it will result in all the hosts.

Nagios is a monitoring tool. I think nagios users and administrators are
some what involved with technology. Knowing how to do regular expression
search is not an extreme requirement.

 The lack of a real search. The select box is practically useless. For
 example, I have a bunch of hosts named ffs-whatever, but if I type in ffs-
 to the search box, I only get one result. I would really like a real (albeit
 simple) search so if I type ffs, I get ALL hosts containing ffs.

 Probably not, for a number of reasons, not least of which is that it

 First I've heard of it personally so it's use is likely to be limited.

 It has been applied on 15th of January 2009 and introduced some
 statements

 t-tm_isdst=-1;

 into base/utils.c.

 Affected are all Nagios versions = 3.1.0.

 I could reproduce it here: if the patch above is backed out, the
 scheduling behaves correctly.

 I've managed to get a libtap test case with the failure now. As you
 correctly say, removing the t-tm_isdst=-1 in utils.c fixes it.

 However, the fact it works is lucky.

 The check is that the scheduled time is between a date_range_start and a
 date_range_end. This date_range_end is based on the timeperiod definitions.
 However, an end point of 00:00 is calculated as 24*60*60. Obviously, this is
 wrong on the day that the clocks go back as there are 25 hours in that day.

 So removing tm_isdst gets the calculation for the epoch time wrong, but
 that luckily works because the time falls within the 24 hour period.

 I've applied the patch to remove that single tm_isdst.

 Tests are also added now, for this specific issue.

 Long term, I think it is correct that the isdst flag be set, but there are
 other problems that are lurking in the code, such as the calculation for the
 next appropriate time.

 Any comments?

Re: [Nagios-users] how to start nagios multiple instance

2009-10-23 Thread shadih rahman
Marc,
Thanks for your reply. The reason behind doing multiple instance is
described below.  Thanks

1) Previous monitoring system (survivor) was running multiple instance based
on different systems group.

2) I have been doing hostgroup and servicegroup along with contactgroup to
represent different instances of previous monitoring system. However its
growing exponentially and seeing performance issue. ( currently there are
8000 servicechecks. Some of the hosts will be 20 fold on the number of
service checks run on them soon.)

3. Ndoutils database has performance on quering some of these services.
When run different instances with separate database their data set will be
smaller and it will be easy to retain the data for longer time.

  1) How would we manage init.d script? are we going to use one
  init.d script to start all the process or should there be multiple

 When I wanted to do this, I used one init.d script, heavily modified.

  2) Do we need multiple nagios.cfg file for each instance or one
  nagios.cfg file separate parameter suche log_file with multiple
  argument.

 You'll need multiple nagios.cfg files so that the files that nagios
 writes to don't conflict. Nagios doesn't understand multiple arguments
 to things like 'log_file'.

  3) Is there a possibility for namespace clash in cgi urls?

 I'm not sure but you may have issues if you enable the use of nagios
 environment variables?

 4) Why do you think you need to run multiple instances of nagios? What
 are you trying to accomplish?

  Check out my TNTMonitoringPlugin project on Sourceforge. There is a
  plugin specifically to monitor Exchange. It handles both Exchange 2003
  and Exchange 2007. It does monitor queue lengths as well as a few other
  factors, but the focus is not really so much on load. Queue length
  primarily is an indicator of network problems. A long send queue, in
  particular, tells me that the Internet connection is down, or something
  along those lines.

  If you look at the source code for the plugin, you can also see the WMI
  query used.

 monitoring windows services, disk/memory/cpu; but I would like to have
 nagios look under the roof of the exchange server, and get me some #s for
 queue lengths.

  I guess this would be accomplished by WMI? I have not used WMI with
 NSClient++ before, does anyone have this setup in their environment for
 Exchange (or even IIS/ISA)?

  Please give some examples.

  Thank you..

Re: [Nagios-users] escalation for receiving only recovery events?

