Re: Identifying submarine links via traceroute

2021-09-29 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Nice challenge.

Check out infrapedia.com where you can see length of cables and this may
help you “guess” latency but given so many cables are within 5-10ms in some
paths there may be false positives

A very good topic to work on.

Re: APG: 100 Gig Wave: Singapore/TY3

2021-03-18 Thread Mehmet Akcin
There is no capacity issue on this cable. The way this cable operates is
that it’s segmented and not everyone has access to every segment. For
Singapore to TY3 Starhub is your best choice (and possibly only) to work
with. NTT has also capacity but they are extremely hard to get in touch and
get paperwork (like kmz, etc) with. Starhub is simple(r-ish)..

95th billing and automation

2020-12-10 Thread Mehmet Akcin
hi there,

i have asked about this in the past. What is the best tool out there to do
95th percentile billing. I have decided to use observium and librenms as
result of responses but there seems to be some kind of billing module issue
with these tools (thy are basically the same code).

What are other systems besides observium and librenms (and old
fashion cacti) people are using these days with 95th billing and
integration with a CRM like salesforce/zoho, etc. I appreciate the
responses.

We've tried this, disabled google because the spam came from 1000s of Gmail
accounts actually, also had the same issue with Facebook end disabled
that.. it's not like we are not trying to solve this, one idea was to
create an account demo/demo and let people just login with that without
requiring registration but then the problem is we have no way of tracking
buy capacity requests... i am sure we just need a web developer help us ;)
thinking this as network engineer isn't really the best way to come up with

hey there,

I recently have come across this http://ping.pe/ website, I have no
association with this but it's pretty awesome. This made me wonder what
other tools out there which I do not know about it.

what are your favorite network troubleshooting tools?

In addition to ping.pe, I like https://bgp.he.net but would love to hear
your thought about other tool recommendations as especially the ones that
are distributed.

pandemic stories about network ops/engineering

hey there,

Millions of people working from home, I am sure there was a lot of hard
work from network and systems teams to build and upgrade capacity before
and during the covid19 pandemic.

I have a youtube series I am focusing on internet infrastructure and new
normal, I would like to discover new stories about how network teams have
handled unique stories during this time. Something different where you
think it's important for people to know.

I think there are many heroes who made this stay at home possible with
enabling technology and my goal is to give these individuals a little bit
visibility they deserve. For example youtube stream

infrastructure focused interviews and questions

2020-06-22 Thread Mehmet Akcin
hi there,

I've started a few weeks ago hosting a youtube/twitch/twitter live video
show (simultaneous stream) hosting key people who are involved in the
exec/operations/engineering of internet infrastructure companies either as
consumer or service providers.

my idea is to create a platform where questions/concerns can be asked
directly to executives/key decision-makers and hopefully get answers. Very
similar to Reddit AMA but with focus on
telecom/datacenter/infrastructure/DNS/etc.

For example, I will have execs from zayo, Windstream, aqua comms, packet
fabric this week as my guests where you will be able to ask
questions directly. There will be also a 1-1 discussion with APNIC's Chief
Scientist Geoff Houston about internet growth during lockdowns, and more.

you can watch the shows live, ask questions and be part of the conversation
from all these platforms.

example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff4x9IwBHEI starting in 15 minutes
with Windstream.

fblive https://www.facebook.com/infrapediainc/videos/270701217367462/

twitter https://twitter.com/mhm7kcn

if you have recommendation on speakers you want to see, ask questions, you
can contact me offlist.

I thought I would share this here, I am sorry if this is off-topic. Invite
people to participate, ask questions, and more.

hey there,

I just wanted to share my experience dealing with ARIN support this week. I
think it's not very common to see people taking the time to write something
like this but I personally think we should do more often.

