[neonixie-l] Re: Nixie Tester & Healer for IN18 Nixie Tubes

2017-08-20 Thread Robert L

OK... I'll play...
First, I'm also a fan of Marcin's testers and have been very appreciative
of his excellent customer support!

The design below came about following a conversation with Jeff W... My
thanks to him for the impetus to do (overdo?) the project! I also find
built-in meters to be very handy.

Current meter below is a 0-999 mA ebay part with the stock 0.050 ohm
current shunt replaced by a 0.50 ohm part. Scale is now 0-99.9 mA. Decimal
point is left to the user's imagination.

Volt meter is downstream of the re-purposed current test toggle switch.
Meter now reads the HV supply output voltage or the tube anode voltage
depending on the position of the switch.

Current control is by an active current limiter... Current will stay
constant (or be limited) if a tube heals while running. First image below
shows the meters reading 2.8 mA tube current with the HV supply at 170 VDC.
The tube below sustains glow at 139 VDC downstream of the limiter circuit
as shown on the second photo... button caps were put back on switches after
these photos were taken. Meter holes cut with the vertical mill at work,
squared off with a small file. PCB SMD reflow was lead free with a Whizoo
reflow toaster oven. Power supply needs addressed with a +12 VDC to +/- 5
VDC floating output switching supply module at the lower right of the pcb.

It’s really unbelievable. And I have three more items on GSP – two have already
came through, have arrived in Switzerland, should be delivered tomorrow. A new
set of tubes is still on its way to GSP and I hope they don’t get disposed of.
I’ll stop making orders with GSP sales.

The sadest thing about this is that they just dump it... they should return

I know a friend that ordered a transmitting tube for nearly 1k$, a very old
and rare one, like a museum piece... GSP disposed it.

[neonixie-l] Re: PV Electronics R568 Clock Project With Black R|Z568M Nixie Tubes

2017-08-20 Thread Roddy Scott
Edward,

one method of retaining the brass as it is and to stop it shorting out is
to coat it with a lacquer. You can either use a spray lacquer or paint on a
clear gel coat nail varnish such as Sally Hansen's Double Duty. If you use
the DD, give it a couple of days to get to a rock hard finish.
I have used this in various aspects for clocks, it makes great crystal
clear lenses for LEDs embedded in brass mounts if you build it up slowly
over a couple of days, to make diffuser lenses just agitate two part clear
epoxy to include micro air bubbles in it and this gives great dispersion of
the LED light.

I get some weird looks from the staff at my local pharmacy when I am asking
them for clear nail varnish but they are getting used to me asking for
strange stuff. It is a good place to get small amounts of chemicals for
other applications too.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: tubes/valves and Global Shipping

2017-08-20 Thread Manuel Azevedo
I got a refund, initially not complete, but after complaining about the whole
situation, Pitney Bowes, the GSP partner responsible for the destruction, did
refund me the total, together with an email saying why they destroyed it
("mercury levels") and that there was no way to open exceptions. My initial
email from ebay said only: "congratulations, you got a refund because the item
cannot be delivered".
After searching around, I got the impression, from several post of others that
got tubes destroyed by GSP, that Pitney Bowes sees the shinny getter surfaces
as an indication of mercury. The Apollo and RCA numitrons are known for their
beautiful shinny silver coating.
I'm not expecting an apology besides the standard text I got so far. I did
vigorously complain, but it got the strength of another "anonymous" email that
ebay/gsp get every other day: which is close to nothing, as they shield
themselves in airline safety.
I wish that magazines like Wired would pickup on these stories and would expose
how GSP is destroying these vintage pieces. I shudder to think that every time
someone orders some IN-18 out of the US (might happen!) they can be destroyed
this easily. And all could be easily done with some arbitration before
destroying the pieces.