The best solution would be service escalation or host escalation feature of
nagios.

  A coworker wants to receive periodic notifies for failing services,
  and I want to receive only the first one. I can implement that using
  an inverted escalation (removing me from the notify list at the 2nd
  notification).

  However I *do* want to receive recovery events, even if they're after
  the 2nd notification. Is that configuration possible?

 Two different contact groups, yourself, and 'everyone else'..

 In the base check, put both groups, saying you want the options w,c,r. In
 the escalation, put just everyone else, with options w,c and
 first_notification of 2+.

 Or something like that ;)

Re: [Nagios-users] nagios notification to different email address

2009-09-22 Thread shadih rahman
My problem,

 I am trying to send a down and recovery message to a different contact
group than what is defined in host definition. Also I want to send only one
email to the new contact group. In the example below host A has contact
group C defined. However I want send my notification to contact group D.
Thanks

I have a host definiton like

define host {
host_name   A
hostgroups X
alias   A
address   A
contact_groups  C
check_period24x7
check_interval  15
retry_interval  3
max_check_attempts  3
notification_period extended
notification_interval   30
notification_optionsd,r,f
notifications_enabled   1
check_command   check-host-alive
}

I have a host escalation definition

define hostescalation{
hostgroup_nameX
contact_groups D
first_notification -1
last_notification  1
notification_interval  0
escalation_period  24x7
escalation_options d,r
}

 I'm not sure how you interpreted that to mean to put a '-1' for
 first_notification or even how it relates to your post. Your
 interpretation will not work AFAIK.

 The post you reference is about limiting the maximum number of
 notifications sent to a contact. Your original question appears to be
 asking about how to send all notifications to 'an email address'. They
 appear to be opposite problem statements.

 Please restate your question, being as clear as you can about what
 you're trying to accomplish. For example, does 'all notifications'
 mean all notifications nagios would normally send for a specific
 service or a notification for every single non-OK service check? Does
 it mean all notifications for any host or service should all go to an
 arbitrary e-mail address? Does 'to an e-mail address' mean to a
 defined contact who is already in a contactgroup for that service or
 some other address?

 On the face of it, it seems to me you might just need to define a new
 contact and associate them with the host/service they should receive
 notifications about.

 P.S. I don't use escalations so be sure to respond to the list so that
 you expose your question to people who are more familiar with them,
 should escalations end up being what you need.

We are using the following product for power panel related monitoring. It
has snmp module which you can monitor. Here is the link

Also for older power strip without snmp you can use this device to get power
related data. I hope this helps.

Eduardo,
 you should check Performance Info tab on the left pane. I am
guessing your check latency is very high. Anyhow, I have ran into this
situation in the past. Here are some things to check.

1) Increase debug information in your log and check nagios debug log.
2) Are you using NSCA, if you are make sure this is configured properly
3) Are you using Ndoutils, make sure the connection for ndoutils are
correct and database is not experiencing any performance issue.
4) play around with the following parameters in your nagios.cfg

check_result_reaper_frequency=10
max_check_result_reaper_time=20

5) make sure you read this document.

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/tuning.html

 Do you have 'is_volatile' enabled? Please post the entire service

 Nothing, you just don't know how nagios determines status. It's not
 the plugin text output, that's just for humans. Nagios determines OK,
 CRITICAL, etc from the exit code of the plugin.

  All commans are run from /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory;

  /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -H x -u /sample/test.html -p
  80 –a user:password -s TAPE
  Response:
  HTTP OK HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 0.018 second response time |
  time=0.018116s;;;0.00 size=3648B;;;0

 echo $?  - should be 0

  Now I run it with negate as you suggested:
  ./negate /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -H x -u /sample/
  test.html -p 80 –a user:password -s TAPE
  HTTP OK HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 0.006 second response time |
  time=0.006001s;;;0.00 size=3648B;;;0

 echo $? - should be 2

[Nagios-users] ndo nagios failover

2009-08-25 Thread shadih rahman
All,
I have two machines which are responsible for nagios monitoring. One is
master and one is fail over. I am also keeping historical data in
NdoUtils. I am using mysql for Ndoutils and they have master-master
replication. So in master I have active check and active notification
enabled. In fail over just the nagios process is running but there is no
active check and active notification. Both have identical configurations.