It has been long time since I had to deal with RIRs and this week I had to
do several things in ARIN. The support has team was very quick responding,
very useful with their recommendations to my questions, and had a great
attitude towards solving problems. I can certainly say they went above and
beyond when I opened a ticket with wrong request type and they asked me if
they can close it and open a new one for me? I mean.. this is called going
Above and Beyond!

thank you all ARIN support desk and especially Lisa Liedel for this great
experience. and @John Curran please accept this sincere
thanks on your team's behalf!

infrapedia 2.0

2020-05-13 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is doing in these crazy times.

I am delighted to announce Infrapedia 2.0 which is a complete code overhaul
from the previous version of Infrapedia. You can visit infrapedia 2.0
https://infrapedia.com and published open-source code
https://github.com/infrapedia

For those who missed the original announcement, what is Infrapedia?

A tool that visualizes network and data center information and helps create
custom views integrate with websites, monitoring tools (soon librenms),
etc. One of the long time projects we have been working on is
near-real-time crowdsourced network availability data. (think about Waze
for fiber cut, ix outages, and other important information) (not focusing
for home users but rather a long haul, metro fiber networks, ixps, dcs)

We've had to rewrite our code in order to be able to give new abilities to
users such as integrating with your monitoring systems to overlay
information, connecting owners of the fibers with buyers
without middle-man, give the ability for people to use the data in custom
formats for research as we did with Northeastern University,
https://blog.infrapedia.com/2020/05/12/case-study-custom-map-services/

we've created a slack to continue discussions and get more direct feedback
from everyone who is interested, you can join our slack by clicking here
https://join.slack.com/t/infrapedia/shared_invite/zt-em3btj80-jj0iGlG7jkAjPkrwlwWhVg

I appreciate all of the volunteer's time who spent the time providing
feedback, make recommendations, and more.

network billing software

2019-12-07 Thread Mehmet Akcin
hi there,

as a small isp network billing is done right is quite important. I do not
want to reinvent the wheel though.

I have been using librenms and I do think I need a tool that can be more
automated and more turn-key. I have looked into cacti, and also Ubersmith.
I wanted to check in here and ask what people are using to see if I can
find something more commonly known.

I would like as much as automation possible (auto email of the bill, etc.)
and if it can integrate with quickbooks even better. 95th percentile
billing is a must. let me know what your recommendations are.

is there any limitation of where an SLTE can be placed in terms of distance
from PFE?

I have looked in to usual palaces and i was unable to confirm there is any
requirements for any distance. Any cons can you guys think of that you want

I can’t find a single cls that is a good peering spot

Latam has level3 cls in chile which is good location and has lots of
networks ixp. That is like only one I am aware, doing business is quite
horrible there.

Everything is over priced, slow burocraric.

Landing Stations used as datacenter

2019-11-14 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Hey there

I have been putting my thoughts on Infrapedia blog and sharing with folks
like

https://www.infrapedia.com/post/top20cities-datacenters

I am working on a new article and this time my topic will be looking at
cable landing stations(cls). Do you consider cable landing stations as a
datacenter? Do you have any experience deploying a pop in CLS? Are you able
to share (on or off record) your experience which I can refer as your
experience (good or bad) why deploying a pop inside a CLS is good or bad
idea. Any additional comments..

I am not a big fan of CLS deployments. They have limited networks ( like
only carriers and no eyeballs) and very expensive connectivity (usually)

Thank you in advance sharing your experience

Hey there,

Puerto Rico IX , famously known as PRIX , is now operational.

You can visit www.puertoricoix.net to see sites you can connect to PRIX,
members and join Ix mailing list.

There are no fees to join the IX. We hope to keep this, this way until
there is enough interest to form a non profit org.

I would like to thank once again Aeronet, Arista and Cloudsmash for their
donations of equipment , time and energy!

Now, we are looking for those who want to deploy 1-2RU caching boxes
anything from DNS to Content.

We are working on more stats/looking glass, etc soon!

thanks in advance.

Asset management recommendations

2019-08-23 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Hey there

I am looking for a tool recommendation for network and server asset
management which can scale in multiple sites and integrate with other
platforms like nagios, librenms. Being able to do patch management is plus.
Mostly linux and juniper shop

Any recommendations?

