[NetBehaviour] Ordure finds its rightful place | Museum of Ordure

2011-10-11 Thread Guy McMusker
Given the daily overproduction of user generated content and the continuous
political solicitation to which we are subjected, it’s ever more difficult
to make sense of the sheer number of objects circulating on the internet.
Finally some order is restored.
Les Liens Invisibles is very proud to announce its contribution to the
Museum of Ordure with a new website that invites contributions in all
aspects of ordure.
Ordure is defined as “dirt: dung: excrement: anything unclean (fig).– adj.
ordurous. (Fr.,–O. ord, foul–L. horridus, rough.)” There are categories of
ordure which are common, shit for example.
The subject proliferates: What are the parameters of ordure? And what is
virtual ordure?

BACKGROUND TO THE MUSEUM
The Museum of Ordure explores the cultural value of ordure through its
projects and ongoing public collections. It takes inspiration from Dominique
Laporte’s “History of Shit” (first published in French in 1978), to verify
that modern power is founded on conditions for the management of human
waste. Laporte insists that in parallel to the cleansing of the streets of
Paris from shit, the French language was similarly cleansed of Latin words
to establish official French without “foreign leanings” (according to an
edict of 1539). Thus language was purged of its “lingering stink” to become
purer and invested with authority. Can the same can be said of the
technologies that are now found on the streets (installed in mobile devices
and such-like), that they are purged of their stink too? This is the Apple
paradigm of software development with specially conceived proprietary “apps”
(for iPhones and iPads) that close off users from the underlying stink of
code. If the health of the (social) body can be detected in the examination
of its shit, then current mismanagement is clear for all to see in the vile
products that proliferate.

THE ONGOING ORDURE COLLECTION
See the growing collection of ordure at http://www.ordure.org/collection/ and
share with us #ordure content on Twitter.
Actually at the moment Twitter has suspended the @museumofordure account,
confirming the status of its tweets as ordure; despite this, ordure
continues to circulate and results for #ordure can be found at
http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23ordurehttp://twitter.com/#%21/search/%23ordure
.

The Museum is also currently showing some objects from its collection as
part of the Museum Show at Arnolfini, Bristol, UK (Sept-Nov 2011). See

Please forgive me, it seems I can't even get my own history right. Your

[NetBehaviour] N.K. workshops: Field Effect with Martin Howse // Noise As Input, Noise As Filter/ A Compositional Approach by Kasper Toeplitz

2011-10-11 Thread Manuela Benetton
Oct 21, 22, 23 2011/ 12:00-19:00 daily

 *Field Effect with Martin Howse*

A three day workshop actively exploring the effects of electromagnetic
fields on living systems; on the human body and the human psyche. The
effects of complex field interactions with such systems, particularly with
the psyche, are largely unknown and open to debate. Field Effect proposes to
obtain first-hand,experimental knowledge of these relations, using DIY
technologies. Experiments already suggest links between low frequency
electromagnetic emissions and experiences of hauntings and UFO sightings.
The first two days will be devoted to the construction of devices to both
generate and measure magnetic fields and to examine the effects of these
fields on living systems (such as plants or moulds), and on the body and
psyche (measuring skin temperature, skin resistance, heartrate). In
parallel, a series of experimental situations will be constructed to provide
insights into the interactions between complex spectral ecologies
(communication technologies such as wireless networks, mobile phone bases,
TV, radio, power lines, motors, all electronic devices) and life.

Participants will learn how to construct simple devices to measure heart
rate and skin resistance, how to interface these to software and
log/interpret results and how to intervene within electromagnetic space. No
previous knowledge of fields required.

*Noise As Input, Noise As Filter/ A Compositional Approach by Kasper
Toeplitz*

Not so much, or not only, a software workshop, but rather a composition
course in electronic music which takes as its starting point the use of
noise, similar to the (white) canvas of a painter or rather to the block of
stone of a sculptor. Considering the noise as the sole input, more attention
will be paid to its internal structure as well to its different shapes and
colors, including way to manipulate it from the inside, starting the
composition on the input material itself rather that only on its
transformations. The noise can of course be created by strictly digital
means but can also be “extracted” from the “real world” – and one way to do
so without simply recording what’s “outside”, is to use webcams to bring a
digital version of the world – vision being transformed into (noisy) sounds.
Noise, as in white noise, pink noise, black, fractal, etc, as the prime, or
even only source for real-time composition/synthesis; then we work on blocks
of sound and not on pitches, have “clouds” of sound with more or less
precise limits – “uncertain limits” -, different textures of different
densities. Close to the orchestral ideas of people such as Ligeti,
Penderecki, Xenakis or Scelsi. The examples will be given in Max/MSP and
Jitter, but other softwares are welcome, as the workshop is much more about
the “why” than the “how”, and the goal is to create a composition based on
the ideas explored there. Kasper Toeplitz