My question is Host A (master) is running NdoUtils and Host B (failover) is
also running NdoUtils. Although I have master-master replication, but is
there any possibility of proper copying of data from master to failover
database? Please advise on this. Thanks

 Which version of the plugins are you using, on which version of Nagios?
 There have been bugs in some versions of the plugin that might cause
 results like that, but there's not enough information here to know if
 that's the case with your issue.

vif3.com has parent C

I am checking the following url with check_http plugin

What I am trying to achieve is that if host A goes down none of services
with all three vif will not alert since they have parent/child

Re: [Nagios-users] NDOUtils mysql question?

2009-08-07 Thread shadih rahman
I would double check these information. Cacti runs on rrd( round robin
database). I have innodb for my ndoutils 1.47b.

On Fri, Aug 7, 2009 at 3:03 PM, Andrew Davis ncc...@gmail.com wrote:

  Our Nagios server also has Cacti on it. I'm pretty sure that Cacti uses an
 InnoDB database, while NDOUtils uses myISAM. The two are backed up
 differently (example: mysqlhotcopy doesn't working on InnoDB databases).
 Does anyone know what mysql command you run to determine which type of DB is
 used for various databases, especially considering you can run multiple
 types at once? I know I can use mysqlshow or the show databases; options
 to show the databases themselves, but it doesn't list the DB type. Using
 mysqlshow with a -t and a DB name shows the table types, but again, not the
 database types. I'm sort of stuck on this. I want to make sure I know what
 DB types I'm dealing with so I can ensure I'm backing them up properly.
 Google searches aren't helping... the results all go back to the mysql
 versus innodb debate...

[Nagios-users] Help with check_cluster plugin

2009-07-27 Thread shadih rahman
I am trying to monitor 3 exchange server and combined them with
check_cluster to report if there was any issue with them or not. If any of
my exchange server is down then my check_cluster should report down. So I
have 3 individual exchange checks as listed below

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE1.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex1!something!pasword
contact_groups  standard
}

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE2.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex2!something!password+
contact_groups  standard
}

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE3.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex3!something!password
contact_groups  standard
}

Now I have the following check_cluster check.

define  service {
use   standard
service_description  exchangestatus
servicegroups  Executive_dashboard
check_command
check_cluster_service!exchangecheck!0:0!0:0!$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE1.com:executive_exchange_check,$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE2.com:executive_exchange_check,$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE3.com:executive_exchange_check$
contact_groups  atg
}

First, my cluster check exchangestatus . does it need any association with
any hostgroup? I want Executive_dashboard servicegroup to show only one
exchangestatus check not three. I set the warnning and critical to be 0:0
and 0:0. I want anything but OK state to alert me. Is my threshold
setting correct? Please advise on this. Thanks

[Nagios-users] check ping explanation required

2009-07-14 Thread shadih rahman
Nagios uses check_ping for the host check of most hosts.

The check is configured to send only one ping.

So if Nagios receives a response, it is 0% packet loss.

If no response, it is 100% packet loss.

# 'check-host-alive' command definition
define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive
command_line$USER1$/check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ t 45 -4 -w
3000.0,100% -c 3000.0,100% -p 1
}

Yet, Nagios reports:

p...@bway2852-3-1.net.columbia.edu:2009-06-30 23:24:33:PING
OK - Packet loss = 85%, RTA = 47.06 ms

How is it possible for Nagios to lose 85% of one ping?

