Hi all

To send sms notifications, I am using since 2003 a couple of radiomodem,
connected via serial to my server and smstools SW.

Now, I need something "stronger" compared that configuration because for
specific checks I have to send many and many sms at the same time.

What can I use ?

Similarly, we use a Motorola Razr V3 mobile phone connected via USB
cable to the Nagios system and send our alerts using the gammu software
as well. We have the phone on an SMS-only plan from T-Mobile.

We've had some issues with signal strength to the mobile phone but
relocating the mobile, using an active USB cable to overcome the
distance, to a different location in the datacenter resolved that issue.

Good luck!

Hi Marco

I use a Nokia 6021 mobile phone hooked up via USB using the gammu software,
and I write all my sms alerts to a MYSQL database, an sms daemon then scans
the database and sends out any that are in the outbox table through the
connected mobile phone.

I have tested this with 243 sms alerts all going out at the same time
(killed a VPN link) and it worked flawlessly (although did take approx. 15
minutes to send all alerts)

Hope this is helpful

For free sms you can use icq sms (if available for your country)

I have connected a cell phone (nokia) to a windows xp box...
Installed nokia pc suit
Installed Microsoft sms sender
Enabled telnet on the windows box
Created a BAT file with the sms sender syntax
Used BAT2EXE to convert the file to exe
Created a expect script on the linux BOX to telnet to the windows and
execute the sms script.

My opinion is that using a cell phone is better than some external SMS
gateway...
Because if your internet fails.. how will you reach the external SMS
gateway?

Count yourselves lucky, here in New Zealand they charge you to use it in
either direction. You need to pay to allow people to email your phone,
and/or you need to pay to allow yourself to email to SMS.

New Zealand mobile operators really screw the customer. Prices are
astronomical compared to Europe or the USA.

The cheapest way for us was to get a phone and connect it to a linux box
making our own email to SMS gateway. Of course, you mustn't tell the phone
company you're doing this or else they want to charge you on a different
(much higher) billing plan...

[Nagios-users] SMS notifications

2008-06-16 Thread Luc MAIGNAN
Hi,

I know this is a recurrent question, but I'm sure all solutions are not
available on all countries while sending SMS depends on countries
operators .

So I am in France and I want to send SMS notifications via Nagios when a
critical (and only critical) state of a service is reached.

Does anyone know a solution for France ?

You are correct. I had never added the host-notify-by-sms to my contact
entry.

Thanks for your help!

Not really related but $SERVICEDESC$ and $SERVICESTATE$ will always be
null for a host notification. You should remove them.

Not likely since $HOSTOUTPUT$ wasn't valid then ;) In any event, I think
they worked fine under 1.3 and you're seeing your current results
because host-notify-by-sms is never actually used. Do you really have
contact definitions that use host-notify-by-sms? It would seem more
likely that they all use notify-by-sms for both
service_notification_commands and host_notification_commands.

You're using service-specific macros in a host notification.

[Nagios-users] SMS Notifications - Incomplete Output on Host Notification

2007-06-05 Thread Stover, Beth
Hi,

I've fully migrated to Nagios 2.8. My only problem seems to be that
host notifications to my cell using sms_client have incomplete output.
Service notifications using sms_client to my cell work just fine. I'm
guessing this is just some kind of formatting problem on my command
definition.

Here are my notification command definitions:

# 'notify-by-email' command definition (ORIGINAL)
define command{
command_name notify-by-email
command_line echo -e 'Notification Type:
$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\n\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost:
$HOSTALIAS$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERV
ICESTATE$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n\nAdditional
Info:\n\n$SERVICEOUTPUT$' | /usr/bin/mail -s ' $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$
(service_alert) - $HOSTALIAS$/$
SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$ ' $CONTACTEMAIL$

}
# 'host-notify-by-email' command definition
define command{
command_namehost-notify-by-email
command_lineecho -e "Notification
Type:$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nState:
$HOSTSTATE$\nAddress:$HOSTADDRESS$\nInfo: $HOSTOUTPUT$
\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n" | /usr/bin/mail -s "$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$
(host_alert) - Host $HOSTNAME$ is $HOSTSTATE$" $CONTACTEMAIL$
}

