We've seen issues in the past where our upstream ISP had to de-peer with
Google in the Detroit IX as the Google side seemed to be eating traffic,
sending everything via L3/Chicago usually fixed it.

They're having an issue or two. Notably, the inability to display or 
access Contacts, and certain other things (such as the ability to change 
to the older version, which only gives errors). Crazy world, when a 
public mail provider can have such an effect on folks. So it goes.

We don't use gmail for any of our services, but a lot of our ISP
customers use gmail.  So when they see gmail being down, they assume
that their internet connection is down or that we are the reason that
gmail is not working.

Thank goodness my Yahoo email account is still working.  Don't we have
enough
conversations here about diversity and redundancy at the network layer for
people
to realize it's good to have similar diversity and redundancy at the
application layer
as well?  (yes, I have accounts on both systems, and use them both actively)

i recently explored webmail for my family and found prayer, which is a
pure C application (no php, no perl) built on the uw-imap c-client library.
it's blindingly fast even for thousands of huge mailboxes stored in MH
format.  anyone who was using the cloud because they couldn't stand the
poor performance of the apache-based webmail systems should take a look.

London (UK) - mail is up over IMAP. The contacts list/chatbox in Gmail is a
Web wrapper around their Google Talk XMPP server, which I use through a

We have about 41,000 registered users of which about 25,000 log in to
webmail in a busy week (about 850,000 logins per week, 6 or 7 million HTTP
requests per day). We run Prayer on a single PC with 8GB RAM and one dual
code 2GHz Xeon CPU. Mailboxes live on separate Cyrus IMAP servers.

I guess gmail is working everywhere on the globe again.
We encountered the same problems here in Austria (web, imap was working all
the time), too, but everything seems to be fine at the moment.

Many of our users had difficulty accessing Gmail today. The problem is now 
resolved and users have had access restored. We know how important Gmail is to 
our users, so we take issues like this very seriously, and we apologize for the
