Captive portal for suspended accounts

2023-09-11 Thread Steve Saner via NANOG
We are a combination fiber and fixed wireless ISP with around 20k
subscribers.

Management is wanting to develop something along the lines of a captive
portal for suspended accounts such that those customers are forced to a
portal that allows them to make payment and get reactivated.

This is a common thing for a cafe wifi hotspot or something, but has anyone
here attempted to do it at this kind of scale who would be willing to share
their experiences? If someone has successfully done this, I would love to
pick your brain a bit to understand how you accomplished it.

Thanks much.

The issue is not an understanding of how to run the system. The issue is
that it isn't our core business and we want to minimize/eliminate the money
and time needed to maintain the infrastructure and support the services.

The current platform is a custom collection of open source software, smtp,
imap, pop, webmail. Web hosting is a basic LAMP stack all php 5.2 or
greater. There is no interest in growing these services.

Email and Web Hosting

2021-07-06 Thread Steve Saner
I hope this isn't too far off topic for this list.

We acquired a small ISP a couple years ago that has its roots in the "local
ISPs" of the 90s. This ISP is still hosting email and web services for
customers both on company domains as well as customer domains. There is
some decent revenue coming from these services, but cost of maintenance is
becoming a challenge. We are looking at migrating to another platform or
completely discontinuing those services.

I'm wondering if others here have gone through that process and have any
advice as to how to go about it.

CGNAT

2021-02-19 Thread Steve Saner
We are starting to look at CGNAT solutions. The primary motivation at the
moment is to extend current IPv4 resources, but IPv6 migration is also a
factor.

We've been in touch with A10. Just wondering if there are some alternative
vendors that anyone would recommend. We'd probably be looking at a solution
to support 5k to 15k customers and bandwidth up to around 30-40 gig as a
starting point. A solution that is as transparent to user experience as
possible is a priority.

Thanks

I had the same issue show up with a netblock that we used to route for a
customer. That netblock has now been allocated to someone else and they
contacted me to see if we could get it removed from the IRR as it was
causing them some trouble.

I still have a circuit with Level3/CenturyLink, so I ended up opening a
trouble ticket through the customer portal on that circuit and explained
my need.

I got a response back that it had been removed from the BGP filters, so
I had to explain that while that's find and good, I'm really needing it
removed from the IRR.

The response back after that was that it isn't in the IRR. I wrote back
showing that it in fact was in the IRR.

After a couple days of no response I commented the ticket again asking
for the issue to be escalated. Finally got a response back that it had
been removed.

Took about a week total.