# 'notify-by-sms' command definition
define command{
command_namenotify-by-sms
command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
'$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
($SERVICEOUTPUT$)'
}

#'host-notify-by-sms' command definition
define command{
   command_namehost-notify-by-sms
command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
'$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
($HOSTOUTPUT$)'
}

Email notifications work fine. Service notifications via SMS work fine.
Only the hsot notifications via SMS do no t work correctly.

Here's the output I do receive from the host notification via SMS:

Recovery:
Server1: is ()

These command definitions worked fine on my Nagios v 1.3 system.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

yes i should have said - we use qpage to send the page via the modem to
the carrier and then they send it off to our pagers. we tried SMS v's
pager and prefer pager as they are less easy to sleep through and we
found reliability was better - we had too many SMS's just vanish

I can help you to set up SMS'ing with a modem that has a SIM-card in.
Obviously there will be costs involved with the SIM-card.
Give me ahsout if you want to go that route.

We are using yaps to send sms notifications via ISDN to cell phones.

I use 'qpage', which drives a direct attach modem, through a dedicated
analog line.

Most cell phone providers, including Verizon, support using the TAP
protocol to send messages to mobile phones as text messages.

In my shop we just treat cell phone notifications the same as email
notification. For instance, Verizon Wireless customers who have text
messaging can receive pages by sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
where ## is the telephone number of the cell phone you are
sending email to.

I also have a "front end" (middle end?) script for cell phones that
chops a notification up into chunks that don't overflow the cell phone's
text size limit and sends them out as multiple pages.

well, you could just use gnokii or something like that and have a
mobile phone connected directly to the nagios server, although I
haven't tried this myself.

it does mean that there is a completely separate route for gettng
alerts.

we send pages (no sms) using a modem on the nagios box and then this
routes to the pager supplier - Relying on email or email-to-sms gateway
is dangerous as what happens if all connectivity fails - your alerts do
not get through.

I agree mostly, but I'd like to send SMS messages via a directly
connected modem or wireless phone.

On that subject, anyone have information on installing a blackberry on

we send pages (no sms) using a modem on the nagios box and then this
routes to the pager supplier - Relying on email or email-to-sms gateway
is dangerous as what happens if all connectivity fails - your alerts do
not get through.

I've seen a few options IRL:
* attach a cellphone to your server and install SMS sending software
* subscribe to an email-to-SMS gateway
* subscribe to another SMS provider
* ???

Cheers!

[Nagios-users] SMS notifications to a cell phone

2006-10-05 Thread Yogesh Hasabnis
Hi All,

I am in the process of setting up nagios for monitoring key services in
our network setup. I have already tested and used the email method of
sending notifications using Sendmail as my relay host. I would be
grateful if I get some pointers for sending notifications using SMS to
a cell number, in case of service failures and recoveries. I went
through the nagios docs. They have mentioned  quite a few options
for using SMS as a notification method. But it seems that one needs to
subscribe to the services of a service provider to use any of those
options. And the service provider should be providing services in your
country/location. Is it possible to use this notification without
subscribing to any specific paid service ?

I am extremely sorry if this question has already been answered before.

Thanks In Advance

Yogesh

Hi there, I’ve installed
sms tool for sms-notification. The
daemon works ok but how do I setup nagios to send service notifications by sms?

I’ve defined the following command but it is not working.

define command{

command_name    notify-by-epager

command_line    TMPFILE=`mktemp
/var/spool/sms/tmp/temp.XX`;/usr/bin/printf "%b" "To:
$CONTACTPAGER$\n\n$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nAddress:
$HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\nInfo: $SERVICEOUTPUT$\nDate:
$LONGDATETIME$"> $TMPFILE;mv $TMPFILE /var/spool/sms/outgoing

    }

Any suggestions?

thanks