Re: [Nagios-users] monitoring load balanced url

2009-07-02 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I thought of this approach. I will create a service call
'check_public_url' on host1, host2, host3, host4, and etc.   Then I would
create another check which will use check_cluster plugin to check the
service status like below

./check_cluster -s check_public_url -d -w 0:50 -c 50:75

Am I approaching the right solution? Please advise on this. thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Issue with NRPE

2009-06-15 Thread shadih rahman
Sharada,
check the permission on the monitoring server for the actual plugin you
are calling. Make sure check_nrpe has the proper permission. Also make
sure you have the right version of nrpe and nrpe plugin. The nrpe server
and the check_nrpe has to be same version. I always found it easy to
install it from the source than working with prebuilt package. I hope this
works for you.  Thanks

 The /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg has been configured to allow monitoring server to

 NRPE is running on the mail server - /usr/sbin/nrpe -c /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg

 Now, On the monitoring server I see SSL handshake issue with NRPE.
 So,  tried - /check_nrpe -n -H hostname
 Now I get error saying - CHECK_NRPE: Error receiving data from daemon

 On the mail servr itself I get this error :

 Should I install anything else on the mail server?

 Assuming you've installed Nagios via RPM/up2date, then you can do:

 rpm -qa | grep nagios

 To see what Nagios-related packages you have installed. Then do a:

 rpm -qR nagios package name

 to see what packages Nagios requires. That's actually going to show what
 libraries and binaries are needed by Nagios, not the actual package names.

 If you installed Nagios by source, then you'll need to find a Nagios 2.5.x
 RPM, download it (don't install it)t, and do a:

 rpm -qpR rpm file

 to find out what it requires. Better yet, go to the package maintainers
 website and find the spec file that was used to build the RPM to find out
 what packages are required to install the RPM.

far as I understand NPC is for cacti only, however we have only cricket in
our organization. Please advise on this. Thanks

 try playing around with your check_result_reaper_* timings. I have a
 feeling that your check results are already stale before the reaper gets a
 chance to process them.

 tip: for a while, try setting max_check_result_file_age to 0 and see if
 you'd still get these errors. if not, then its a timing misconfiguration.

 Try the following and this should take care of it. Thanks

ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin /usr/lib/nagios/cgi

Directory /usr/share/nagios
#  SSLRequireSSL
  Options None
  AllowOverride None
  Order allow,deny

#  Order deny,allow
#  Deny from all
#  Allow from 127.0.0.1

 Hi Jimmy,

 You need to enable authentication in cgi.cfg.

 use_authentication=1

 authorized_for_all_service_commands=admin

 authorized_for_configuration_information=admin
 authorized_for_system_commands=admin
 authorized_for_system_information=admin

 Something like this in nagios.conf file for apache (On my linux box
 that is centos 5.x it is /etc/httpd/conf.d/nagios.conf)

 Directory /usr/lib/nagios/cgi
 #  SSLRequireSSL
   Options ExecCGI
   AllowOverride None
   Order allow,deny
   Allow from all
 #  Order deny,allow
 #  Deny from all
 #  Allow from 127.0.0.1
   AuthName Nagios Access
   AuthType Basic
   AuthUserFile /etc/nagios/htpasswd.users
   Require valid-user
 /Directory

 Alias /nagios /usr/share/nagios

 Directory /usr/share/nagios
 #  SSLRequireSSL
   Options None
   AllowOverride None
   Order allow,deny
   Allow from all
 #  Order deny,allow
 #  Deny from all
 #  Allow from 127.0.0.1
   AuthName Nagios Access
   AuthType Basic
   AuthUserFile /etc/nagios/htpasswd.users
   Require valid-user
 /Directory

 Now use htpasswd command to generate htpasswd.users file with user admin.

 htpasswd -c /etc/nagios/htpasswd.users   admin

Re: [Nagios-users] New to Nagios -- simple problem with data from nrpe

2009-04-17 Thread shadih rahman
Brian,
   First thing to check is version of NRPE? NRPE comes with two version,
stripped and non-stripped. Make sure both machine has the same version
running. If not, then play with the -n option to fix the incompatibility
issues. Then check if your nrpe.cfg where you define the actual checks are
the same on both nagios server and the monitored machine. I hope this
helps.

