[Nagios-users] Reporting emails

2011-06-06 Thread Tristan Drinkwater
Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to Nagios and I'm monitoring about 100 hosts, each doing several
checks and things are going great.

I'd like to take things up a notch by somehow getting emailed report daily and
weekly to tell me what host/services where down, when and for how long?

In essence I'm trying to create a systems issues report that I can give to my
directory to justify my existence.. :)

Many thanks.

Tristan

[Nagios-users] Reporting

2010-09-01 Thread Marius Roets
Good day,

What are popular applications used for reporting with Nagios. I have
installed NDOUtils, and data is being capture in a MySQL database. I could
process this data myself, but it would be nice if there was an application
that already did this.

This will give you both the business view ( if the VIP is down then the

This is for sure a good idea. On the other hand this would mean that we

You're not. Ninja has cluster-mode capabilities in its reporting tool.
Check it out if you're interested. Adding such a feature to the cgi's

time for it from work since we already have it in our own reporting
solution.

[Nagios-users] Reporting for redundant hosts

2010-05-20 Thread Stephan Tesch
Hello everyone,

I'm facing a problem for a long time now, having done some research on
this, but never been able to find a solution:

We're monitoring a lot of redundant network hosts (routers, firewalls,
etc.) where we have to report the uptime of the whole setup, not only
the uptime of a single component.

An example:

We have routerA and routerB, that form a HA setup. If one router is
taken down, for example to update its firmware, or simply crashes, the
whole setup still should have a reported uptime of 100%.

What I've already tried is to configure a cluster service. The problem
with this approach is, that I can't distinguish in the reporting whether
the host was down or unreachable, which is another crucial number to
report, also the downtimes don't get reflected very well.

I'm running Nagios 3.2.1 with NDOutils if that matters for the question.
Is there any plugin or addon that provides this functionality?

Many thanks,
Stephan

business is impacted) , and the operational view ( one device impacted ).

This is for sure a good idea. On the other hand this would mean that we
have to monitor another host and also plan for downtimes of this host,
too. An approach where I just define the redundant hosts and get the
report that I need would in my opinion be the better one. The data is
all there, it just has to be evaluated. I really can't believe, that I'm
the only one with this problem?

I don't know about your case, but what I do here if there are multiple
devices which support a single address is put all of them in Nagios as
Assaf mentioned. I'll then set the real hosts as the parents of the
virtual one, and if things are set up that way you *don't* need to worry
about setting downtimes for the virtual address, because it will
automatically be marked unreachable if all of the real addresses are down.

In my case, though, I primarily want to know if the VIP is working, and
am not quite as concerned with the individual hosts serving it (though
those are important as well, just not as important as if the service
they provide is available). Based on your statement that you'd have to
monitor another host, it sounds like knowing the state of this service
isn't really as important to you as knowing if the individual hosts that
serve it are working. Frankly, that seems a bit backwards to me, but I
don't really know your environment.

[Nagios-users] Reporting issue

2009-05-13 Thread Greg Martin
We;re currently using 3.06 in Production. We use a custom availability
timeframe to run reports every month to report availability data to
Mgmt. We noticed a change in behavior over the past couple months that
has us puzzled. When we run an availability report for the past month
and choose the custom report period, it reports the duration as 30
days. Seems logical as that is the elapsed time of the report, but in
the past, nagios would calculate that duration as the maximum
availability based on the custom timeperiod we used to generate the report.

To make this a bit clearer, if our Production time was 18 hrs/day M-F
and we defined that as Corp_Prod and we ran the report against it for,
say, April 09. Nagios would have reported the Duration as 396 hours
(22days x 18hrs/day).

However, in recent months we're noticing that Nagios report the calendar
duration of the report with no regard for the customer timeperiod.

Any ideas whether something has changed or if we're doing something wrong?

Thanks

\\Greg

[Nagios-users] Reporting from Nagios

2009-04-29 Thread Brian O'Mahony
I have just installed Nagios 3.0.6 and have it working monitoring a Windows and
a Linux host. I will add more hosts to it, once I have finished evaluating.
However Im a bit boggled with all the options, and not sure exactly which way
to procede with what I wanty to do, so thought id ask a few questions about the
reporting aspect.

1. Is there a way to have a host/service monitored 24x7 but only send one mail
when it goes unknown/critical, and another when its ok again? The reason for
this is if I keep getting multiple mails every little while, I will just filter
them off and not bother with them which will defeat the purpose. Either on a
per service or per host basis is fine for me (or even a hostgrou[ basis).

2. Is there a way for example if all hosts in a group stop responding to send a
single mail, rather than one for all hosts? I intend to put the hosts in groups
based on which rack they are in, and would rather not get 30+ mails if the
power to the rack goes.

That's about all I can think of right now, but the documentation has me a
little confused.

Thanks in advance

Not really, unless you use some external notification aggregator or

[Nagios-users] Reporting

2008-03-14 Thread Fabiano Martins
Hi,

I would like to know if anyone know some interesting tool to give
nagios availability report to users that have to know about their
hosts.

