Re: NUnit 2 support (was: RE: [nant-dev] FAQ: The next NAnt version)

2002-11-22 Thread Ian MacLean
I agree that a lot of those tasks should be rolled into the main NAnt
project. I think there is still a place for NAntContrib as a place for
user submissions. The idea being that there is a lower barrier of entry
to the contrib project and the best - ie useful to most people tasks get
moved into the main project over time. Certainly all the framework tasks
should move to NAnt.

Ian

But since we are on a related topic: Does anyone think there's still a
place for the NantContrib project? I've been thinking about this for a
while, and my POV is that with the large NAnt refactoring that was done last
time, most of NantContrib's tasks could be rolled into the appropriate NAnt
assemblies most are fairly mature now, and some tasks in nantcontrib
really belong there... I'm not sure if it's worh it to keep them separated
anymore.

Any thoughts?

Subject: [nant-dev] FAQ: The next NAnt version

Hello,

Every few months since the latest release, someone asked when the latest
NAnt version was going to be replaced. This was no coincidence.

Problems:
- The latest non-CVS NAnt version (0.7.9.0) dates from June 11.
- Too often, problems are reported that were fixed a long time ago or
are related to NAnt/NAntContrib confusion.
- Many support seeking NAnt users need to be directed to the CVS version
of the day, which is the 'recommended' version.
- NAnt dependencies, from NAntContrib to build servers, should have a
NAnt version to be compatible with.

In short, bringing out a new release (0.8.0) is needed.
Note: A combined NAnt + NAntContrib package Would Be Nice as well, but
first things first.

I suggest a no-new-features-are-needed approach for this version.
The question is: What really *needs* to be done before the new version
can be released?

I am aware of the NUnit to NUnit 2 migration, and have been able to use
the latest NAnt and NUnit 2 using the exec task/console runner workaround.

Ready.
Steady.
Shoot your comments,

Bernard

I fully agree with all of this.

Note, however, that NUnit2 support in NAnt is already there, unfortunately,
as I see it, it's pretty much useless except for testing nant itself...
heck, can't even build the nantcontrib tests as is. I've been looking at
this from all possible angles, and at least to make it work as *I* think it
should, I see no other option short of modifying part of NUnit2 itself
(yuck) or rewriting a large part of what it already does inside nant to
support it (double yuck). This, at least, makes building nantcontrib in full
impossible at the moment unless we eliminate one of the task tests in it :(

If anyone has any better options, I'm all ears :)

2002-11-20 Thread Kevin Miller
Everytime this thread is brought up I always have to chime in and say here
here.

So as expected I totally agree. I have 0.7.9.0+ version of NAnt + misc
NAntContrib tasks that I support so that we can actually use NAnt in some
stable fashion. I would rather base my support on a more current version.

Now I get to sit back relax and wait another month before replying to the
same thread again.

While everyone's awake in here - can I ask which branch tag the next
version of NAnt is coming from? I'm sitting on the resx and license

I recently found tortoisecvs to be the most painless way to work with
sourceforge from nt/xp. It comes with a customised version of plink to
handle the ssl stuff and is fairly painless to setup.

You should at least be able to get it working by typing a password for
every commit. Plink is the better solution but it is a PITA to get working.

OK valid point. And as one of the project admins I take my share of the
blame for this. Gerry Scott and I discussed a release last time and it
just didn't get done. So if we can get together and get this done now it
would be great. I'm going back to Australia for xmas so I have 3 week
window in which I can contribute. I think thats more than enough time -
well depending on the nunit2 issues that is. Whats your feeling on
getting some sort of workaround for this Tomas ?

Hi, first-time user - just figured out that 0.7.9 is badly out of date, now
using daily snapshot.

I need to set up an NUnit2 task for my project - can someone explain the
workaround for me?
All my tests are written with NUnit2, so I can't backport (easily) to NUnit
1.

RE: Re: [nant-dev] FAQ: The next NAnt version

2002-11-20 Thread Shaw, Gerry
Placing the responsibility of getting a release out on the project
admins isn't going to work if the past is any indication of the future
:)

The best way to get a release done is for a number of people to take a
nant-snapshot and QA it to the level that they would feel comfortable to
say that this is a stable release that will add value to users.
Needlesss to say you should agree on the date of the snapshot.

Once that is done I'm sure one of us can go through the painful process
of trying to convince SourceForge to post a release.
