Re: [NetBehaviour] Departure day, Tahrir 1-8 (after Don Delillo)
Hi David, Between working on the factory floor and computer programming as a hobby I've had little time to take much notice of the news and events. So I scrolled down past the images you post about here. to the line drawings. Then I come back to the post and read what you've said and then go back and look at the images from Al Jazeera and see your lines again. Thanks for posting. James. On 4 February 2011 22:55, David Papapostolou dpapaposto...@gmail.com wrote: Dear list, for my first ever post, here is an attempt to convey/portray/assess something of: - the making of the collective perception of what may be referred to, a posteriori, as a major event; - how this is mediated through our engagement with some sort of mass media; - in turn how the experience becomes the event itself; - how the medium and its limits (technical or otherwise), inherent artefacts, may play the lead part in framing our experience of the event; - and more on aesthetics, abstraction, technology, the representation of politics in art, painting... Departure day, Tahrir 1-8 (after Don Delillo) http://dpppstl.tumblr.com/ The starting point is, of course, the events in Egypt, today's gathering, the expectation that it may have significant political impact, or not; then Don Delillo's work, Underworld in particular: this where were you when IT happened? question and the related how did you hear about it?, the radio, the cathode tube, the photograph clipped from a newspaper; and of course my own experience following these events through online media, in this case live TV broadcast by Al Jazeera. Departure day, Tahrir 1-8 (after Don Delillo) is a collection of screenshots of Al Jazeera's live coverage, taken during and shortly after today's prayer on Tahrir Square, Cairo. While some of the pictures clearly refer to the event and are open to interpretation, emphasising the complexity of engaging with the events remotely as we are still assessing contradicting analysis witnessed through mass media coverage; others are more strikingly abstracted to the point of bringing the medium to the foreground, and may be assessed aesthetically rather than for their informative coverage of the events. [NetBehaviour] Arctic Conquistadors: Olga Kisseleva is mapping the Arctic.
Arctic Conquistadors: Olga Kisseleva is mapping the Arctic. The digital animation ARCTIC CONQUISTADORS examines the tensions and conflicts characterizing the Arctic today. The Arctic space is being re-mapped / re-drawn / re-appropriated by the traditional stakeholders and newcomers, be it private or state-owned corporations, governmental or non-governmental bodies. The artist reflects on how the current situation is effected by the overlapping interests of geopolitical and corporate powers, referring to the 'global conquests'. http://2011.barentsspektakel.no/ Kisseleva's work answers the question who is the Arctic today? First, logos of the companies appear where they are now located. Then the logos start invading the whole map following the rhythm that echoes rapidly growing activities in the Arctic. To build 'Arctic Conquistadors' she is working with the Departments of Economics and Political Sciences of Sorbonne. They cooperate with the Business and Industry Advisory Committee of the OECD, the Norwegian Barents Secretariat, the International Barents Secretariat and Platform (London). Other artists invited to produce the works for the exhibition MIND THE MAP! within the festival Barents Spektakel 2011 in Kirkenes are Morten Traavik (Norway) and Stefano Cagol (Italy). Olga Kisseleva's approach to her work is much the same as a scientist's. She questions an issue, formulates a hypothesis, and proposes a solution to the problem. Besides being an artist, Kisseleva has always studied mathematics, physics and political studies. Thus, her artistic career is a constant search between art and science, art and sociology, art and psychology. Now Olga Kisseleva is Director of the ArtScience Program at the Faculty of Arts, Pantheon-Sorbonne University, Paris. www.kisseleva.org ___ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@netbehaviour.org http://www.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour

Re: [NetBehaviour] Ronald Topor?!
I know he did the drawings for many of Rene Laloux's early animations. Laloux said that after he had done the designs for their first feature film he dropped out of the production because his mother had told him that no good would come of it. The film was Le Planete Sauvage and became a huge international success. Laloux referred to her as his castrating mother. Wondering if anyone else has read the bizarre and funny stories of him (Topor) Apart from being his novel 'La Locataire' on which Polanski's movie is based, I remember him from being one of the French connected to Boris Vian and sideways to Serge Gainsbourg In a long forgotten time of liberation of the arts, in the seventies that was. Helas nowadays the guys who were young then grew, old and blocked the entrance to freedom for the new generation, so they are having bad luck now. [NetBehaviour] Current: An Experiment in collecting Digital Art
The Harris Museum has announced their shortlist - the exhibition is from 26th March to 4th June 2011 Some wonderful work- should be good'n : ) Ruth Press Release The Harris Museum Art Gallery in partnership with folly have today announced five shortlisted artists for Current: An Experiment in Collecting Digital Art. New and recent work by boredomresearch, Michael Szpakowski, James Coupe, Thomson Craighead and Harwood, Wright, Yokokoji will go on display at the Harris Museum Art Gallery from 26th March to 4th June 2011. The artists were shortlisted by an expert panel (including Kathryn Lambert, Creative Director of folly, Mike Stubbs CEO of FACT, Ruth Catlow, Co-founder and co-director of Furtherfield.org and HTTP Gallery London, and Beryl Graham, Professor of New Media Art at the University of Sunderland and co-editor of CRUMB). One artwork will be chosen by a secondary panel for acquisition into the Harris' permanent collection. This will be announced at the exhibition launch on Friday 25th March. UK-based artists working in digital media were invited to submit work which celebrates innovative and creative use of new media technology. Each of the artists embraces technology in very different ways, from live networked installations through to moving image and sound. They have all exhibited internationally and are well respected within this field of work. This project is the first of its kind - a pioneering practical case study in the collection of digital art which will encourage debate from visitors, artists and sector professionals about the process of integrating digital artworks into existing permanent collections. Kathryn Lambert, Creative Director of folly said; We were delighted with the overwhelming response from artists for Current, and are thrilled with the shortlist. The chosen art works will create an outstanding exhibition that represents the breadth of artistic practice, enquiry and best work being created with art and technology in the UK today. All of the chosen art works will contribute to the debate into the challenges of collecting digital art and we can't wait to find out which piece is finally chosen for acquisition in late March by the secondary expert panel. Really beautiful - so nice to go into a painting and move around inside it, especially such a familiar painting. But imagine if there were things normally out of view that you only discover when exploring this way, maybe hiding behind other things? Guernica [cover up] by Neil Jenkins... Created after hearing the news that a tapestry reproduction of Guernica, Pablo Picasso's powerful anti-war painting, was concealed behind a blue cloth and a row of flags at the U.N. Security Council offices as White House envoy Colin Powell was making the United States case for war (05/02/03). A UN spokesperson claimed that this was not censorship, and had been done to provide a suitable backdrop for TV cameras, that would say 'UN'.