Mx204 alternative

2019-08-07 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Greetings,

I am looking for some suggestions on alternatives to mx204.

Any recommendations on something more affordable which can handle full
routing tables from two providers?

Prefer Juniper but happy to look alternatives.
Min 6-8 10G ports are required
1G support required

Thanks in advance!

there is nothing about telecoms in this map, it's all about powerlines.

What can ISPs do better? Removing racism out of internet

2019-08-04 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Ok, two mass shootings, touchy topic, lots of emotions this weekend. Going
straight to the point.

Most of us who operate internet services believe in not being the moderator
of internet. We provide a service and that’s it. Obviously there are some
established laws around protecting copyrights, and other things which force
us to legally take action and turn things down when reported.

What can we do better as network operators about hate sites like 8Chan?

I applaud cloudflare’s (perhaps slightly late) decision on kicking 8chan
off its platform today after El Paso attack.
https://blog.cloudflare.com/terminating-service-for-8chan/

I am sure there are many sites like this out there, but could network
operators do anything to make these sites “not so easy” to be found,
reached, and used to end innocent lives?

Re: Best ways to ensure redundancy with no terrestrial ISPs

2019-08-04 Thread Mehmet Akcin
Keith,

thank you for your response, I think this is slightly becoming offtopic, I
will take this offlist with you but in short, that's not how GeoServer
works (or mainly GIS when displaying things publicly) for something to be
displayed to you, it needs to make it available, and if it's available it
can be downloaded with codes/programs that allow you to, we are preventing
this by forcing users to log in that way someone can't simply launch a
script and get all of the data available in our platform (or if they do, we
would notice, know who and stop it via rate-limits). I am neither a
security nor GIS expert, I am relying on what I was told/advised.

Re: Best ways to ensure redundancy with no terrestrial ISPs

2019-08-04 Thread Mehmet Akcin
thank you for the feedback. It's quite challenging to keep a high scale,
open, a free platform without having ads, they are designed to be easily
closed and should you have problem with it, I am happy to help understand
and hear recommendations.

I understand and share your frustration about forcing account registration.
We had no other way but to implement this as constantly we had sources
trying to download our data by examining our code. By having access
controls we were able to stop that. My team had recommended user data
controls after reviewing Geoserver, mapbox requirements, if you know any
other way please feel free to recommend.

every feedback is welcome, we are trying to build a tool which is free,
open, and hoping to develop and make it even better with recommendations
like this.

Re: Puerto Rico Internet Exchange

2019-08-04 Thread Mehmet Akcin
thank you for reaching out offlist.

We've received our core switching hardware (thank you Arista for donating
these) and identified 5-7 potential different sites which we can be
colocated, however, we will start with two that are diversely connected
with each other. somewhere others can go deploy 1-2 rack deployments,
easily.

what do we need now? we will go to Puerto Rico and go rack
hardware/servers/cable etc if you have any way to help (you might be living
there, etc.. feel free to reach out)

an IX without networks to peer is well not an IX. so if you are able to
make deployments using 1-2rack unit servers, or even virtual servers (DNS,
etc..) feel free to contact me offlist. We would like to have in general,
root-servers, TLDs, CDN caches, etc. these all peer with ix.

regarding costs of ix - we will be following a model where "members share
all costs", at the beginning our ultimate goal is to keep these costs to an
absolute minimum. Any other recommendations, please feel free to reach
offlist. next, I hope to share some peering utilization numbers.

We are thinking about adding wireless networks too and maybe overlaying
national cell phone coverage maps

Looking glass software

2019-08-01 Thread Mehmet Akcin
hey there,

I am looking for a public looking glass software that is used by many.
Github has way too many dead projects (or projects that seem like dead) and
appreciates community feedback on what's the best out there.

my goals are to be able to provide, ping/ping6, traceroute/traceroute6, and
route views.

Mehmet
