On November 17, 2020, the first event of the 2020/2021 season will take place
at the Media Art Center for Research and Methodology in Moscow. The center was
opened in September 2020 with the participation of the Directorate of
educational programs in the field of art and culture of the Department of
Culture of the city of Moscow at the space of the Lyadov Music School. The
director of the Media Art Center for Research and Methodology is Natalia Fuchs,
art critic and curator, researcher in the field of new media.
The first event of the Media Art Center for Research and Methodology is
dedicated to such a topic as understanding media and digital culture. And it is
impossible to reveal it without studying the foundations of the formation of
the theory of media culture. One of its founders was the Canadian theorist
Marshall McLuhan. His cult work "Understanding Media" is the foundation for
anyone interested in media art.
In the “Understanding Media” program on November 17, 2020:
17:00 — 18:00 Lecture by Natalia Fuchs "McLuhan’s Insights"
The moment of meeting of various media Marshall McLuhan considered the "moment
of truth", liberation, during which a new form is born. How this moment is
experienced in the art of new media, as well as the significance of the legacy
of the famous Canadian theorist and researcher for modern culture, will be told
by curator and art critic Natalia Fuchs.
The lecture will be held in Russian.
18:00 — 19:00 Lecture by Andrew McLuhan "Our Cause is Effect: Practical McLuhan"
In his lecture, Andrew McLuhan will discuss McLuhan’s practical side, the
method behind the message, investigation practice, the reasons for the McLuhan
Institute in 2017, and why McLuhan is important today.
Andrew McLuhan is the grandson of Marshall McLuhan, a renowned Canadian
professor at the University of Toronto and a pioneer in media research. Andrew
documented and described Marshall McLuhan’s Annotated Library (now in the
Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto and listed as a World
Significant Cultural Artifact by UNESCO). He is now the director of the McLuhan
Institute, created in 2017 to continue the work begun by Marshall McLuhan and
his son, Eric McLuhan. He currently teaches a 12-week intensive course on 1964
Marshall McLuhan’s Understanding Media: Human Expansion in the Gray Area, San
Francisco.
The lecture will be held in English with translation into Russian.
19:30 — 21:00 Andrew McLuhan’s Workshop "Figure and Ground: A technique for
seeing the whole situation"
This interactive workshop is based on the work of Marshall McLuhan using
techniques developed from Gestalt psychology to identify the “mental and
social” effects of technology. Participants will contribute to learning the
"basics" of the chosen technology and acquire skills that they can apply to
learn any other human-related technology.
The workshop will be held in English, without translation.