 I reckon its something simple that ive missed, but ive gotten a bit lost
 looking for it.

 Server:

 Rhel5.1

 Nagios-3.0.6 installed from source

 Plugins 1.4.13-4 from rpm

 Plugins-nrpe 2.12-6 from rpm

 Remote Server:

 Rhel4u6

 nagios-nrpe-2.5.2-1

 nagios-plugins-nrpe-2.12-6

 nagios-plugins-1.4.13-1.el4

 Thanks

 i would do the following

 - make sure that nrpe on the nagios server is connecting to the correct
 port at the nrpe server by comparing nrpe config files. (check encryption,
 port, privs, etc).
 - make sure that nrpe service on the clients are actually running and
 listening on the configured port.
 - check service and command definitions

 Also I would double check the nrpe pdf documentation -- there are examples
 there to get you up and running with nrpe.

I have master master replication setup for ndo. I ran into big log file
issue. I found this php script for log rotation and modified few things to
work on my setup. This works fine for me. I hope this helps.

 I don't know if you would need those binlogs, that's up to you

[Nagios-users] Dependency and performance question

2009-04-01 Thread shadih rahman
Hi,
   I am running nagios on a 2.5 GHZ 4-core 64 bit machine running RHEL5.  I
am seeing some performance issue in Nagios. I am doing failover setup. I
have another similar machine which has identical config but not doing any
active checks. My master machine sends check result using NSCA. Now I can
not determine why my master machine is lacking in performace. I will paste
my performance data below. I also have another question about dependency.

1) if a HOST is down, does the service checks still happens? I would like
to setup a dependency where if host is down no service check should take
place. How do I go about setting this up. An exapmple will be much
appreciated.

2) How can I start troubleshooting my performance issue?

Thanks in advance.

[Nagios-users] event handler question with nrpe

2009-03-24 Thread shadih rahman
can event handler take argument. I want to have a generic shell script
which take argument as to what process needs to start. I want to restart
process via nrpe. Can someone please verfiy if the following will work or
not?  Thanks in advance.

*

define service{
host_name   somehost
service_description HTTP
max_check_attempts  4
event_handler   restart-process.sh!my_proecess
...other service variables...
}

*

Once the service has been defined with an event handler, we must define that
event handler as a command. Notice the macros in the command line that I am
passing to the event handler - these are important!

define command{
command_namerestart-process.sh
command_line/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c
restart-process -a $SERVICESTATE$ $STATETYPE$ $SERVICEATTEMPT$
$SERVICEDESC$ 2 $ARG1$
}

maxattempts=$5

# We don't really care about warning states, since the service is
probably still running...

[Nagios-users] NRPE installation issue on solaris 9

2009-03-19 Thread shadih rahman
I am trying to install nagios plugins and nrpe on solaris 9. I am getting
the following error.

Nagios built with the following options:

$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/nrpe-2.12 --enable-command-args --disable-ssl

*** Configuration summary for nrpe 2.12 03-10-2008 ***:

 General Options:
 -
 NRPE port:5666
 NRPE user:nagios
 NRPE group:   nagios
 Nagios user:  nagios
 Nagios group: nagios

$ make all
[...]
gcc -g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -o nrpe nrpe.c utils.c  -lnsl -lsocket  ./snprintf.o
-liberty
nrpe.c: In function ‘get_log_facility’:
nrpe.c:617: error: ‘LOG_AUTHPRIV’ undeclared (first use in this function)
nrpe.c:617: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
nrpe.c:617: error: for each function it appears in.)
nrpe.c:619: error: ‘LOG_FTP’ undeclared (first use in this function)
make[1]: *** [nrpe] Error 1

Are there special Solaris patches for nrpe?