I've used a perl script already (nagios-reporter), from nagios
exchange that provide these reports trought email but the format is
not easy to understand and the presentation is not good for custumers.

I'm looking for two ways of giving reporting access to the custumers.

One is trought an email with the information, and the other one should
be an user interface that the custumers can go there and check for.

Any idea will be welcome

Regards,

Fabiano Martins

[Nagios-users] reporting

2006-11-14 Thread Brian Loe
I've played with a couple of reporting scripts from nagios exchange -
with little success. Does anyone have one that they KNOW works on the
latest, stable version of Nagios and can provide availability for a
particular hostgroup? Or, conversely and probably preffered, a list of
outages for each host in a particular hostgroup?

Changing polling interval to 2 minutes was a no-brainer, I guess it
had just been awhile since I messed with the configuration files.

Newest version of nagios, being 2.5 or the unreleased 3.0 version?

I'm running 2.4 with all the standard CGI's which is what it was built to
work with. It uses the CGI's standard reporting features, and should work
as-is unless the CGI's have changed dramatically between Nagios 2.4 and
2.5. If you are using 3.0 then I wish you the best of luck but can't

This reporter is meant to be run from the command prompt, say from cron,
and you need to edit the appropriate configuration variables (as documented
in the file).

I'm getting an empty e-mail as well. The first version of the plugin
works for me in Nagios 2.4. It dumps the CSS into the e-mail, which you
can easily then download the e-mail as a file and view it with your

Hmm okay. Looks like a problem with the MIME encoding. What mail reader
are you using?

If you re-run the perl script with the --debug=2 flags then it may show you
what the error is.

If there are no errors visible, then your email reader may have a problem
with the MIME inline .

Try commenting out lines 326, 237 and 238 which are the second part of the
MIME attatchment. The lines should look like

326   $smtp-datasend(--boundary\n);
327   $smtp-datasend(Content-type: text/plain\n);
328   $smtp-datasend(Please read the attatchment\n);

Make sure you only remove those lines.

If that doesn't work, then please mail me (directly) the script output, and
attatch the file /tmp/nagios-report-htmlout.html

Cheers
Rob Moss.

Hi Rob,

I'm using both Squirrelmail webmail, and Thunderbird 1.5 with the same
results. No errors are displaying with debug=2 and the output file
completely empty. I know permissions are ok, and the file is actually
created, but nothing is inserted into it.

Do you still want me to attach the script output directly?

Okay, found the problem.

Sorry guys, in my haste to bash out a version without the CSS embedding
code, i made a schoolboy error. This has now been fixed.

You can fix the error by moving line 91 to line 77 (outside of the if
statement)
The line is $mailbody = http_request($reporturl); which fetches the
report.

I have uploaded a new verison to the website, version 1.3.1

My problem with your plugin is that I just get an empty e-mail, which
I'm forwarding here (less my company's warnings of confidentiality and
such).

I'm running 2.4 with all the standard CGI's which is what it was built to
work with. It uses the CGI's standard reporting features, and should
work
as-is unless the CGI's have changed dramatically between Nagios 2.4 and
2.5. If you are using 3.0 then I wish you the best of luck but can't
 provide any help.

If you know which URL to request to get the report you want: Simply wget
it and write a small script to tuck it in a nice email message.

How'd you get the URL? I thought that seemed like a simple enough idea
but then quickly realized that you just get a button to create the
report - once its built the URL doesn't appear in the address bar,
presumably because its a temporary page (??). I would definitely like
a weekly and monthly report - but I'd also like to pick and choose the
options I want as well (presumed state, for instance).

Short answer - yes. Webinject. It's a free tool with Nagios *and* MRTG
support, and we use it here for several sites. It's a bit awkward to
configure but it supports cookies and session IDs.

We also wrote one on-site that worked slightly differently, but ended up
using webinject instead.

If you have lots of these-$ then you can also get some commercial tools
like SiteScope that can send alerts to Nagios via NSCA (can call an
external script that calls send_nsca). SiteScope is easier to
configure, but costs a lot and only runs under Windows.

Steve

Not directly with Nagios. There are a number of add-ons that will graph
that kind of data through nagios --

http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Charts.42.0.html

or

You can use performance data processing to store that information in a
DB or other external entity for your own uses

Or

You can use a tool like cricket or cacti to track that outside nagios.

but Nagios has AFAIK, no means of capuring event related data and
associating it with an outage
event to produce something like

In this case, cause is a coded value that classifies the fault and the
comment is free form text.

The best I can think of to create something like this is to

1 Append the outages to a file - possibly by having an event handler
run the code that extracts the outage from the availability CGI -
or better still all the data for an outage is prob provided by macros -
for the host or service and appending that to a file.

2 Have an admin edit the file and add the values when they become known.

The guts of the problem is Nagios does the right thing by automatically
changing the state of monitored entity; there is no opportuntity to
'officially' close the 'fault' by collecting user-input and associating
it with an outage. Looked at another way, outages don't really exist as
first class objects (with their own methods and data).

All comments are very welcome,

Yours sincerely.
